Sarah Delores Carper Peters

Sarah Delores Carper Peters, 80, of Kincaid, died Dec. 25, 2013, in Florence, Miss.

Mrs. Peters took care of her family and was a very devoted member of the Page Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school, vacation Bible school and took on many other active roles for the church.

Mrs. Peters was preceded in death by her son, Vernon Peters II, and her siblings.

Surviving: her husband, Vernon Peters of Kincaid; daughter, Vicki (Lowell) Poe of Florence, Miss.; grandchildren, Wayne Poe and Kevin (Terra) Poe of Florence, and Vernon Peters III and Jennifer (Marshall) Tincher of Kincaid; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was Dec. 30 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

John Lawrence Puckett

John Lawrence Puckett, 77, of Lansing, surrounded by his family, died Dec. 25, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Born Aug. 9, 1936, at Lansing, he was the son of the late John and Thelma Puckett Kincaid. He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Juanita Gray and Mary Clark, and brother Robert Puckett.

Mr. Puckett was raised in Lansing, lived and worked for 48 years in Charleston, then returned to his home place after retiring from CAMC.

He was a self-employed Master Carpenter.  

Surviving: his wife of 53 years, Mary M. Puckett; two daughters and three grandchildren, Sandra Lynn Roberts and son Frank M. Roberts IV of Florida, Melissa Gwen Taylor and daughter Katy P. Taylor and son Augustus B. Taylor, and Melissa’s fiancé, Aaron L. Smith, all of Charleston; sisters, Delma Bailes of Florida, Annabelle Hodge of Lansing, Erma Shannon of Buffalo, Barbara Marty of Victor and Linda Arbaugh of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services were held Dec. 28 at Lansing Cemetery in Lansing. Burial followed at the cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Hayes officiating.

Fred Herbert Ryan

Fred Herbert Ryan, 86, of Mount Hope, died Dec. 28, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley,  following a short Illness.

Born April 25, 1927, in Norwood, Mo., he was the son of the late Fred Ervin and Charlene Lord Allen Ryan. His wife, Uvedis Bea Blevins Ryan; a brother, Raymond; and sister, Jean Keffer, also preceded him in death.

Fred was a federal mine inspector with M.S.H.A., a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, and a Mason with Mountain Lodge, No. 156 of Coal City AF&AM.

He was also an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving: sons, Barry Lane Ryan and wife Barbara of Morgantown, and Keith Gregory Ryan and wife Anne Davis of Morganfield, Ky.; brother, Wayne Ryan of Reidsville, N.C.; sisters, Delmae Walker of Aylett, Va., Lucille Farley of Daniels, Dorothy Smith of Mabscott, and Deanna Farmer of Coal City; grandchildren, Shawn Ryan, Kelly Giles and Sharon O’Nan; and great-grandchildren, Allison, Zachary, Landree and Grayson.

Funeral service was Dec. 31 at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with Doctors Sharon and Charles Miller officiating. Entombment followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Park Mausoleum, Prosperity.

Elsie May Beals Taylor

Elsie May Beals Taylor, 95, of Wriston, died Dec. 20, 2013, at Hilltop Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hilltop.

Born June 20, 1918, at Cheyenne, Okla., she was the daughter of the late Abe and Bertha Kiser Beals. Her first husband, Luther Copley; second husband, Ernest Taylor; grandson, Robert Settle; great-granddaughter, Montana Rose Riser; sisters, Gladys Blake and Virginia Ina Garrett; and brothers, David Beals, Kenneth Beals and Martin Beals also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of the Loop Creek Baptist Church at Wriston.

Surviving: her children, Betty Phillips and husband Virgil of Ashland, Ohio, Franklin D. Copley and wife Barbara of Latonia, Ky., and Eva Mae Settle and husband James of Wriston; sisters, Odella Pennington of Beards Fork, and Evelyn Abbott and Edna Kincaid, both of Oak Hill; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were Dec. 28 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Charles Webb officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Maj. Richard Pentreath Taylor

Major Richard Pentreath Taylor died peacefully at his home in Oak Hill on Christmas Day 2013.

Richard was born Jan. 14, 1940, in Oak Hill, the son of the late Willis and Marguerite Taylor. Richard also was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Taylor; brother, Thomas Taylor; and sister, Elizabeth Taylor Lindberg.

R.P., as he was known to his friends and family, retired from the Army after serving 22 years. During his service he flew Cobra Attack Helicopters in Vietnam and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, our nation’s third highest medal.

R.P. enjoyed hosting friends and family at his home; he was renowned for his love of cooking, fine wine, and long conversations with the people he loved.

Surviving: sons, Tim McGuffin and wife Gay of Oak Hill, Jake McGuffin of Oak Hill, Richard Taylor Jr. and wife Tabitha of Jacksonville, Fla., Ivey Taylor and wife Angie of Charlotte, N.C., Willis Taylor and wife Lisa of Clarksville, Tenn., and David Taylor and wife Nicole of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Darrin and wife Tega, Derek, Christopher, Valentina, Alexis, Jasmine, Karmen, Savannah, Alexandria, and Andrew; and great-grandchild, Haden McGuffin.

A celebration of Richard’s life and memorial service were held Dec. 31 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Oak Hill with Father Roy Crist officiating. Immediately following the service there was an honor guard service at Highlawn Memorial Park. A reception was held at St. Andrew’s after the services for family and friends.

Joann Feazell Wood

Joann Feazell Wood, 77, of Sea Level, N.C., formerly of Oak Hill and Fayetteville, died Dec. 24, 2013, at Snug Harbor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, EB “Monk” Wood, Jr.; her parents, Ray and Mildred Feazell; and a brother, Ray Feazell.

Surviving: her sons, David Wood and wife Kate of Morehead City, and Thomas Wood and wife Vera of Harkers Island; grandchildren, Frank Wood and Katie Wood, both of Harkers Island, and Laynie Cromwell of Morehead City.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 4, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, 350 W. Maple Ave., Fayetteville. Interment will follow at Huse Memorial Cemetery.
