Viola Stidham Collins

Viola Stidham Collins, 90, of Oak Hill, died Dec.13, 2013, at Fayette Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Fayetteville.

Born July 1, 1923, at Hazard, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Allen D. and Rosella Bowman Stidham. She also was preceded in death by a son, Carl C. Collins.

Violet was a homemaker and attended the Church of God.

A graveside committal service, followed by burial, was held Dec. 16 at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating.

Larkin Edward DeLung

Larkin Edward DeLung, 68, of Mossy, died Dec. 15, 2013, in Raleigh General Hospital at Beckley.

Born April 18, 1945, he was the son of the late James Marvin and Ida Lafferty DeLung of Mossy. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Ada Lou Davis of Dothan.

He will be missed by all.

Surviving: his daughter, Sherry and husband Victor Metz of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Ashley and James Cottrell, and Tiffani and Brooke Metz; brothers, James DeLung and wife Patricia of Laurel, Md., and Frank DeLung and wife Sharon of Oak Hill; sister, Gayle Kees and husband J.R. of McHenry, Miss.; aunt, Louise Treadway of Beckley; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dreama Jane Hudson Domingues

Dreama Jane Hudson Domingues, 55, of Beckley, formerly of Mount Hope, died Dec. 10, 2013, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington.

Born June 24, 1958, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Betty Ann Arthur Hudson.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving: son, Matthew Domingues of Virginia; daughter, Mandy Lawson of Beckley; brother, James Fredrick Hacker; sisters, Debora Blake, Donna Jean Johnson and Mary Ethel Johnson; and numerous other family members.

A private visitation was held Dec. 13 at the Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope. In honoring Dreama’s wishes she will be cremated.

Esther Charlotte Brooks Ellison

Esther Charlotte Brooks Ellison, 91, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 14, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born Aug. 3, 1922, in Fayetteville, she was the daughter of the late John Erle and Sarah Edith Pickett Brooks. She was the granddaughter of the late Rev. Charles Albert and Edith Rose Howard Pickett, with whom she made her home. She was married to George Milton Ellison on June 16, 1951, until his death on Jan. 30, 1991.

Esther graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1940. Studied with Mac Farland School of Floristry, Cary, N.C., and New York School of Interior Design in New York City.

She was owner and operator of Summersville Floral and Esther’s House in Summersville from 1966 through 1983.

She was society editor of The Fayette Tribune from 1951 through 1967 and was a cashier at the Oak Hill and Mayfair theaters from 1938 through 1947.

She was also a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Oak Hill, and Woodland Oaks Garden Club.

Surviving: son, George Timothy “Tim” Ellison of Summersville; daughter, Rose Pickett Ellison Grove of Douglasville, Ga.; granddaughter, April Brooke Reece of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and brother, William Edward Brooks of Houston, Texas.

Funeral service was Dec. 17 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Oak Hill, with Rev. Roy Crist officiating. Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Deward ‘Swipy’ Horrocks

Deward “Swipy” Horrocks died Dec. 12, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born in Winona, Swipy was the son of the late John and Jessie Tincher Horrocks.

He retired from U.S. Steel Corp. and returned to his home town where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with this family.

Surviving: his daughter, Kay Dawson and her husband, Jeffrey; grandchildren, Jennifer Mikesell and husband Jeff, John Lucci, Julie Lucci and Jessica Dawson; great-grandchildren, Lorelei, Annabel and Dominic; sisters, Alfretta Braithwaite of Harrisonburg Va., JoAnn Redmon of Charleston and Nancy Fannin of Longs, S.C.; a brother, DeVAn Horrocks of Cathedral City, Calif.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation and a celebration of his life were held Dec. 15 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted. Rev. Mark Secrist officiated.

Carol Ann Markley

Carol Ann Markley, 68, of Danese, died Dec. 13, 2013.

Born Aug. 24, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Peter Robert and Ann Maharidge Guddy. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John Markley; and a brother, David Guddy.

Surviving: sons, Ray Markley and wife Mary and Joseph Markley and wife Kimberly; stepsons, Johnny Markley, Randy Markley and David Wright; grandchildren, Jennifer Markley, William Markley, Agusta Markley, Rachel Markley, Savanah Markley, Ray Markley II and Abaigale Markley; sisters, Stella Shaffer, Linda Alford and Jean Parshall; and brothers, Paul Guddy, Carl Guddy and Robert Guddy.

Service was Dec. 17 at High Lawn Funeral Chapel, Oak Hill, with Rev. Benney Kenney officiating.

Tommy Simms

Tommy Simms, 60, of Oak Hill, died unexpectedly on Dec. 12, 2013.

Born Aug. 31, 1953, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Cornelius Houston and Marjorie Oiler Simms. His former wife, Jane Ann Samuels Simms, also preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 2013.

Tommy was a kind, tender-hearted man.

He was a coal miner, having dedicated 35 years to his employment. In his spare time he liked to hunt, fish, watch NASCAR and do woodworking.

Surviving: his loving daughters who were the center of his life, Lesley Simms of Fayetteville and Brittney Simms of Fayetteville; his only grandchild, Brynnlee Jackson of Fayetteville; brothers, Larry Simms and wife Carol of Gatewood, Jimmy Simms and wife Ann of Hartville, Ohio, Roger Simms and wife Carolyn of Whiteland, Ind., Michael Simms and wife Karen of Plum Orchard, Connie Mack Simms and wife Jennie of Oak Hill, Paul Dean Simms and wife Bernie of Dale City, Va., and Bruce Simms and wife Jennifer of Oak Hill; sisters, Lois O’Daniels of Wilmington, N.C., Trenia Christianson of Seattle, Wash., Vicki Maynard and husband Randy of China and Madge Hamilton and companion Bob Kelly of Cape Coral, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Dec. 18 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Ernie Francis officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Cassie Lynn Hosler Withrow

Cassie Lynn Hosler Withrow, 40, the beloved wife of Earl K. Withrow of Scarbro, died unexpectedly on Dec. 9, 2013.

Born June 7, 1973, at Elkhart, Ind., she was the daughter of Robert and Martha Grimsley Hosler of Elkhart.

She also was preceded in death by her grandparents, Evelyn and Fred Wilson of Elkhart; grandmother, Charlene Hosler of Elkhart, and Judy Bair of New Albany, Ind..

She was a member of the Spirit and Truth Ministries, Oak Hill.

Cassie was a graduate of Elkhart Central High School, Elkhart.

She will long be remembered for her love of life, her joy of singing and karaoke, and her endearment to all things “Mickey Mouse.”

Surviving, in addition to her parents and husband: her loving daughter, Brittany Hosler; stepsons, Joshua and Raymond Withrow of Oak Hill; sister, Melissa (Joseph) Withrow of Elkhart, Ind.; her adoring grandchildren, Kaleighana Edmond, K’vion Miller and Kamron Painter, all of Oak Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Dec. 14 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Sam R. Calloway Jr. officiating. She was cremated following the service.
