Nancy Gail Campbell
Nancy Gail Campbel died at her home in Scarbro on March 5, 2010.
Born Sept. 3, 1970, in Oak Hill, Nancy was the daughter of the late Ballard Bryant and Daisy Richmond Bryant.
All of the people whose lives were touched by Nancy will forever cherish her memory.
Surviving: her husband, Charlie Campbell, whose love and devotion has been boundless; her siblings, David Bryant, Wayne Bryant, Angela Humphrey, Alisa Fitzwater and Cathleen Bryant; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.
Funeral service was held March 10 at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Lum Toney officiating. Burial followed in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Janie Ellen Kirk
Mrs. Janie Ellen Kirk, 83, of Valley, Ala., peacefully departed this life on March 2, 2010, at Lanier Memorial Hospital, with her family by her side.
Born Dec. 19, 1926, at Kaymoor, she was the daughter of the late Eva Lee Johnson Marshall and Eddie Marshall. She also was preceded in death by her sisters, Hilda Eads, Camilla Miller and Velva Mae King; and her brothers, Manuel Marshall, Denny Marshall and Thomas Marshall.
Mrs. Kirk moved from Oak Hill with her husband to Valley in 1981, and she worked at Stuckey’s for several years. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed baking, spending time with her family and was an avid Braves fan.
Surviving: her husband of 53 years, Clinton Kirk; daughters, Anita Bowles of Valley and Deena (Jimmy) Sanders of Lanett; son, Clinton (Sarah) Kirk Jr. of Capon Bridge; sister, Annadean Thomas of Tampa, Fla.; brothers, Frank Marshall and Don Marshall, both of Lanett; granddaughters, Tamie Bowles of Elkview, Lori (Paul) McAllister of Hixson, Tenn., Carrie (Zeke) Billingslea of West Point, Ga., Yvonne (Robbie) Powers and Lisa (Billy) Noel, all of Nokesville, Va., and Nicole Sanders of Lanett; grandsons, David (April) Bowles Jr. of Elkview, Billy (Lisa) Kirk of Martinsburg and Brian Sanders of Lanett; and great-grandchildren, Zoe, Maya and Sophie Billingslea, Shelby and David Bowles III, Sara and Nathan McAllister, Morgan and Miranda Noel, Felicity, Alexis and Nathaniel Kirk.
The funeral was held at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley on March 5 with Rev. Frank Pearce officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.

Alice Ina Law
Alice Ina Law, 87, of Fayetteville, died March 3, 2010 at CAMC General Hospital, Charleston.
Born Feb. 16, 1923, at Ajax, she was the daughter of the late William John and Sarah Bessie Donnally Dickson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Audna “Bill” Law.
Mrs. Law was a member of Fayetteville United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Democratic Women’s Club of Fayette County.
Surviving: her son, John D. Law of Charleston; daughter, Nancy Potter and husband Dan of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Lisa Wolff and husband Doug of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kenneth E. Young Jr. of Charleston, and Aaron H. Young of Kegley; and great-grandchildren, Kaegan H. Young of Kegley, and Madison Young and Mason Young, both of Oak Hill.
Funeral services were March 7 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn officiating. Burial followed in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Penny McGuire
Penny McGuire, 52, of Newberry, Fla., formerly of Meadow Bridge, died March 1, 2010, following a long illness.
Born March 17, 1957, at Meadow Bridge, she was the daughter of Madleen (Crickett) Surface of Meadow Bridge and the late Robert C. Surface. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Mike and Billy Surface.
Penny was a nurse at North Florida Regional Medical Center for 23 years. She was very active in Newberry Athletics, the Gainesville Youth Chorus and loved to travel.
She attended Jonesville Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to her mother; her daughters, Megan and Miranda McGuire, both of Florida; sister, Teresa Mitton and husband Michael; and nephews, Bobby, Cody and Billy Jones.
Services were March 8 in the Meadow Bridge United Methodist Church with Pastor Roger Booth officiating. Burial followed in the Patton Memorial Cemetery at Meadow Bridge.

Garlan G. “Boozer” Mellich, 79, of Hopewell Road, Victor, died March 2, 2010.

Ellen Fontana Redden
Ellen Fontana Redden, 69, of Oak Hill, died March 5, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center.
Born May 19, 1940, at Mount Hope, she was the daughter of the late Mike Fontana and Leona LaMaster Fontana. Ellen also was preceded in death by a brother, Mike Fontana.
She had worked for Hilltop Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide and was a homemaker. Ellen loved and spent her life providing childcare to many in the Oak Hill area.
She was a member of the Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle, and for the past six years she was attending the Scarbro Methodist Church.
Surviving: a son, the Rev. Jim Elmore and his wife, Kim, of Oak Hill; a daughter, Tricha Altmann and her husband, Byron, of Abingdon, Va.; a brother, Dallas Fontana and his wife, Kay, of Silver Springs, Md.; grandchildren, Shana Elmore Clay and her husband, Morgan, of Charleston, and Adam and Brittni Altmann of Abingdon, Va.
Funeral service was held March 7 at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Allen Gallimore and the Rev. David Meser officiating. Burial followed in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.

Kenneth Edward Roop
Kenneth Edward Roop, 63, of Jodie, died March 6, 2010, at Raleigh General Hospital.
Born July 14, 1946, at Jodie, he was the son of the late Walter Gordon and Ica Laurel Carr Roop. He also was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Roger Roop; brother, Randall Roop; and sisters, Carolyn Cox and Judy Painter.
Mr. Roop was an equipment operator for Powellton Coal Company, and a member of Jodie Baptist Church. He was a member and Past Master of the Galuey Bridge Masonic Lodge #64 A.F. & A.M., and Ansted VFW Post # 7695. He also was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Era.
He was a former fire chief of the Gauley River Volunteer Fire Department, and former member, engineer, and training officer for the Gauley Bridge Fire Department.
Surviving: his wife, Beverly L. Foster Roop of Jodie; son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Jennifer Roop of Gauley Bridge; daughter, Tressie Heather Roop of Athens; and sisters and brother-in-law, Jo Ann Neil of Jodie, and Jane and Nathan Bush of Jodie.
Funeral services were March 10 at the Jodie Baptist Church. Burial with Masonic rites conducted by Masonic Lodge #64 A.F. & A.M. and military graveside rites conducted by Ansted VFW Post #7695, was in the Rich Creek Community Cemetery, Jodie.

Selma Christine Bennett Rose
Selma Christine Bennett Rose, 87, of New Port Richey, Fla., died March 3, 2010, at her home.
Born June 5, 1922, at Kingston, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Sina Toney Bennett. Her husband, Wilburn Rudy Rose Sr., preceded her in death on July 23, 2009.
Surviving: sons, Wilburn R. Rose Jr. of Falls Church, Va., and Roger Lee Rose of Ijamsville, Md.; daughters, Barbara Jean Stackhouse of Spring Hill, Fla., Sharon Kay Vanover of New Port Richey, and Brenda Christine Blevins of Stafford, Va.; sister, Louise Blake; 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be on Friday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. Joe Cuthbertson officiating. Entombment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Prosperity.
Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, on Thursday, March 11 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Cecil Lewis Slayton
Cecil Lewis Slayton, 67, of Orient Hill, died March 2, 2010, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea following a short illness.
Born Dec. 17, 1942, in East Rainelle, he was the son of the late Cecil Lee and Fannie May Walden Slayton. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Lula Knapp Slayton, and sisters, Mildred Fairchild and Zella Boggess.
Cecil hauled coal in the Nicholas County area and later hauled materials for West Virginia Paving.
Surviving: daughters, Carol Blankenship of Rainelle and April Hundley of Meadow Bridge; brothers, Eddie, Johnnie and Jackie Slayton, all out of state; sisters, Bonnie Slusher, Nancy Welch and Shelby Slayton, all out of state; and grandchildren, Haley Blankenship of Rainelle, and Jenna, Caleb and Gage Hundley, all of Meadow Bridge.
As he requested, the body was cremated. A celebration of his life was held March 7 at the Orient Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Luchsinger officiating.

William Russell Thomas Jr., 65, of Oak Hill, died March 4, 2010, at his home.
Born Oct. 17, 1944, at Lochgelly, he was the son of the late William Russell Thomas Sr. and Mary Evelyn Cox Thomas.
Surviving: his son, William R. Thomas III of Warner Robbins, Ga.; daughters, Angela and Sheila, both of Cleveland, Ohio; brothers, Donald Wayne Thomas of Ohio and Kenneth E. Thomas of Pennsylvania; and five grandchildren.
Services were March 6 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill. Burial was at IOOF Cemetery in Oak Hill.

Billy A. Wykle
Billy A. Wykle, 83, of Loops Road, Rainelle, died late the night of March 5, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, as a result of an automobile accident.
Born July 30, 1926, at Greenwood, he was the son of the late Arthur William and Mary Hester Burdette Wykle. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth E. Meadows Wykle, in 2003; a son, William Howard Wykle; a sister, Betty Mosely; and brothers, Richard and Charles Wykle.
Before retirement, Bill had worked as a grader operator on road construction, and as a coal miner.
Surviving: daughter, Ruth Harmon and husband Billy of Clintonville; sons, Kenneth Wykle and wife Gail of White Sulphur Springs, Doug Wykle and wife Linda of Loops Road, Keith Wykle and wife Marie of South Carolina, Curtis Wykle and wife Brenda of Loops Road, Ernest Wykle of Loops Road, and Clayton Wykle of Maple Fork; grandchildren, Amy Ennis, Crystal Wykle, Mindy Reed, Cynthia Robert, Mark Smailes, Curtis Wykle Jr., Jason Wykle, Michael Wykle, Lisa Wykle, Clarissa Wykle, Steven Wykle, Keith Wykle Jr., Colton Wykle, D.J. Wykle, Jeremy Wykle, Brandy Wykle and Faith Wykle; and stepgrandchildren, Cecil and James Harmon; 14 great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services were March 8 at Faith Baptist Church of Rupert, with Pastor Floyd Bolen officiating. Burial followed at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.
