Carolyn J. Wade Comer DeFoe
Carolyn J. Wade Comer DeFoe, 63, of Oak Hill, died Sept. 27, 2008, at home surrounded by her loving family, following a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Born at Carbondale on April 20, 1945, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Lewis and Louise Huddleston Wade. She also was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Paul F. Comer, and by her second husband, Lt. Col. Donald R. DeFoe.
She was a member of the National Humane Society and loved to cook.
Surviving: her son, Rick Comer and wife Teresa of Hico; her daughters, Pamela Blake of Cannelton and Angela Pyatt and husband Rick of Oak Hill; 10 grandchildren, James Shell, Jackie Shell, Jennifer Comer, Amy Comer, Amanda Comer, Joshua Comer, Brittany Comer, Elijah Pyatt, Mariah Pyatt, and Noah Pyatt; sisters, Sue Saylor of Hamilton, Ohio, Wanda Sparkes and husband Richard of Bradley, Kay Jones and husband Bob, and Sharon Lowery and companion Scott Messmore, all of Beards Fork; and her special companion of seven years, her dog, Pepe’.
Funeral services were Sept. 30 at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Phyllis Bowling assisted by Linda Nibert officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Ruth Richmond Edwards
Ruth Richmond Edwards, 80, of Kingston, Ohio, formerly of Dothan, died Sept. 23, 2008, surrounded by her family, following an extended illness.
Born Dec. 23, 1927, in Dothan, she was the daughter of the late Herman C. and Ethel (Bragg) Richmond. Ruth also was preceded in death by her sisters, Lily Richmond, Beatrice Evelyn Richmond, Glenna Pearce, Dessie Franklin, and Flo Carroll; her brothers, Carl Richmond, Bernard Richmond, Dick Richmond, and Archie Richmond; her husband, Herbert W. Edwards; her daughters, Linda Young and Diana Rozell; her grandson, Jerry Young; and her sons-in-law, Jerry Young, Steve Farabee and Jeff Castle.
On July 24, 1948, she married the love of her life, Herbert W. Edwards. The 50 years that they spent together were a shining example to their children of unfailing love and selfless devotion. When Herb passed away on Nov. 17, 1998, Ruth’s love for him carried on and carried her through the rest of her life.
Ruth’s legacy will forever be the large family that she lovingly and faithfully served.
Surviving: her sister, Janet Sutphin of Scarbro; her brother, Tally Richmond of Oak Hill; her children, Mary Farabee of Chillicothe, Ohio, Karen Castle of Kingston, Ohio, Kathy (Don) Newsome of Kingston, Ohio, Sara (Keith) Woods of Chillicothe, Patty (Jeff) Allen of Circleville, and Herb (Kim) Edwards of Kingston, Ohio; grandchildren, Shane (Angie)Young, Nate (Brandi) Smith, Kristen (Josh) McQuiniff, Lindsay Farabee and her fiancé, Scott Grubb, Missy Farabee, Paige Castle, Ben (Grace) Newsome, Brad Newsome, Josh (Masha)Woods, Matt Woods, Jessie (Drew) Zickafoose, Megan Edwards, Adam Edwards, Aaron Edwards, Abbie Edwards, Grace Edwards, and Katie Edwards; great-grandchildren, Courtney and Haley Young; Ethan, Max and Nick Young; Logan Smith; Brenna McQuiniff; Hope and Holly Farabee; and Jade, Jozie, Jace, Jaxon, and Judah Zickafoose.
Funeral services were Sept. 26 at the Hill Funeral Home, 24 West Ing Street, Kingston, Ohio. Burial followed in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Ra’Sean L. Gray
Ra’Sean L. Gray, 19, of Mount Hope, died Sept. 18, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.
Born Nov. 14, 1988, in Beckley, he was the son of Portia Gray.
He was a 2007 graduate of Mount Hope High School and was attending West Virginia State University.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lee Phillip and Carolyn A. Brown Gray; maternal great-grandmother, Martha Alexander; maternal great-grandparents, William H. and Louise Gray; maternal great-great-grandmother, Irene Fore; uncle, Kereen A. Gray; cousin, Tamiyah A. Eloy; great-aunts, Linda Merritt and Dorothy Allen; and great-uncles, Eugene and John Howard and William “Chief” Gray.
Surviving: his mother, Portia Gray; godfather, Charles Ross; brothers, CJ and Shemar of Mount Hope; sister, Precious of Mount Hope; uncles, Lamont (Fannie) of Oak Hill, Greg and Robert, both of Mount Hope; aunts, Sheila (Will) of Fort Hood, Texas, and Sabrina (Brad) of Atlanta, Ga.; great-grandfather, James A. Brown of Washington, D.C.; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Sept. 28 at the Mount Hope Methodist Church, Mount Hope, with Rev. Michael Kessinger officiating.

Clyde O. Harler Jr.
Clyde O. Harler Jr., 85, of Kingsport, Tenn., died at his home of natural causes on Sept. 22, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Clyde and Ruby Harler; a brother, James Clinton Harler; and a sister, Betty Mae Prater.
He was a longtime employee of the U.S. Postal Service, having held numerous positions. After retirement, he was an avid golfer.
Mr. Harler was a former choir director at St. Luke United Methodist Church. At the time of his death, he was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving: his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Dukes Harler; a son, Clyde O. Harler III of Danville, Va.; a brother, John A. Harler and wife Shelby Jean of Winchester, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
There were no formal services.

James Elden Lively
James Elden Lively passed away Sept. 8, 2008.
Born Sept. 26, 1937, he was the son of Letha Lively and the late James Willis Lively. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, J.D. Lively; and his first wife and mother of his four sons, Faye Lively.
Surviving, in addition to his mother: his wife, Reva Macil Lively; brother, Charles and wife Ernestine; sister, June and husband Karl; children, Barry and fiancee Connie, Brian and wife Jennifer, Jamie and fiancee Bobbi, Wayland and wife Janice, Lane Hanshew and wife Deborah, Wanda Taber and Robbie Hanshew; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; devoted brother-in-law, Raye True; sisters and brother-in-law of wife Reva, Ethel and Tommy, Ruth and Butch, Pam and Randy; and many loving nephews, nieces and friends.
Memorial services were held at Buford Road Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., on Sept. 12, with Dr. Tony Kohout, pastor, officiating.

Charles Francis Mahood
Charles Francis Mahood, 83, of Oak Hill, died Sept. 23, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born Aug. 22, 1925, at Sun, he was the son of the late Frederick R. and Oma G. Vandall Mahood. Four brothers, Chester, Bob, Fred and David, and a sister, Margaret, also preceded him in death.
He was a retired painter foreman for the Town of Greenwich, Conn.
Mr. Mahood was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill, and the Knights of Columbus. He was retired chief steward of Teamsters Union Local #456.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
Surviving: his wife of 62 years, Mary M. Donnelly Mahood; a son, Charles Mahood and his wife, Jean, of Greenwich, Conn.; a brother, Jimmy Mahood and wife, Betty, of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Taya Mahood and Alyse Mahood, both of Greenwich; a goddaughter, Lynda Wigglesworth of Bridgeport, Conn.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial was Sept. 26 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Entombment was at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Oak Hill with military graveside rites by VFW Post #3110, Oak Hill.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 123 Elmore Street, Oak Hill WV 25901.

William Farris ‘Bill’ McDaniel
William Farris “Bill” McDaniel, 78, of Merritt Island, Fla., died Sept. 6, 2008, at Wuestoff Hospice Care Center, Rockledge, Fla., following an extended illness.
Born May 23, 1930, at Garten, he was the son of the late James Clarence McDaniel and Clara Susan Donnelly McDaniel. He was preceded in death by his father James C. McDaniel in 1980; mother Clara S. Orndorff in 2003; step-father Alonzo C. Orndorff in 1990; wife Matoaka McDaniel in 2000; and brother Richard Allen McDaniel in 1987.
Mr. McDaniel was a United States Air Force veteran, honorably discharged at the rank of staff sergeant. He was a retired aeronautics engineer.
Surviving: his daughters, Becky LeVaugh and husband Richard of Merritt Island, Karen Rodriguez and husband Jerry of Brandon, Fla., and Moriha Buck and husband Ed of Guysville, Ohio; grandson Donald Woodham Jr.; granddaughters, Brenda Hersey, Saundra Buck and Nicole Rodriguez; and a special cousin, Dorothy Hostetter and husband Jim of Atlanta, Ga.
Graveside services were held Sept. 15 at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with Rev. Delvin Elwell officiating.

Virgil Roscoe Persinger
Virgil Roscoe Persinger, 75, of Oak Hill, died Sept. 23, 2008, at home following an extended illness.
Born on June 30, 1933, at Sinks Grove, he was the son of the late Opie and Blanche Persinger. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Persinger; two sisters; and a grandson.
Mr. Persinger was a retired coal miner and a member of Moose Lodge No. 1664. He was an avid woodworker.
Surviving: a son, Alfred W. “Rick” Nugen and wife, Betty, of Minden; daughters, Jean Shockey of Shinnston, Linda Lee of Weston, Brenda Nugen of Merritt Island, Fla., and Willa Stewart and husband, Wayne, of Shinnston; a brother, Bobby Persinger and wife, Crystal, of Alderson; extended family, Brenda and Andrew Roles of Oak Hill; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was Sept. 26 at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Ron George Jr. officiating. Burial followed at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Rebecca Rae Plasha
Rebecca Rae Plasha, 58, of Lochgelly, died Sept. 27, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born Dec. 8, 1949, at Kingston, she was the daughter of the late Betty Lou Nicholls Plasha and John James Plasha. She also was preceded in death by an older sister, Sharon Kay Plasha.
Becky had been a beloved resident at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Oak Hill for a number of years. She had been a member of the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene since she was a child. Her church family received numerous blessings throughout the years because of her.
Services were Oct. 1 at Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. She was entombed beside her parents at the High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Oak Hill.

Darrell Eugene ‘Sam’ Ward
Darrell Eugene “Sam” Ward, 65, of Newnan, Ga., died Sept. 27, 2008, following a long illness.
A graduate of Montgomery High School, he was preceded in death by his parents, Abby and Grace Ward.
Darrell was a member of the Newnan United Methodist Church. He was a retired banker with 43 years of service. He was very active in many of the social events and charitable organizations in Naples, Fla., American Heart Association, board of directors; Neighborhood Health Clinic, board of directors, treasurer; Collier County Chamber of Commerce (Leadership Collier); Marco Island Healthcare, board of directors; Naples Community Hospital Foundation Committee; Marco Island YMCA; Marco Island Chamber of Commerce (Leadership Marco); Community Foundation of Collier County, board of directors; and David Lawrence Center, Foundation board of directors. Darrell belonged to the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite.
Surviving: his devoted wife, Janet Adkins Ward of Newnan, Ga.; daughters and their children, Kelli Ward Humes and husband Jim and their sons, Jamie, Carson and Justin of Peachtree City, Ga., and Kristi Ward Close and her husband Jeffrey and their sons, Hunter and Parker of Naples, Fla.; brother, Robert E. Ward of Duluth, Ga.; sister-in-law, Janice Cude of Martinez, Ga.; brother-in-law, Wayne Adkins and his wife Frances of Dallas, Texas; nieces, Lisa McGee of Dallas, Alisha Nunnenkamp of Plano, Texas, and Debbie Copeland of Georgia; and nephews, Michael Cude of Martinez, Ga., and Robbie Ward and Carey Ward, both of Monroe, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Jim Dempsey and Rev. Bill Smith officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral at the funeral home. Burial with Masonic graveside rites will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, at the funeral home.
