Agnes Wandalene Adkins

Agnes Wandalene Adkins, 76, of Beckley, died July 21, 2010, following a long illness.

Born March 30, 1934, at Clifftop, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Wilsie Eagle Carte. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Alvie N. Adkins; son, Charles A. Adkins; brothers, George, Olen, Oden, Otis and James Carte; and sisters, Corra Carte and Pansey Carte Tolley.

Mrs. Adkins worked as a dietician in the medical profession for the U.S. government and was of the Baptist faith. She was known for her love of fishing.

Surviving: son, Alvie N. Adkins Jr. and wife Loydia of Chino Valley, Ariz.; daughters, Wannetta Joyce Weis and husband Teddy of Terry, Rosetta Lynn Adkins and Vanessa A. Jones and husband David, all of Piney View; brother, Samuel Carte of Maryland; sister, Eula Carte Jordan of Martha, Ky.; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mrs. Adkins’s life was held July 24 at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor George Wood officiating. Burial followed in the Bethel Cemetery at Corliss.

Hilda Jean Belmont

Hilda Jean Belmont, 68, of Oak Hill, died July 24, 2010, at BARH in Beckley.

Born Aug. 29, 1941, at Fire Creek, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Hunt and the late Martha Trump Owens. She also was preceded in death by her sisters, Lola Vargo and Nancy Cale.

Hilda was a homemaker.

Surviving: daughter, Cami Belmont Suzza and husband Jack of Oak Hill; sons: Michael Belmont of Nashville, Tenn., and Keith Belmont, Gary Belmont and Doug Belmont, all of Oak Hil; grandchildren, Kristin Belmont, Destiny Belmont, Lindsey Young, Zachary Suzza, Jonathan Suzza and Nickolas Suzza; brother, Joseph Hunt of Winona; and a sister, Janice Tagalicod of Cleveland, Ohio.

Funeral services were July 27 at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Lonnie Frank Cooper

Lonnie Frank Cooper, 58, of Victor, died July 18, 2010, following a short illness.

Born March 6, 1952, at Gauley Bridge, he was the son of the late Elza Ezra and Mandy Lucille Cooper. He also was preceded in death by a brother, William Fredrick Cooper.

Lonnie was a trustee of Emmanuel Baptist Church, a retired coal miner and member of  the UMWA, a loving father of three and proud grandfather of five, as well as an active WVU sports fan.

Surviving: his wife of 40 years, Cora Leah Cooper; son, Christopher Tony Cooper and wife Brenda of Victor; daughter, Debra Lynn Cooper-Ellison and husband Michael of Huntington; son, Shawn Michael Cooper and wife Stacy of Victor; five deeply loved and cherished grandchildren, Abigail Grace, Alexander Davis, Kaylee Marie, Kendra Nevaeh and baby Cooper; brothers, Donald Lee Cooper of Mobile, Ala., the Rev. Ronald James Cooper of Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Rev. Elza Ezra “Jr.”Cooper of Chimney Corner, Wayne Arthur Cooper of Oak Hill and David Luman Cooper of Gauley Bridge; and sisters, Joyce Marie Belt of Bomont, Janet Faye Ocheltree of Smoot and Anna Belle Vandall of Fayetteville.

Services were July 23 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted, with Pastor Justin Seay officiating. Burial followed at Cooper Family Cemetery on Willis Branch Road in Victor.

Justin Alexander Davis

Justin Alexander Davis of Oak Hill died July 23, 2010.

Born Oct. 3, 1990, in Beckley, he fought hard for his life for approximately 2 days.

He attended Bridgemont Community College in hopes of becoming a diesel mechanic.

Justin never met a stranger. He was a beautiful boy with a heart of gold. He had a great love for trucks, 4-wheelers, motorcycles and chrome.

Surviving: mother, Mia Secrist Davis of Oak Hill; father, Johnny Davis of Oak Hill; sister, Samantha Davis of Oak Hill; grandparents, Holly and Belina Secrist of Fayetteville, Rocky Davis and wife Susie of Oak Hill, Yvonne Sims of Oak Hill and stepgrandfather Darrin Bostic of Oak Hill; great-grandfather, George Burgess of Oak Hill; and uncle, Brandon Davis of Oak Hill.

Funeral services were July 26 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Mark Secrist officiating. Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Mary Betty Jean Underwood Humphrey

Mary Betty Jean Underwood Humphrey, 80, of Oak Hill, died July 20, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Sept. 14, 1929, at Glen Morgan, she was the daughter of the late George Robert and Crystal L. Martin Underwood. Her husband, Armon J. Humphrey; sister, Karen; brothers, James Underwood, Earl Underwood, Howard Underwood and Wayne Underwood; and a grandson, Stephen, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Humphrey was a member of the Oak Hill Alliance Church.

A retired part-time postmaster for the Thurmond Post Office, Mary served as bookkeeper for the town of Thurmond and was active in the Thurmond Reunion.

Up until the last year she loved to do her 5-mile daily walks.

Surviving: daughters, Shirley J. Miller and husband Sterling of Mount Hope and Gayle Humphrey of Oak Hill; sons, Armon J. Humphrey Jr. and wife Sherry of MacArthur, Robert Wayne “Bobby" Humphrey and wife Sharon of Red Star, and David Paul Humphrey and wife Julie of Hilltop; sisters, Sharon Campbell and husband David of Oregon, Donna Smith and husband Ken of South Carolina, Sally Bloxton and husband Alfred of Red Star, Lelia McClung of Hilltop and Helen Howell of Kansas City, Kan.; brothers, Robert Underwood and wife Margaret Staggers of Fayetteville, Jack Underwood of Hilltop and David Underwood and wife Elsie of Mississippi; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren

Services were July 24 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with the Revs. Fred Joseph and Albert “Skip” Bowman officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Melvin Joseph Martin, 71, of Meadow Bridge, died July 24, 2010, in the Beckley VA Medical Center following a long illness.

A visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at Smathers Funeral Chapel with a funeral service at 7:30 p.m.

Douglas Lamont Penn, 55, of Mt. Hope, died July 14, 2010, at his residence.

Funeral services were 1July 23 at Newark NPC, 73 Salem Church Road, Newark, Del. Burial followed in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

James A. Perdue

James Arthur Perdue, 54, of Fayetteville, died July 22, 2010.

Born March 16, 1956, in Mullens, he was the son of the late Raymond Earl and Ruby Garnet Ward Perdue. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph Perdue, and sisters, Flora Sue Whisman and Wanda Holliday.

Mr. Perdue was a retired maintenance supervisor at the Fayette County Courthouse, Fayetteville, with 31 years of service.

Surviving: his wife, Ava Pritt Perdue of Fayetteville; daughter, Katrinka Broderick and husband James of Pomeroy, Ohio; brothers, Ray Perdue and Danny Perdue; sisters, Janice Miller, Laura Bickford, Nancy Grosz, and Althea Moody; his buddy, Judge John Hatcher; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services were July 27 at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville. Burial followed at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Susan Lynn Wilkerson Plumley

Susan Lynn Wilkerson Plumley, 36, of Hilltop, died July 21, 2010, at her home.

Born Oct. 8, 1973, at Beckley, she was the daughter of Gary Lee and Jennifer Curtis Yago Wilkerson of Hilltop.

A brother, Gary Bradford Wilkerson; paternal grandparents, Eugene and Gladys Wilkerson; and maternal grandfather, Curtis Yago, preceded her in death.

Susan was a member of the Dunbar United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving, in addition to her parents: her husband, Paul Plumley; sons, Nicholas Andrew Foust and Bradley Garrison Elwell, both of Hilltop; daughter, Jordan Lee Elwell of Hilltop; brother, Sean Lee Wilkerson of Hilltop; sister, Amy Jo Powell of Fernando Beach, Fla.; and her maternal grandmother, Caroline Yago of Dunbar.

Services were July 26 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Joseph Criss officiating. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Robert L. “Chicken” Ross, 70, of New Castle, Del., formerly of Glen Jean, died July 19, 2010.

Virginia Mae Small

Virginia Mae Small, 79, of Winona, died July 22, 2010, in Appalachian Regional Hospital of Beckley, following an extended illness.

Born Feb. 6, 1931, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late George and Iva Ramsey Stokley.  She also was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Walker Small, and her sister, Wanda Jean King.

Mrs. Small was a member of Keeney’s Creek Baptist Church of Winona and a homemaker.

Surviving: her sons, Dennis Walker Small and his wife, Judith, and Lewis Edward Small, all of Winona; daughter, Paula June Coburn and her husband, Michael, of Princeton; five grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

Funeral services were July 25 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor.

Linvell ‘Link’ Workman

Linvell “Link” Workman, 69, of Edmond, died July 19, 2010, at CAMC-Memorial Division, Charleston, following a short illness.

Born Feb. 11, 1941, in Vico, Ky., he was the son of the late Samuel and Eva Mae Walter Workman.

Mr. Workman was a disabled truck driver, a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving: his wife, Gayle Willis Workman; daughters, Kari Whitten and husband Daren of Pearisburg, Va., and April Workman of Edmond; a son, Jeffery  Workman of Beckley; sisters, Mary Lou Watt and Wanda Gayle Workman; a brother, James Workman of Union Furnace, Ohio; grandchildren, Stephanie Holcomb, Ashley Williams, Jennifer Syner, Jeff Workman, Ciara Whitten and Dylan Workman; and great-grandchildren, Riley Workman and Kaylee Williams.

Services were July 22 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted, with Rev. Daren Whitten officiating. Burial followed in Nuttall Cemetery at Edmond.
