James Lloyd Adkins

James Lloyd Adkins, 82, of Kincaid, died Oct. 12, 2013, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Born Aug. 20, 1931, at Kincaid, he was the son of the late Carbet Earl and Beatrice Marie Kincaid Adkins. A brother, Charles Edward Adkins, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Kincaid was a retired coal miner.

He was a rescue squad member and served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. James was a very friendly people person. He loved gardening and sharing the bounty of his harvest with family and friends and was an avid hunter.

Surviving: his wife of 61 years, Ethel L. Shaver Adkins; son, Lloyd Dewayne Adkins of Smithers, Canada; daughter, Sheila Ann Walker of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Keith Stanley and wife Terri of Kincaid, Jennifer Stanley and partner Shelly of Charleston, Brandon Adkins and wife Jamie of Kentucky and Troy Adkins of Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Kevin, Alexis, Issack, Xavier and Brook; and sisters, Phyllis Ann Ludwig and husband Lee of Peterstown and Sharon Sue Robertson and husband L.A. of Georgia.

Funeral services were Oct. 16 at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Delmas Wolfe officiating. Entombment followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post No. 3110.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Kincaid United Methodist Church, PO Box 146, Kincaid, WV 25119.

Betty Gaye Bess

Betty Gaye Bess, 75, of Kincaid, died Oct. 6, 2013.

She was born July 2, 1938, daughter of the late Frank and Goldie Brown Bench. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Estep.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a friend to many.

Surviving: her loving husband of 58 years, Donald E. Bess Sr.; daughters, Cathy L. Woods, Barbara G. Quinn, Jane A. Bess and Cynthia D. Harvey; son, Donald E. Bess Jr.; brothers, Frank Bench Jr., Paul Bench and Bob Bench; sisters, Helen White, Emma Jean Adkins, Joyce Foster, Rose Vernati and Sheila Bench; grandchildren, Benjamin Bess, Jeremy Bess, Eddie Ford, Jared Bess, Jennifer Bess and Megan Brown; and six great-grandchildren.
