Rev. Delvin D. (D.D.) Elwell
Rev. Delvin D. (D.D.) Elwell, 83, of Lewisburg, formerly of Fayetteville and Hinton, died July 28, 2013, at the Summers Nursing and Rehab following a long illness.
Born Nov. 2, 1929, at Cunard, he was the son of the late John O. and Cora McClung Elwell. He also was preceded in death by a brother, John Robert Elwell.
He was a devoted minister who pastored many churches in Southern West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky until his retirement from full-time ministry as the pastor of First Baptist Church of Hinton.
D.D. was a 1948 graduate and a standout high school football player at Fayetteville High School, 1953 graduate of Bob Jones University, former member of the Summers County Board of Education, and avid Mountaineer and Summers County Bobcats fan.
He will be fondly remembered for his voice and musical talent which he used to bring glory to his Lord and Savior. He had the privilege to pray in the United States Senate. His love and passion was for the Lord and his ministry that God had blessed him with.
Surviving: his loving and devoted wife of 61 1/2 years, June M. Elwell of Lewisburg; children, Pastor Delvin D. Elwell Jr. and wife Barbara of Shady Spring, Vickie Jo Carter and husband Bill of Front Royal, Va., Becky Lee Bates and husband Rev. Jim Bates of Greer, S.C., and Rev. Dale Elwell and wife Brantlee of Ronceverte; nephew, Bobby Elwell and wife Sheila of Greenville, S.C.; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at the First Baptist Church of Hinton, with Rev. Doc Adkins and Rev. Gary Trout officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton.
