Maj. Richard Pentreath Taylor

Major Richard Pentreath Taylor died peacefully at his home in Oak Hill on Christmas Day 2013.

Richard was born Jan. 14, 1940, in Oak Hill, the son of the late Willis and Marguerite Taylor. Richard also was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Taylor; brother, Thomas Taylor; and sister, Elizabeth Taylor Lindberg.

R.P., as he was known to his friends and family, retired from the Army after serving 22 years. During his service he flew Cobra Attack Helicopters in Vietnam and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, our nation’s third highest medal.

R.P. enjoyed hosting friends and family at his home; he was renowned for his love of cooking, fine wine, and long conversations with the people he loved.

Surviving: sons, Tim McGuffin and wife Gay of Oak Hill, Jake McGuffin of Oak Hill, Richard Taylor Jr. and wife Tabitha of Jacksonville, Fla., Ivey Taylor and wife Angie of Charlotte, N.C., Willis Taylor and wife Lisa of Clarksville, Tenn., and David Taylor and wife Nicole of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Darrin and wife Tega, Derek, Christopher, Valentina, Alexis, Jasmine, Karmen, Savannah, Alexandria, and Andrew; and great-grandchild, Haden McGuffin.

A celebration of Richard’s life and memorial service were held Dec. 31 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Oak Hill with Father Roy Crist officiating. Immediately following the service there was an honor guard service at Highlawn Memorial Park. A reception was held at St. Andrew’s after the services for family and friends.

Joann Feazell Wood

Joann Feazell Wood, 77, of Sea Level, N.C., formerly of Oak Hill and Fayetteville, died Dec. 24, 2013, at Snug Harbor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, EB “Monk” Wood, Jr.; her parents, Ray and Mildred Feazell; and a brother, Ray Feazell.

Surviving: her sons, David Wood and wife Kate of Morehead City, and Thomas Wood and wife Vera of Harkers Island; grandchildren, Frank Wood and Katie Wood, both of Harkers Island, and Laynie Cromwell of Morehead City.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 4, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, 350 W. Maple Ave., Fayetteville. Interment will follow at Huse Memorial Cemetery.
