Ercil Lee Barker

Ercil Lee Barker, 74, of Lansing, died on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at his home.

Born June 25, 1937, at Holtville, Calif., he was the son of the late Henry Lee and Erma Blevins Barker.

Mr. Barker was a retired electrician, having worked for the U.S. Government. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

His wife, Barbara Ann Ramey Barker, preceded him in death on June 14, 2011.

Survivors include one son, Lee Barker and wife, Penny, of Blacksburg, Va., two daughters, Beverly Crosier and husband, Jimbo, of Ansted, and Lori Woodson and husband, Mike, of Oak Hill, and one sister, Jocelyn McCallister of California.

He is also survived by three grandchildren, Seth Crosier, Erin Crosier and Noah Woodson.

Funeral services were on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Kenny Hayes and Pastor Mike Anderson officiating. Burial followed at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

William Luther Clendenin

William Luther Clendenin, 67, of Victor, died June 19, 2012, following a short illness.

He was the son of the late George Calvin Clendenin and Almeda Susan Willis Clendenin

William was of the Baptist faith. He was disabled.

Surviving: his wife, Christine Clendenin of Victor; daughters, Patricia Vance of Lewisburg, and Rosabell Steele and Jackie Chapman, both of West Virginia; sons, William Clendenin Jr. of West Virginia, and Walter Clendenin and Josh Clendenin, both of Victor; sisters, Bonnie Willis of Victor and Mary Atkinson of Ansted; brothers, Gordon Clendenin of Victor and Wallace Clendenin of Lookout; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were June 22 at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Pastor Mark Hess officiating. Burial followed in the Willis Cemetery at Victor.

Betty J. Sweeney Cook

Betty J. Sweeney Cook, 64, of Oak Hill, died June 20, 2012, following a long battle with cancer.

Born June 8, 1948, in Beckley, she was a daughter of the late William Roy Sweeney Sr. and the late Juanita Kincaid Sweeney. Betty also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Pete” Luther Cook; a son, Charles “Chuck” Cook; a brother, William “J.R.” Roy Sweeney; a sister, Connie Jean Sweeney; maternal grandparents, John and Effie Kincaid; paternal grandparents, George and Myrtle Sweeney; two nephews; and a niece.

Betty loved needle point, embroidering, birds, and gardening.

She was a member of the Kilsyth Apostolic Pentecostal Church.

Surviving: her sons, Charles Emery Cook of Oak Hill and Robert Lee Cook of Arcadia, Fla.; daughters, Connie Lyons and husband Larry and Terri Cook of Kearneysville; a grandson, Brian Lanham and his fiancée, Aimee, of Oak Hill; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Stanley Sweeney and wife Tammy of MacArthur; sisters, Sharon Sweeney of Durham, N.C., Carol Nesmith and husband Chuck of Metter, Ga., Kathy Daniel and companion Dawn of Boone, N.C., Evelyn Smith and husband Larry of Richmond Hill, Ga., and Debra Covey of Mabscott; 20 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; extended family and a host of friends.

Services were June 22 at the Kilsyth Apostolic Pentecostal Church, Mt. Hope, with Pastor Robert Ayers officiating. Following the services Betty was laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

James Donald ‘Big D’ Ervin

James Donald “Big D” Ervin, 50, of Scarbro, passed away at his home on Sunday, June 24, 2012.

He was born Nov. 7, 1961 at Oak Hill, the son of the late Clyde Austin Ervin Sr. and Barbara Ann (Brabban) Ervin.

Donnie was a local businessman and owner of the former Murdock and Ervin Starter & Alternator Shop, and the current part-owner of Allied Exterminating.

Donnie loved everything Harley Davidson, including riding his own Harley, and he enjoyed the friendships he made with his riding buddies.

Those left to cherish his memory include his brothers William Keith Ervin and his wife Terri of Oak Hill, and Clyde Austin Ervin, Jr. of Oak Hill; three aunts Brenda Ervin, Sandra Jones, and Alice K. Bennett; two uncles Everette Steele and James Murdock, Jr.; one niece Miranda Ervin; and two nephews Zack Ervin and Clyde Austin Ervin III. Donnie also leaves behind his faithful companion Henry Owen, a Jack Russell Terrier.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill, where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012 with Pastor Dorothy Osborne officiating and where the family will receive friends from noon until time of the service. Interment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Homer Nicely, Loren Cox, Mike Davis, R.C. Maynard, Mike LaRocco, Matthew Bowyer, Spencer Miller and Chris Falls.

Mary Ellen (Hutchinson) Harmon

Mary Ellen (Hutchinson) Harmon, 89, of Oak Hill, passed away on Friday, June 22, 2012, at Hidden Valley Center, Oak Hill.

Born April 22, 1923, at Cannelton, she was the daughter of Henry Ewing Hutchinson and Mary Ellen (Bowles) Hutchinson.

Mary was a homemaker and a member of the Mountain View Church of God.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Rev. Wilson Harmon; three sisters Martha Hutchinson, Eunice Hutchinson, and Violet Hutchinson Reid; and five brothers Lawrence Hutchinson, Carl Hutchinson, Clarence Hutchinson, Leonard Hutchinson, and Leroy Hutchinson.

She is survived by two nieces Janet Ward and her husband Jodie Ward of Oak Hill, and Brenda Reid of Mooresville, N.C.; six nephews Woody Hutchinson and his wife Caryn of Mooresville, N.C., David Hutchinson of Elizabethtown, Ky., Charles Hutchinson and his wife Connie of Vine Grove, Ky., Tom Hutchinson of Lynchburg, Va., Billy Hutchinson and his wife Irene of Woodsfield, Ohio, and Robert Reid and his wife Sylvia of Newport News, Va. She is also survived by several great-nephews and great-nieces.

Funeral service was held at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, on Monday, June 25, 2012, with Rev. Rudell Bloomfield officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

The family wishes to thank everyone at the Hidden Valley Center and Mary’s Garden for the great care they gave to Mary Harmon.

SFC E7 USA (retired) Clifford Lavinder Jr.

SFC E7 USA (RET) Clifford Lavinder Jr. died Oct. 31, 2011, at his residence in Huachuca City, Ariz. In accordance with his wishes, he was cremated. The immediate family invited SFC Lavinder’s classmates, friends and relatives to share in a celebration of life at a committal service for his cremains.

That service was Wednesday, June 27 in the chapel at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Graveside military honors were conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post #3110.

Those in attendance comforted SFC Lavinder’s wife, Norma Eskew Lavinder, Huachuca City; daughter, Logan (John) Wizinsky, Grand Island, Neb.; son, Wayne (Dianna) Lavinder, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; brother, Randall (Barbara) Lookenott, Mansfield, Ohio; and brother Frederick Joseph Lookenott, Springfield, Ohio, to share memories of this wonderful man who so deeply impacted so many lives.

Ann Marie Maddy Martin

Ann Marie Maddy Martin, loving wife and mother, 83, of Mount Hope, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2012.

Born April 2, 1929, at Pemberton, Ann was a daughter of the late Wilber and Ora Canaday Maddy.

Ann loved sewing, quilting and being with her family. She also enjoyed going shopping with her daughters.

In addition to her parents, Ann is preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Carl Martin; son, Carl Martin, Jr., and wife, Deb; daughters, Pamala Suhrer, Marilyn Martin and Debbie Potter and husband, John; grandchildren, Angela Martin, Joshua Hooper, Nicholas McCarty and wife, Sabrina, Jeremy Hooper, Brendan McCarty and wife, Chastity, James Hooper, Liam McCarty, Johnny Potter; many great-grandchildren, Jasmine McCarty, Taylor McCarty, Kirsten McCarty, Donna McCarty, Kaitlyn McCarty, Abigail McCarty, Malaci McCarty, Owen McCarty and Kyra Rose Lee Hooper; brothers, sisters, extended family members and beloved friends also survive.

Services were on Monday, June 25, 2012, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Richard Allen officiating. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Delores Jean ‘Jeanie’ Comer Pack

Delores Jean “Jeanie” Comer Pack, 54, of Oak Hill, died on Friday, June 22, 2012 at home.

Born Oct. 25, 1957 at  Montgomery, she was the daughter of  Lessie V. Elmore Comer of Fayetteville and the late Franklin D. Comer.

She was a homemaker.

In addition to her mother, Jeanie is survived by her husband, Keith Pack, one daughter, Amanda Williams of Fayetteville, one brother, Franklin Allen Comer and wife, Sandy, of Oak Hill, two grandchildren, Jasmin Rae Romero and Dominick Robert Romero, both of Fayetteville, and a nephew, Corey Allen Comer.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Russell Hays officiating. Burial will be at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Judy Evelyn McClung Pizzey

Judy Evelyn McClung Pizzey, of Columbia, S.C., beloved wife of Nick, died June 21, 2012, after a period of illness which she fought with fortitude and humor.

Judy was born the daughter of the late Philip and Mary Vella McClung in Spring Dale on March 18, 1950.

She graduated from Meadow Bridge High School as salutatorian in 1968 before enrolling at University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C., from which she earned both Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Education degrees.

Judy taught at Dreher High School, Columbia, where she was a highly regarded, talented and respected teacher. Judy was a person of great integrity and compassion.

Judy was much loved, highly intelligent, articulate and funny. She embraced all knowledge and particularly loved books, music, dance and the opportunity to travel and learn that living in Richmond upon Thames, England, and Singapore gave her.

She is greatly missed by her loving husband Nick, her sisters Linda and Debbie, her brothers Paul and Richard, her sister-in-law Caro, her U.S. and English families and friends worldwide.

A service to celebrate the life of Judy took place at Woodridge Memorial Park Gazebo Chapel, Lexington, S.C., on June 25.

Joann Blethen Pomeroy

Joann Blethen Pomeroy, 78, of Hilltop, died Friday, June 22, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital at Charleston, following a short illness. Born Dec. 27, 1933, at Minden, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Lee Blethen and Essie Pearl (Stotts) Blethen.

Mrs. Pomeroy spent her life being a dedicated wife and loving mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, George C. Pomeroy, of nearly 61 years and her son Patrick Lee Pomeroy and a son-in-law Gaylon Wilkins. She was also preceded in death by five brothers and seven sisters.

Survivors include four sons, Clifford Lee Pomeroy of Hilltop, George D. Pomeroy and Michael L. Pomeroy of Warren, Mich., and Elzie P. Pomeroy and his wife Jenna of Belleville, Mich.; three daughters, Christine C. Wilkins of Corryton, Tenn., Belinda J. Brumley and her husband Rod of Shelby Township, Mich., and Michelle L. Dail and her husband David of Oak Hill; and one sister Virgie (Dimple) Mahood of Yale, Mich.

Other survivors include many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family received friends at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, on Monday, June 25, 2012. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 26 at the Summerlee Wesleyan Church in Summerlee, with Pastor Tom Odom, her grandson-in-law, officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Shirley E Settle

Shirley E Settle, a native of Oak Hill, 90, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2012, at Summit Villa Care Center in his current home town of Tallmadge, Ohio.

He was born in Lansing to the late Charles and Selah Jane Atkinson Settle.

He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1943-45. He retired from Elkem Metals Plant in Alloy.

Shirley enjoyed having his family around him and had a fun-loving sense of humor that we all will miss. Gardening, fishing and hunting were among the activities he enjoyed. He also enjoyed cooking and canning and spending time with his dog, Barnie.

He was preceded in death by the mother of his children Elizabeth Dravenstott Roseblock, daughter Joyce Neidert, brothers, Julian Settle and Charles Settle, and sister Colleen Denoff. Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters Shirley Terrell (Bobby) Sullivan of Rex, Ga., Sue (Tim) Twohy of Wasilla, Ark., two sons, Wayne (Sharon) Settle of Akron, Ohio, Ronald (Dixie) Settle of Roanoke, Va.: 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Service was in the mausoleum at Montgomery Memorial Park, 9619 E Dupont Ave., London, WV 25126, on June 26, 2012, with Rev. James Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park.

The family would like to thank Summitt Villa Care Center in Tallmadge, Ohio, for the care he received.

Rachelle Eileen Brewer Skeens

Rachelle Eileen Brewer Skeens, 92, of Beckley, died June 20, 2012, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, following a long illness.

Born March 19, 1920, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Roy E. Brewer Sr. and Orva Christian Brewer. A son, Charles E. Skeens; brothers, Roy E. Brewer Jr., Glen Shelton Brewer and Sherrill Brewer; and a sister, Margaret Jane Brewer, also preceded her in death.

She was a devoted mother whose life centered around her two sons.

Mrs. Skeens retired from American Hardware in Mount Hope with 25 years’ service.

She was a member of the Mount Hope Baptist Church. Before entering the nursing home she attended the Bradley Free Will Baptist Church..

Surviving: son, James C. Skeens and wife Kitty of Covington, Va.; brothers, Cleve Brewer and wife Betty of Prosperity, and Richard Brewer and wife Hazel of Beaver; sister, Priscilla S. Vance of Seville, Ohio; grandchildren, Charles Slykerman and wife Donna of Oklahoma, James Michael Skeens and wife Lori of Hot Springs, Va., Cheryl Skeens Cropco and husband Dave of Forest, Va., and Deborah Skeens Stover and husband Danny of Sweeneysburg; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were June 23 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Pastor David Sneed officiating. Burial was at Lansing Cemetery, Lansing.
