Richard Isack Akers Sr.
Richard Isack Akers Sr., 79, of Layland, died March 27, 2011, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, following a long illness.
Born Jan. 15, 1932, in Wytheville, Va., he was the son of the late Emmett Akers and Mamie Shrewsbury Akers.
Mr. Akers was a retired coal miner. He had made his home at Layland area for the past 40 years, having been a former Wyoming County resident.
Surviving: his sons, Richard I. Akers Jr. of Layland, Randall E. Akers of Charmco, and Ronald Gene Akers of Layland; brother, James Kelly Akers of Beckley; and a sister, Josephine Akers of Stephenson.
Funeral services were April 2 at the Layland Baptist Church at Layland, with Pastor Floyd Bolen officiating. Burial followed at the Layland Cemetery at Layland.

James Gilbert Clay
James Gilbert Clay, 51, of Mount Hope, died April 1, 2011, at his home.
Born Dec. 29, 1959, at Pax, he was the son of the late Alfred and Nora Ann Ratliff Clay.
He was a disabled construction concrete worker.
Surviving: daughters, Jamie Clay Ellison of Cross Lanes, Sarah Powers of Allen Park, Mich., and Amanda Sue Clay of Mount Hope; and a sister, Pamela Morris of Oak Hill.
At his request, Mr. Clay was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Nancy Wright Day
Nancy Wright Day, 77, of Troutville, Va., formerly of Clinton, Md., died April 1, 2011.
A native of Danese, she was preceded in death by her mother, Hazel A. Wright; brothers, C.B. and Patrick Wright; and sisters, Betty Hill and Polly Lavender.
Surviving: her husband, Nathan J. Day; son, Jay R. Day and wife Patricia of New Castle, Va.; daughter, Diane Carver and husband James of Maryland; grandchildren, James, Caitlyn, Nathan P., Courtney, Nathan, Stephanie and Shannon; sisters, Jean Smith and husband Don of Virginia, and Ann Lawson and husband Jack of Tennessee; and a host of her special children, who considered her as Mom.
Funeral services were April 5 Oakey’s North Chapel, Roanoke, Va., with the Rev. Clifford Burwell officiating.
