Giles Henry (Hank) Basham Jr.

Giles Henry (Hank) Basham Jr., 87, died May 24, 2010, in Panama City, Fla.

Hank, along with his wife, Grettis, was a resident of Panama City since 1955. Hank grew up and attended school in Oak Hill. He joined the military in 1943 and was assigned to the Army Air Corps, where he became an aerial gunnery instructor.

Hank married Grettis on July 23, 1943, and they were inseparable ever since. That same year, Hank was stationed in Kingman, Ariz., as a sergeant and then in 1944, was sent to the South Pacific to set up a gunnery school. He also flew combat missions in New Guinea and the Pacific Theater during World War II.

After his military service was over, Hank began his lifelong writing career. He was editor of The Fayette Tribune, then editor of a New Jersey newspaper and managing editor of a newspaper in Kentucky. His dream of moving to Florida became a reality in 1955 when he became a sports editor of The Panama City Morning News, which later joined with The Panama City News Herald.

After a year on the paper, Hank was offered a job in the public affairs office at Tyndall Air Force Base, of which he became the Director of Public Affairs from 1957 until his retirement in 1983. Hank worked closely with Panama City’s civic leaders and built a community relations program that was recognized as one of the best in the Air Force, and was instrumental in creating the more than 100-member Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee.

During his 26 years at Tyndall, he was presented two Department of the Air Force Meritorious Civilian Service Awards, the highest award that can be presented a civilian during peace-time. He published “Legend of the MAC,” a 40-year pictorial history of the Bay County Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee in 1988 to honor their achievements.

After retirement, Hank and Grettis started their own business, Basham Enterprises, a public relations, advertising and publications firm. He published a tourist magazine called Your Place in the Sun for many years. Hank also took over the Florida Lions Magazine as publisher/editor until 2004. He was a life member of the Conklin Center and received the Lion of the Year award from the Lions Club for his dedicated service to the organization.

Hank was a professional photographer and writer all of his life. Hank and Grettis traveled extensively. His photographs and travel articles appeared in many magazines. Hank’s work was recently featured in Reminisce Magazine.

Hank was an organizer of the annual Oak Hill High/Collins High Reunion Committee in Oak Hill. He and Grettis published the Reunion Log, a newspaper for the OHHS/CHS annual reunions from 1991-1999. This led Hank to publish a book called “Splinters” that recounted the memories of Oak Hill alumni from the years 1938-1943.

Hank was an active member of the Florida Lions Club, Panama City Chamber of Commerce, Jolly Rogers 90th Bomb Group Association, Ducks Unlimited and the Kentucky Colonels for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Grettis Basham; son, Robert (Bob) Gene Basham and wife Sandi; granddaughters, Sandyl Basham Byars and husband Todd and Jessica Brooke Basham; and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Basham, all of Tallahassee.
