Velma Loretta Waugh Newton

Velma Loretta Waugh Newton, 83, of Cedar Bluff, Va., formerly of Scarbro, died Oct. 14, 2013, at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Va.

Born in Denton, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Howard and Herma Stewart Waugh. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Newton; son, Douglas Newton; son-in-law, Douglas Scherer; and nine brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Newton was a full-time homemaker, a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving: her daughters, Martha “Starchie” Price and husband Daniel of Columbia, S.C., Pam Childers and husband Dale, and Carla Scherer, all of Pounding Mill, Va.; sisters, Grace Pittman and Yvonne Leffel, both of Oak Hill; brother, Harry Waugh of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Rhonda Wilson, Clint Hayslett, Adam Childers, Ashlea Childers, Hailey Scherer and Noah Scherer; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastors Marc Brooks and Clint Hayslett officiating. Interment will follow at the Gethsemane Gardens in Oak Hill.

Emilee Hope Osborne

Emilee Hope Osborne, 79, of Clendenin, died Oct. 14, 2013, at Oak Ridge Center in Charleston.

Hope was the daughter of the late Thomas F. Potts and Bessie Mae (Nichols) Potts Keen. She also was  preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Marvin; son, John; sisters, Melanie and Myrtle; and brothers, Noel and Tommy.

Hope was a member of Rolling Hills Methodist Church, and a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Surviving: her children, Mike Osborne and wife Lynda, James (Hoot) Osborne and wife Judy, Brenda Smith and husband Sam, Edward Osborne and Bill Osborne; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Hope’s funeral service will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Matics Funeral Home in Clendenin with Jerry Wilson officiating. A private burial will be at the Osborne Cemetery. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
