Willavesta Eve Hurtte

Willavesta Eve Hurtte, 93, died March 17, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House after a short illness.

Born Nov. 22, 1918, in Hilltop, she was the eldest daughter of the late Walter and Pauline Patterson Sr. She also was preceded in death by brothers, David and William Patterson; sister, Nancy Patterson; and spouses, Dorsey Wood and Chauncey Hurtte.

Willavesta was a retired schoolteacher with 40 years of service, a member of the former Hilltop Baptist Church, Zeta Sorority, and a graduate of Bluefield State College.

She was an alumni of Dubois High School and served as Secretary on the Reunion Committee and has a host of other accolades and accomplishments.

Surviving: her daughter, Vera (Lamonte) Clements; brother, Walter (Gilberta) Patterson Jr.; sister, Margaret Brockett; granddaughters, Kelsia (Walter) Mattews and Montesha Hickman; great-grandchildren, Deon Clements, Deja Hickman, Mariyah Matthews, and Walter Matthews III; 11 nieces and nephews and a host of great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were March 21 at United Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Hope, with Rev. Phillip Copney Sr. and Rev. Gerry Bradford officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Roberta Marie Abercrombie Keeney

Roberta Marie Abercrombie Keeney, 66, of Oak Hill, died March 13, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Jan. 20, 1946, at Brownsville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Leon Abercrombie and Nellie Marie Genbauffe Abercrombie Cadman.

Mrs. Keeney was a special education teacher for the Fayette County Board of Education having taught at Valley, Meadow Bridge, Oak Hill and Mount Hope Elementary schools.

She attended the Summerlee Presbyterian Church where she played the piano and also attended the Oak Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving: her husband, Benjamin Franklin Keeney; daughter, Opal Jean Marie Keeney Webb and husband Cecil Dwayne of Beckley; and sisters, Alice Jean Cadman Hallberg of Hurst, Texas, Leona L. Abercrombie Harris of Washington, Pa., and Louise Agnes Abercrombie Corbett of California, Pa.

Mrs. Keeney was cremated. A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 25 at 4 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Janice Tiedeck officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home.
