Dennis Morgan Crist
Dennis Morgan Crist, 59, of Canal Winchester, Ohio, formerly of Hico, died Sept. 7, 2008, at Ohio State University East Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
Born Dec. 12, 1948, in Charleston, he was a son of the late Marion Ivan and Hilda Myrtle Carte Crist. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Dale Crist, on Dec. 28, 2007.
Mr. Crist was a heavy equipment operator for a coal strip mine.
Surviving: his wife, Donna Crist of Canal Winchester, Ohio; sons, Jeff Crist of Charleston and Greg Crist, both of Columbus, Ohio; a step-daughter, Ashley McLaughlin of Columbus; step-son, Matthew McLaughlin of Columbus; brothers, Donald Crist of Odenton, Md., and Daniel Crist of New Richmond, Ohio; and a grandchild, Alex Crist.
Graveside service was Sept. 10 with Pastor Eric Kitchen officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens at Victor.

Janet ‘Ginger’ Anita Elmore Markivich Estep
Janet “Ginger” Anita Elmore Markivich Estep, 71, of Oak Hill, died Sept. 19, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center, after a long illness.
Born July 31, 1937, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Harold Waddell Elmore and Goldie Elmore Humphrey. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Edward Humphrey of Chicago; and by a stepson, Robert Paul Estep of Virginia.
Mrs. Estep was a member of the Smyrna Baptist Church, Smyrna, S.C.
Surviving: her husband, Paul Estep of Oak Hill; a son, Mark Andrew Markivich and wife Renee of Franklin, Va.; daughters, Michelle Diane Willis and husband Scott of Tallahassee, Fla., and Kathryn Lynn Ellison and husband Kent of Oak Hill; stepsons, Kenneth O’Brien Estep and his wife Michelle of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Joseph Edward Estep of Murelles Inlet, S.C.; grandchildren, Jennifer, Raven, Jeremy, Willis, Schale, Ty, and Kirby Markivich, and Joshua, Marcus, and Jenna Ellison; a stepgrandchild, Robert Daniel Estep; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Tommy Elmore of Florida, Raymond Elmore and wife Sarah of Princeton, Charles Elmore, and William Elmore and wife Janie, all of Kentucky, Kenneth Humphrey and wife Alice of Scarbro, Robert Humphrey of Chicago, Ill., Larry Humphrey of Scarbro, and Harold Humphrey and wife Barbara of Tennessee; sisters, Mary Alice Cote’, Cindy Whitlow and husband Jimmy, and Brenda Humphrey, all of Oak Hill; a very special relative, Jeanette Drennen of Oak Hill; and her caregiver, Norsenia Damron of Oak Hill.
Funeral services were Sept. 22 at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial was in the Butcher-Estep Cemetery at Maysel.

William Ray Gardner
William Ray Gardner, 66, of Terry, died Sept. 20, 2008, at the home of his son, William.
Born Jan. 5, 1942, at Norville, he was the son of the late Ellis and Marie Plumley Gardner.
He was a United States Army veteran.
Surviving: sons, William Ray Gardner II of Terry and Sean Gardner of Clifton Heights, Pa.; daughter, Melinda Gardner of Clifton Heights, Pa.; brother, Harley Gardner of Beckley; sister, Bonnie Gardner of Arizona; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Graveside rites and committal services were Sept. 24 at Terry Cemetery in Terry, with Rev. Gene Hall officiating. Burial followed.

Clyde O. Harler Jr.
Clyde O. Harler Jr., 85, of Kingsport, Tenn., died at his home of natural causes on Sept. 22, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Clyde and Ruby Harler; a brother, James Clinton Harler; and a sister, Betty Mae Prater.
He was a longtime employee of the U.S. Postal Service, having held numerous positions. After retirement, he was an avid golfer.
Mr. Harler was a former choir director at St. Luke United Methodist Church. At the time of his death, he was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving: his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Dukes Harler; a son, Clyde O. Harler III of Danville, Va.; a brother, John A. Harler and wife Shelby Jean of Winchester, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. There will be no formal services.

Sally Jean Leslie Baggs Janney
Sally Jean Leslie Baggs Janney, 72, of Oak Hill, died at her home on Sept. 20, 2008.
Born Aug. 27, 1936, at Ludowici, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Albert Hall and Thelma Christine Swindell Baggs. A sister, Shelby Baggs Hallman of Lakeland, Fla., also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Janney was a graduate of Ludowici High School, Draughons College, and attended the University of Georgia, Hinesville extension. She has been a homemaker for 40 years.
She was a member and past president of the Woodland Oaks Garden Club and the Fayette Study Club. Sally was a life member of the West Virginia Garden Club, Inc. (WVGC), a member and past president of the Oak Hill Grade School PTA and member and past president of the Oak Hill Junior Women’s Club.
She served the West Virginia Federation as State International Affairs Chairman, State Project Concern-Hope Chairman and editor of the West Virginia Clubwoman, was a member of the former Oak Hill Civic League, a member and past president of the auxiliary to the West Virginia Optometric Association, life member and past president of the Auxiliary to the American Optometric Association, a life member of AOA PAC and a member and past chairman of the Ladies Golf Association of White Oak Country Club. She belonged to three bridge clubs.
Sally was a life-long Methodist. She was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church (OHUMC) where she was a member of the Worship Committee, a former member and past chairman of the Susanna Wesley Morning Circle, and a member of the New Beginning Circle.
Surviving: her husband, Dr. John D. Janney; a son, John David Janney II and his wife, Wendy, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a daughter, Karen Janney Rhodes and her husband, Michael, of Sanford, N.C.; two grandchildren, whom she adored, Lauren Elizabeth Rhodes and William David Rhodes, both at home in Sanford; and by a sister, Shirley Bullard of Cottonwood, Ala.
Funeral services were Sept. 23 at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. William Kniceley and Rev. Dr. Charles Miller. Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
Active pallbearers were nephews Dr. Jim Vargo, Dr. John Vargo, Chris Vargo and Dr. Tony Sciara, great-nephew Paul Martin, and friends Jim Myal and Ed Kiliany.
Honorary pallbearers were John “Pro” Mackey, Tom James, Al Gannon, Vince Sundstrom, Gary and Wanda Perry, Bill Preston, J. Patrick S. Lockard
Patrick S. Lockard, 44, of Lansing, died Sept. 19, 2008, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington.
Born at Charlton Heights, he was the son of the late Bradley M. and Dorothy F. Lockard.
Mr. Lockard was a retired timberman and a farmer.
Surviving: Tammy, his loving wife of 19 years; his darling daughter, Carole J. Palazzo; two much adored grandchildren, Corey and Rosa Palazzo; and his ever faithful companion, his dog, Kelsey, all of Lansing.
Services were Sept. 23 at Restlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Victor, with Rev. Roy Crist officiating.

Penny Sue Bolyard Nestor
Penny Sue Bolyard Nestor, 47, of Ansted, formerly of Grafton, died at her home, surrounded by family and friends, on Sept. 21, 2008, following a long battle with cancer.
Born Aug. 16, 1961, in Clarksburg, she was the daughter of the late Garrett and Dorothy McCauley Bolyard. Penny also was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll (Mac) McCauley.
Penny was a 1979 graduate of Grafton High School. She was a homemaker and loved taking care of her family, including “Jake,” her beloved black lab.
She was formerly employed at Thorofare Groceries and Hecks Department Stores.
Surviving: her companion of 17 years, Joe Critchfield, and her two daughters, Lacee Brooke Nestor and her fiancé, Benny “Byrd” Pierson, and Ashley Renae Nestor and her fiancé, Kevin “Kak” Knight; granddaughter, Bailey Jo Nicole Pierson; sisters, Sandra Fleming and husband Sonny of Bridgeport, Kay McKinney and husband Paul of Grafton, and Sherri Fleming and husband Roger of Grafton; brother, Carl Bolyard and wife Sandy of Grafton; and her best friend, Sandy Sheme of Grafton.
Funeral services were Sept. 24 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted, with Pastor Jeff Floyd officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor.

Gladys Irene Kees Nichols
Gladys Irene Kees Nichols, 75, of Oak Hill, died Sept. 20, 2008, at her home.
Born Dec. 15, 1932, at Collinsdale, she was the daughter of the late Homer Douglas and Leva Mae Marcum Kees. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Lee Nichols; and a great-grandson, Garrett Andrew Treadway.
Mrs. Nichols attended the Oak Hill Christian Church at Summerlee and was a homemaker.
Surviving: daughter, Tammie Lynn Treadway and husband, Larry Sr., of Oak Hill; brothers, Bannan Kees of Collinsdale, Robert Kees of Columbus, Ohio, John Kees of Winchester, Va., and William Kees of Fayetteville; sisters, Vada Craig of Smithers, Ethel Lucas and Nola Clements, both of Collinsdale, and Kathleen Lively of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Joseph Lee Treadway and wife, Andrea, of Oak Hill and Larry Wayne Treadway Jr. and wife, Stephanie, of Fayetteville; great-grandchildren, Maddison Renee Treadway, Trevor Lee Treadway, Hallie Lynn Treadway, Isaiah James Treadway and Grace Lyn Kay Treadway; and special grandson, Joel Fernett.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Scott Hamilton officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Lawrence ‘Sonny’ O’Neal
Lawrence “Sonny” O’Neal, 74, of Mt. Lookout, Nicholas County, died Sept. 18, 2008, at the Ansted Center.
Born Feb. 15, 1934, at Crown Hill, Kanawha County, he was a son of the late James Curtis and Isabelle Bass O’Neal. He also was preceded in death by five sisters.
Mr. O’Neal was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church at Mt. Lookout where he served as a deacon for over 40 years and was a retired coal miner.
Surviving: his wife of 38 years, Rose Mary Underwood O’Neal; sons, James Curtis and Elmer Walter O’Neal, both of Mt. Lookout; brother, George “Buss” O’Neal of Crown Hill; sisters, Sylvia Kelly of Crown Hill, Janet (Jim) Miller of Sunday Road, and Beatrice Beam of Mt. Lookout; an aunt, Mary Corbin of Dry Branch; and several nieces and nephews, and friends.
Funeral services were Sept. 21 in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at Mt. Lookout with Rev. Phillip Lilly and Rev. Mark Secrist officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Virgil Roscoe Persinger
Virgil Roscoe Persinger, 75, of Oak Hill, died Sept. 23, 2008, at home following an extended illness.
Born June 30, 1933, at Sinks Grove, he was the son of the late Opie and Blanche Persinger. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Persinger; two sisters; and one grandson.
Mr. Persinger was a retired coal miner and a member of Moose Lodge #1664. He was an avid woodworker.
Surviving: son, Alfred W. “Rick” Nugen and wife Betty of Minden; sisters, Jean Shockey of Shinnston, Linda Lee of Weston, Brenda Nugen of Merritt Island, Fla., and Willa Stewart and husband Wayne of Shinnston; brother, Bobby Persinger and wife Crystal of Alderson; close friends, Brenda and Joe Roles of Oak Hill; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at the funeral home.

Vivian Alvena Sims
Vivian Alvena Sims, 72, of Rainelle, died Sept. 18, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, following a short illness.
Born June 7, 1936, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Burton and Maggie Sevy. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Troy Lee Sims, on Oct. 7, 2005.
Mrs. Sims was a homemaker and a member of Big Sewell Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be truly missed by many.
Surviving: her son, Burton Sims and wife, Debora, of Loops Road; grandchildren, Matthew Sims and wife, Janet, of Maplewood, Susan Sims of Loops Road, and Samantha Williams and husband, Matt, of Loops Road; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Kaiden Sims and Kayleigh Williams; brothers, Kellum Sevy and wife, Geneva, of Goshen, Ind., Owen Sevy and wife, Linda, of North Carolina, and Estal Sevy and wife, Gaile, of Belpre, Ohio; along with many nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.
Services were Sept. 21 at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Rev. Mike Tincher officiating. Burial followed in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.

Sammy Dennis Sparacino
Sammy Dennis Sparacino, 71, of Beckley, died Sept. 22, 2008, after a long battle with colon cancer.
Born May 20, 1937, and raised in Mabscott, he was the son of the late Santo and Chiara (Mary) Ciatto Sparacino. He was the youngest of 12 children and known only as “Bobby” to his family.
In addition to his parents, five brothers, Andrew, Joe, Tony, Jim and Eugene; and a sister, Grace Lico, all of San Jose, Calif., formerly of Mabscott; and a niece, Rosemary Sparacino, preceded him in death.
He was a United States Marine Corps veteran.
Sammy lived all his life in Beckley. He was known by all for his great talent of playing pool.
Surviving: a son, Michael Sparacino and companion Tabatha of Beaver; a daughter, Jennifer and husband Ron Ellison of Winder, Ga.; a daughter, Rachel and her sister, Leah, of Beckley; and ex-wife, Peggy Sparacino of Cool Ridge, mother of Michael and Jennifer; sisters, Santina Turco, Nancy Rogusky and husband Elmer, and Josephine Sparacino, all of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Charlie of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Pete of Oregon; grandchildren, Nikki, Katelyn and Joseph Sparacino and Isaac, Nicholas and Emaleigh Ellison; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins in Beckley.

Elsie Pearl DeBoard Williams
Elsie Pearl DeBoard Williams, 87, of Pax, died Sept. 18, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.
Born Aug. 18, 1921, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Emma Smith DeBoard. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Walter James Williams; an infant daughter, Sandra Renee; six brothers and four sisters.
Elsie was a member of the Beckley Seventh Adventist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving: son, Terry Williams and wife, Tammy, of Cool Ridge; daughters, Robin Mullins and husband, Everette, of Pax, and Karen Basham and husband, Tony, of Beckley; a sister, Donna Young of Oak Hill; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other loving friends and family members.
Services were Sept. 21 at the Pax Advent Church with Pastor Samuel Simuzoshya officiating. Burial was at Pax Community Cemetery, Pax.
