Jack Hicks

Jackie “Jack” Hicks, 67, of Greenwood, S.C., formerly of Lansing, died July 28, 2013.

Arrangements are incomplete at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville.

Carolyn Sue Nowlin Johnston

Carolyn Sue Nowlin Johnston, 58, of Page, died July 29, 2013, at CAMC - Memorial Division in Charleston.

Born May 10, 1955, in Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Burlin Allen and Marie Naylor Nowlin.

She was a nursing assistant for Kate Boone Nursing Home in Oak Hill.

Surviving: son, Steven Michael Nowlin of Page; stepson, Brian Johnston of Kincaid; stepdaughter, Angela Miller of Beards Fork; brothers, Alvin Nowlin of Concord, N.C., and Gary Nowlin of Plum Orchard; sisters, Sharon Nichols of Indiana and Dorothy Nichols of Braxton County; and eight grandchildren

Ms. Johnston was cremated. A memorial services was held July 30 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Gary Johnston officiating. There was no visitation.

Hazel Irene Kent

Hazel Irene “Cissie” Abshire Kent, 89, of Beckley, formerly of Mount Hope, died at her home July 22, 2013.

Born Oct. 26, 1923, at Mount Hope, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Mabel Perry Abshire. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Muriel Deal, and brothers, Ashby Abshire and Lewis “Tommy” Abshire.

Hazel was a retired employee of the Fayette County Board of Education as a custodian at Mount Hope Elementary School.

She was a member of the Mount Hope Christian Church and the Winolia Chapter No. 59, Order of the Eastern Star, Mount Hope.

Surviving: her son, Stephen B. Kent and his wife, Michele; grandsons, Stephen J. Kent and Logan Kent; brother, Charles “Jim” Abshire; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Nancy Martin, Della Cole and John Creed.

Graveside rites followed by burial were July 26 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, with Minister Dennis Kinzer officiating.
