Esther Charlotte Brooks Ellison
Esther Charlotte Brooks Ellison, 91, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 14, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.
Born Aug. 3, 1922, in Fayetteville, she was the daughter of the late John Erle and Sarah Edith Pickett Brooks. She was the granddaughter of the late Rev. Charles Albert and Edith Rose Howard Pickett, with whom she made her home. She was married to George Milton Ellison on June 16, 1951, until his death on Jan. 30, 1991.
Esther graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1940. Studied with Mac Farland School of Floristry, Cary, N.C., and New York School of Interior Design in New York City.
She was owner and operator of Summersville Floral and Esther’s House in Summersville from 1966 through 1983.
She was society editor of The Fayette Tribune from 1951 through 1967 and was a cashier at the Oak Hill and Mayfair theaters from 1938 through 1947.
She was also a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Oak Hill, and Woodland Oaks Garden Club.
Surviving: son, George Timothy “Tim” Ellison of Summersville; daughter, Rose Pickett Ellison Grove of Douglasville, Ga.; granddaughter, April Brooke Reece of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and brother, William Edward Brooks of Houston, Texas.
Funeral service was Dec. 17 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Oak Hill, with Rev. Roy Crist officiating. Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Deward ‘Swipy’ Horrocks
Deward “Swipy” Horrocks died Dec. 12, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
Born in Winona, Swipy was the son of the late John and Jessie Tincher Horrocks.
He retired from U.S. Steel Corp. and returned to his home town where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with this family.
Surviving: his daughter, Kay Dawson and her husband, Jeffrey; grandchildren, Jennifer Mikesell and husband Jeff, John Lucci, Julie Lucci and Jessica Dawson; great-grandchildren, Lorelei, Annabel and Dominic; sisters, Alfretta Braithwaite of Harrisonburg Va., JoAnn Redmon of Charleston and Nancy Fannin of Longs, S.C.; a brother, DeVAn Horrocks of Cathedral City, Calif.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation and a celebration of his life were held Dec. 15 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted. Rev. Mark Secrist officiated.
