Shelva Louise Marie Blanks

Mrs. Shelva Louise Marie Blanks, 85, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 3, 2013.

Born May 18, 1928, in Glen Jean, she was the daughter of the late Jack Leftwich and Valara M. Minnis Wilson. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, George L.S. Blanks; daughter, Phyllis M. Blanks; stepson, George Blanks Jr.; and brother, George D. Rose.

She was a housewife, mother, and member of First Baptist Church of Harlem Heights and also a graduate of Dubois High School.

Surviving: her children, George A. Blanks of Middleport, Ohio, Rev. Stanley F. Blanks of Bradley, Phillip M. Blanks of High Point, N.C., Kenneth L. Blanks of Pueblo, Colo., Shelva M. Gwinn of High Point, N.C., and Joyce A. Blanks of Harlem Heights; brothers, Daniel Wilson of Gulfport, Miss., and Raymond J. Wilson of Minden; sister, Joanne Wilson of Minden; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service was Nov. 9 at First Baptist Church of Harlem Heights, Broadway Avenue, Harlem Heights, Oak Hill, with Rev. Stanley F. Blanks officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Elizabeth A. Hall

Elizabeth A. Hall, 71, died Oct. 26, 2013.

Born in Fayetteville, she was daughter of the late Thomas Jennings and Edith Slater Radford.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Surviving: her devoted husband of 49 years, Elmer F. Hall; daughters, Christina L. Scott and Rebecca A. Christmas; brothers, Thomas J. Radford and Jerry L. Radford; grandchildren, James R. Hall, Zachary T. Scott, Anthony M. Hall, Jessica S. Hall, and Angela M. Christmas; and great-grandchildren, Ayden J. Hall and Tristan Z. Hall.  

A visitation was held Nov. 1 at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin, Jacksonville, Fla.



Shirley P. Harrah

Shirley P. Harrah, 74, of Waverly, Ohio, died Nov. 4, 2013, following open heart surgery.

Born May 14, 1939, in Ramsey, he was the son of the late Oral Lacy and Gertrude Susan Godby Harrah.

He married Bonnie M. Stewart Leetch on Dec. 19, 1987.

Surviving: his wife, Bonnie M. Stewart Leetch Harrah of Waverly; and a sister, Phyllis Hess of Fayetteville.

Funeral service was  Nov. 7 at Stonebaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Cary, Ohio.

Beulah Clintella Williams McFarland

Mrs. Beulah Clintella Williams McFarland, 88, of Summerlee, died Nov. 5, 2013.

Born Oct. 11, 1925, in Willis Branch, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Samuel W. and Julia Ann Williams Sr. She also was preceded in death by her brother, Isaac L. Williams; five sisters, Catherine Austin, Lola Wilkins, Jerlena Adams, Corrine Williams and Julia Nettles; husband, John D.; sons, John W. (Butch), Isaac L., Jeffrey, Jethro; daughter, Rhonda D.; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Summerlee, Silver Leaf Chapter #24, New River Chorus, New River Music Convention, Order of the Eastern Star, First Baptist Church Choir, Number Two District Baptist Music Convention, and West Virginia Quartet Convention.

Surviving: her children,Terry W. (Erma) McFarland Sr. of Bear, Del., William L. McFarland of St. Albans, Elder Kenneth A. (Natalie) McFarland of Madison, Ala., Forrest L. “Foxx” McFarland of Summerlee, Mary Howard of Cincinnati, Ohio, Joyce McFarland of Snellville, Ga., Jerlena McFarland of Tampa, Fla., Myra K. (Ronald) Stevens of Summerlee and Kathy (Al) Chatfield of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother, Rev. Dr. Samuel (Cleo) Williams Jr. of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sisters, Fannie Martin and Frances (Joseph) Williams, both of Buffalo, N.Y., and Jacqueline Albert of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 32 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service was Nov. 11 at First Baptist Church of Summerlee, Allman Street, Summerlee, with Rev. Dr. Samuel W. Williams Jr., Rev. William R. Stevens, Rev. Homer Jones and Rev. Lowell Williams officiating. Entombment followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Prosperity.

James Darrell McGraw

James Darrell McGraw, of Ansted, died Nov. 6, 2013, after a long battle with complications due to black lung disease.

Born Jan. 16, 1937, he was son of the late Raymond and Hazel McGraw. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Clinton “Pete” McGraw.

James was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

He was an ordained deacon at the Antioch Baptist Church. While serving there he enjoyed teaching Sunday school and assisted with the youth.

Surviving: his wife of 55 years, Patricia Skaggs McGraw; daughters, Debra McGraw Tompkins and husband Donnie, Brenda McGraw Bridges and husband Todd, and Kim McGraw Hogg and husband Gary; grandchildren, Kristie Lane Possinger, James Lane, Ray “Bud” Gray, Lesley Campbell, and Garrett Hogg; great-grandchildren, Morgan Possinger, Owen Gray Cameron, Kaeli Ann Lane, and Benjamin Burns; sisters, Carol Hankins, Joyce Keithley and Ruth Hess; and special mention to his special friend and fellow deacon, Melvin Withrow, with whom he loved to go fishing and hunting.

Viewing was Nov. 9 at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted. At his request, James will be cremated.

Mary Elizabeth Miller

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Miller, 93, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Harlem Heights, died Nov. 8, 2013.

Born Oct. 5, 1920, in Longacre, she was the daughter of the late Otis and Mary Agnes Bryant Nelson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest James Miller, on May 16, 1996; and brothers, Charles Otis Nelson on Dec. 24, 1991, and Joseph Sampson Nelson on Dec. 23, 1993.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Harlem Heights, Harlem Heights, Oak Hill.

Surviving: her daughter, Sandra Lee Bledsoe and son-in-law John Edward Bledsoe of Charlotte, N.C.; grandson, Kevin Edward Miler of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Willie B. Nelson of Harlem Heights; four great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service was Nov. 13 at the First Baptist Church of Harlem Heights, Broadway Ave., Harlem Heights, with Rev. Freddie Davenport officiating. Burial followed at Meadow Haven Memorial Park, Ingram Branch.

Wanda Burdette Robinson

Wanda Burdette Robinson, 94, of Sinks Grove, Va., formerly of Fayetteville, died Nov. 9, 2013, after a short illness.

Born Aug. 12, 1919, at Handley, she was the daughter of the late William W. and Anis Walker Burdette. Wanda also was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Robinson, in 1979; a brother, Bill; and a sister, Thelma.

Wanda was a member of the Harvey Chapel Methodist Church near Fayetteville.

Surviving: daughters, Betty Craft of Montgomery, Patricia (Jim) VanDyke of Sinks Grove, Va., and Virginia (Clinton) Treadway of Dublin, Va.; a son, Joseph (Cindy) Robinson of Winder, Ga.; a brother, Clifford of Fla.; nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial were held Nov. 11, in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Beckley with Pastor James Hylton officiating.

Frances ‘Frankie’ Suttle

Frances “Frankie” Leona Suttle, 52, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 8, 2013, at her home.

Born May 5, 1961, at Fayetteville, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Agnes Perdue Goodson. She also was preceded in death by her brother, Billy Goodson; and sister, Greathe Thompson.

Mrs. Suttle was an active member of New Beginnings Church of God where she was the teen Sunday school teacher.

She was the lead teacher at A Place to Grow Day Care.

Surviving: her devoted husband, Dennis Suttle; daughter, Alexis Suttle of Oak Hill; sisters, Carol Williams and Linda Bennett; brothers, Raymond Goodson and Herbert Goodson; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services were held Nov. 12 at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Rev. John R. Pack officiating. Burial followed at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Catherine Yvonne Wallace

Catherine Yvonne Wallace, 54, of Ashland, Ky., died Nov. 3, 2013.

Born Jan. 31, 1959, in Hempstead, N.Y., she was daughter of Rosaline Jones Canada of Oak Hill and the late James A. Walker. She also was preceded in death by her stepfather, Thomas Jefferson Canada Sr., and a brother, Bryant Hicklin.

Catherine was a sixth grade teacher at Boyd County Middle School and had received her master’s degree from Morehead State University.

She was a faithful member of Christ Temple Church, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Usher Board, a minister, and had a jail ministry. She also taught at the Ramey Home during spring, summer and fall breaks.   

Surviving: her loving husband of 34 years, Emory Wallace Jr. of Ashland, Ky.; her mother, Rosaline Jones Canada of Oak Hill; a son, Emory Wallace III (Stacy) of Ashland, Ky.; a daughter, Megan Elizabeth Wallace of Ashland, Ky.; brothers, William Walker (Gina), Kevin Walker (Carla) and Lewis Walker (Pam), all of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Patricia Walker and Rosetta Walker of Oak Hill and Felicia Walker of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Brooke, Camryn, Makenna, Ethan and Aidan; and four stepbrothers and two stepsisters.   

Homegoing services were held Nov. 9 at Christ Temple Church with Minister J.D. Crockrel officiating, with burial following in Rose Hill Burial Park.
