Clara Faye Wilson Allport

Clara Faye Wilson Allport, 69, of Lookout, died Jan. 12, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following a long battle with cancer.

Born June 27, 1940, at Victor, she was the daughter of the late Grover and Alta Fox Wilson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Billy S. Allport; daughter, Thelma Lou Allport; and brothers, Delmar Wilson, Charles Wilson, and Otis Melvin Wilson.

Mrs. Allport was a member of Lansing Baptist Church and a devoted mother and grandmother.

Surviving: daughters, Cathy Mangini of New Castle, Del., Candy Workman, Christy Hunt, and Rebecca Allport, all of Fayetteville, and Elizabeth Allport Campbell of Scarbro; sons, Steven Michael Allport and Billy Wade Allport, both of Edmond; brothers, Ronald Orie Wilson, Herbert Wilson, Marshal Wilson, and Grover Wilson; sisters, Mary Cox, Dellmae Stuahldreher, Emily McGlott, Olamarie Halsted, Wilma King, and Lena White; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Jan. 15 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Mary Ann Burgess

Mary Ann Burgess, 51, of Mt. Hope, died Jan. 17, 2010, at her residence.

Born Dec. 1, 1958, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Garnet Bailey Bennett. She also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Crystal Flint, and an infant sister, Alice Bennett.

Mary was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving: her husband, Victor Burgess; her daughter, Donna Spring Young and husband John of Beckley; grandson, Patrick Young of Beckley; stepdaughters, Jamie Anderson of Texas and Caitlin Wilcox of Mullens; brother, Wayne Bennett and wife Cathy of Prosperity; aunt, Norma McKinney of Hinton; uncle, Richard Bailey of Newark, Del.; and numerous cousins, including Bonnie Ward of Mullens.

Services were Jan. 20 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Rick Metrick officiating.

Alma Jennings Massie Eder

Alma Jennings Massie Eder, 92, of Sun, died Jan. 14, 2010, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born April 9, 1917, at Stuarts Draft, Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Emma Fitzgerald Massie. Her husband, George Eder Sr.; daughter-in-law, Ruth Shaver Eder; and siblings, Charlie Massie, James Massie, Clyde Massie, Carl Massie, Ollie Dilley and Edith Massie, also preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker.

Alma was a faithful, longtime member of the Jones Avenue First Church of God where she had been active in the Women of the Church of God and the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group and taught children’s Sunday school and Vacation Bible School.

Surviving: daughters, Betty Hale and husband Roscoe of Huntington, and Bonnie Lucas and husband George of Niceville, Fla.; sons, George “Sonny” Eder Jr. and wife Ruth of Fayetteville, and Bobbie Eder of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Gregory Hale and wife Verna of Florida, Jeffrey Hale and wife Tammy of Cross Lanes, Seanda Filek of Florida, Travis Lucas of Florida, Pamela Steel of Oregon, Bradley McClung and wife Terri of Nevada, Anita McClung of Fayetteville, Lisa Arthur of Beckley, Kerinda Nobles and husband Jack of Scarbro, David Duvall, currently serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq, and his wife, Brenda, Jeannie White of Virginia, Kimberly Imburgia of Virginia and Nancy Barley of Maple Fork; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Victoria and Jameson Hale, all of Florida, Madison McGraw and Mason Hale of Cross Lanes, Samantha Lucas, Jasmine Anderson, Joseph, Andrew and Benjamin Filek, all of Florida, Christopher McClung of Fayetteville, Rachel McClung, Matthew Steele and Taryn Harris, all of Texas, Kathryn McClung of Colorado, Ashley Steele of Idaho, Bethany Duvall of Arizona, Courtney Lemons of Lewisburg, Desseria Duvall, Earrie Imburgia and Zane Brizzi, all of Virginia, and Aaron Barley and Sidney Barley, both of Maple Fork; and great-great-grandchildren, Zane and Owen Mallory of Oregon, Hadley Nunley of Idaho, and Heyden and Ethan Lemons of Lewisburg.

Services were Jan. 18 at the Jones Avenue First Church of God in Oak Hill with Rev. Ralph Shupe officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Freddie Dean Gray

Mr. Freddie Dean Gray, 63, of Mount Hope, died Jan. 13, 2010, in Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.

Born Sept. 28, 1946, in Turkey Knob, he was the son of the late William and Louise Johnson Gray. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Merritt; and brothers, William, Robert, Eugene, John and Lee Phillip.

Surviving: sister, Patricia (Sherman) Beasley; brother, Richard of Mount Hope; sons, Freddie Jr. of Huntington, Cedric of Philadelphia, and Mark Swain of Beckley; eight grandchildren; aunts, Catherine and Margaret Gray of Mount Hope; many other nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were Jan. 19 at The Glorious Church of God in Christ, Mount Hope. Interment was in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.



Joseph M. (Steve) Hanshew

Joseph M. (Steve) Hanshew, 69, of Lawn, died Jan. 17, 2010, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 1, 1940, in Rainelle, he was the son of the late Leslie M. and Dorothy Sevy Hanshew. He also was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Pamela, and his brother, Johnny Hanshew.

Steve was a disabled coal miner from the Royal Coal Company and Fayette Mining Company. He was a 4-H leader for 25 years in Fayette County, a member of the Smoot Ruritan Club, a member of the Meadow Grove Baptist Church, and a 1969 graduate of Meadow Bridge High School.

He shared his gift of music playing and singing with the Shady Oaks Band.

Surviving: his wife and best friend, Carolyn (Tommy) Forren Hanshew; his children, Donna (Paul) Boggs of Crawley, Sandi (Steve) Neal of Chantilly, Va., Angie (Larry) Owen of Suffolk, Va., Jody (Greg) Crist of Hico and Matthew (JoClare Fletcher) Hanshew of Ansted; his grandchildren, Paul (Ricky) Boggs III (Kristin), Brittany Boggs, Melanie and Matthew Neal, Andrew, Katie, Eryn, and Emily Owen, Sidney and Sammy Crist and Nathan and Nicholas Hanshew; siblings, Polly Simms of Russellville, Phyllis (Nick) Jones of Lookout, Patty (Jack) Spade of Rainelle, Peggy Knight and Herma (Bob) Johnson, all of Hurricane, Leslie (Gardenia) Hanshew of Pensacola, Fla., Hilbert (Juanita) Hanshew of Danese, and Donald (Linda) Hanshew of Radford, Va.

Services were Jan. 20 at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Les Mullins officiating. Burial followed in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.

Ronald Lee Harris

Ronald Lee Harris, 38, of Prince, died Jan. 11, 2010, following a short illness.

Mr. Harris’ request was that his body be cremated after visitation was held at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted.

Carolyn W. Hedrick

Carolyn W. Hedrick, 72, of Charlottesville, Va., and formerly of Fayetteville, died Jan. 12, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, after a long illness.

Born Feb. 20, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Marjorie Warren.

Surviving: her husband, Homer H. Hedrick Jr., of Charlottesville, Va.; her children, Charles W. “Chuck” Blake of Fayetteville, Susan K. Blake of Charlottesville, Va., and Carolyn J. “Janie” Barger (Jack) of Rimersburg, Pa.; the children of Charles H. Blake, her grandchildren, James Gregory “Greg” Blake of Charlottesville, Va., and Kaylah H. Blake of Rimersburg, Pa.; and her brother, Robert L. Warren (Joyce) of Las Vegas, Nevada.

At Carolyn’s direction, her body was donated to the Virginia State Anatomical Program. There will be no funeral.

Elsie H. Jeffries

Elsie H. Jeffries, 77, of Fayetteville, died Jan. 12, 2010, at Fayette Continuous Care.

Born April 10, 1932, at Winding Gulf, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Miller and Florence Meadows. Elsie also was preceded in death by brothers, Millard, Boyd, Bill, Estelle, and Clancy Thompson; and sisters, Ida Cole and Mettie Walker.

Surviving: her husband, Jim Jeffries of Fayetteville; her children, Rose O’Dell and husband Darrell of Victor, Tommy Jeffries of Fayetteville, Alice Higginbotham and husband Bill of Oak Hill, Steve Jeffries and wife Linda, and Jackie Jeffries and wife Christine, all of Fayetteville; brothers, Cleve Miller and wife Johnsie of North Carolina and David Thompson of Coal City; sister, Effie Edwards and husband Paul of North Carolina; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Rosalee Lively

Rosalee Lively, 81, of Brookpark, Ohio, died Jan. 10, 2010, in Middleburg Heights, Ohio.

Born Aug. 29, 1928, in Pax, she was the daughter of the late Charley James and Rosa Zetta (nee Adkins) Bailey. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William Lively; son, Robert Bailey; sister, Martha Jane Craddock; and brothers, Junior, Jack, Dennis, Billy Jo, and Bob Bailey.

Mrs. Lively was a stock person at K-Mart. She enjoyed gardening and working in the yard, loved flowers and her rose bushes, loved animals, collected angel figurines, and cherished spending time with her beloved family and friends.

Surviving: her grandchildren, Robyn (Steve) Lukas and Robert Bailey; and daughter-in-law, Carol Bailey.

Graveside services were Jan. 14 at Pax Community Cemetery.

Rebecca Yolanda Taraczkozy Seletyn

Rebecca Yolanda Taraczkozy Seletyn, 62, of Carlisle, died Jan. 13, 2010, at CAMC-Memorial Division in Charleston.

Born July 1, 1947, at Glen Rogers, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Pauline Herron Taraczkozy.

She was a licensed practical nurse for Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.

Mrs. Seletyn was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill where she was a member of the Ladies Guild.

She was founder and Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 1335 of Oak Hill.

Surviving: her husband, James Paul Seletyn; daughter, Michelle Rodriquez of New York, N.Y.; stepson, James Scott Seletyn of Columbus, Ohio; stepdaughter, Donna Rae Watson of Piedmont, Ohio; siblings, David Taraczkozy and Debbie Harrison, both of Eccles, Bobby Joe Taraczkozy of Green Acres, Fla., Bill Taraczkozy of Beckley and Tammy Calvert of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Alex Seletyn of Carlisle, Amanda Abbott of New York, N.Y., and Ryan Paul Seletyn of Wadsworth, Ohio; and her dog, Max.

Mass of Christian burial was Jan. 16 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Arthur Estel Sevy

Arthur Estel Sevy, 77, of Rainelle , died Jan. 13, 2010, at his home following a short illness.

Born Sept. 14, 1932, in Corliss, he was the son of the late Otha Ervin and Marie Harris Sevy. He also was preceded in death by a son, Ralph (Bucky) Hypes, and brothers, John Sevy and Dillard Sevy.

Arthur had worked for the Division of Highways and as a school bus driver for the State of West Virginia.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Minnie Belle Baptist Church of Corliss.

Surviving: his wife, Audrey Sevy of Corliss; daughters, Debra McKain of Navarre, Fla., Cynthia Henline and husband John of Pensacola, Fla., and Pamela Harding and husband Roy of Corliss; sons, Ronald Hypes and wife Fran of Raleigh, N.C., and Richard Hypes and wife Paula of Powhatan, Va.; sisters, Ethel Hiser of Craigsville and Bertie Jamison and husband Harry of Bangor, Maine; brother, Ralph Sevy and wife Nellie of Lookout; grandchildren, Jason McKain, Benjamin Harding, Tony Harding, Randy Hypes, Ryan Hypes, Angie Garver, Terry Mason and Christine Palmer; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were Jan. 18 at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle with Pastor Gene Bennett officiating. Burial followed at the Bethel Cemetery in Corliss.

Robert Jennings Toney

Robert Jennings Toney, 55, of Pax, died Jan. 14, 2010.

Born April 11, 1954, in Beckley, he was the son of Wanda Tyree Toney and the late Nathan Hale Toney. In addition to his father, his grandparents, Ray and Lillian Tyree, whom he loved very much, and his brother, James “Jimmy” Nathan Toney, also preceded him in death.

Last Tuesday, he asked his wife Vickie to convey these thoughts to everyone: Keep laughing and be happy because life is too short. Life is for the living. Anyone who knew Rob knows he lived by those words.

Rob was a truck driver for 30+ years and was owner/operator of Toney Trucking. When he was home he could be found — or not found, as the case often was — riding around on his Harley.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: his wife, Vickie Kelly Toney; sons, Scott Bolen and companion Amy Neal of Fayetteville, and David Anderson “DJ” Jones II of Pax; a very special granddaughter, Delanie Jo Bolen of Peterstown; sister, Lucy Toney Werneke and husband Glen of San Diego, Calif.; father- and mother-in-law, Larry and Phyllis Kelly of Pax; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A celebration of his life was held Jan. 20 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. Ronnie “Doc” Stapleton officiating. Burial was at Pax Community Cemetery.

Erma L. Urbas

Erma L. Urbas, 82, of Craigsville, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, in the West Virginia University Hospital at Morgantown.

Born Jan. 16, 1928, at Richwood, she was a daughter of the late John Paul and Margherita Chamberlando Belviso.

She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church at Persinger and was a member of the church choir. She loves her Lord Jesus.

Surviving: her husband of 62 years, Frank Urbas; daughters, Patricia (Larry) Metheney of Craigsville, Linda (Tom) Patrick of Morgantown, Peggy Gregory of Summersville, Rosemary Legg of Oak Hill, and Terri (John) Blake of Charleston; sister, Nelda Jackson of Franklin, Va.; grandchildren, Johnny (Karen) Legg, Nikki (Mike) Swiger, Scott Gregory, Emily Blake, and Zach Blake; and great-grandchildren, Justin and Wesley Legg.

Funeral services were Jan. 20 in the Grace Baptist Church at Persinger with Pastor John Kidwell officiating. Entombment followed in the WV Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Calvin.

Donald Wayne Withrow

Donald Wayne Withrow, 76, of Ansted, died Jan. 14, 2010, following an extended illness.

A graveside service was held Jan. 19 at the family cemetery in Sugar Creek with Pastor Danny Legg officiating.

Rebecca ‘Becky’ Thomas Workman

Rebecca Lynn “Becky” Thomas Workman, 36, of Gatewood, died Jan. 10, 2010, at home in Beckwith.

Born Aug. 10, 1973, at Montgomery, she was the daughter of James K. and Dreama Greer Thomas of Gatewood.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Jasper and Alfretta Greer; and paternal grandparents, Rupert and Shelma Thomas.

Mrs. Workman attended the Church of God at Gatewood. She was a former student of Fayetteville High School, a dietary manager, and was formerly employed by Fayette Continuous Care in Fayetteville.

Surviving: her husband, John Robert Workman Jr. of Lansing; daughter, Gabrielle Nicole Zimmerman, at home; son, Michael Shane Zimmerman Jr., at home; stepsons, James Workman, Casey Workman, and Isaac Workman, all at home; sister, Jeannette Thomas and companion Ronald Long of Fayetteville; nephew, Tobias Long; mother-in-law and step-father-in-law, Tresea and Jeremiah Gibson of Stuarts Draft, Va.; father-in-law, John R. Workman Sr. of Lansing; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services were Jan. 15 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Rev. Morris Nutter and Brother Ingram officiating. Burial followed in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.
