Darrell A. ‘Chappy’ Chapman

Darrell A. “Chappy” Chapman, 76, of Edison, Ohio, died June 17, 2010, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus after a lengthy battle with emphysema.

Born Oct. 4, 1933, in Hico, he was the son of the late Frank K. and Annie E. (Hicks) Chapman. He also was preceded in death by his grandson, Richard Scott Boles; brothers, James and Bacil; and a sister, Theresa.

Darrell grew up in Hico. His loyalty to his country led him to leave school early and enlist in the United States Marine Corps. He served three years during the Korean War.

After his honorable discharge, he returned to Hico where he married Rheba “Joy” Childers on Jan. 2, 1954. Shortly thereafter they moved to Marion where they resided for 40 years until moving to Edison where he realized his dream of building his farm and raising his Sulky horses.

Darrell worked for 20 years for Tecumseh where he retired the day they closed their doors in the 1980s. His full-time employment with Tecumseh was a side job to fund his true loves — raising and racing horses and working on cars. Darrell always owned a business and people would come from Marion and Morrow counties to have Chappy work on their cars or trucks. A mechanic all his life, his daughter said, “There wasn’t anything he couldn’t build, rebuild, tear out, and repair.” In regard to horses, he told his wife he was most happy when he was raising his Sulky horses.

For the past seven years, he and his brother Charles owned and operated Chappy Brothers Hydraulics on North Main Street in Marion.

Darrell was a man of nature and could spend hours roaming through the woods in search of ginseng root. He also enjoyed playing poker with his buddies in Edison.

He was a member of the Columbus Trotter Association and the Masonic Lodge in rural Marion.

Darrell will be remembered as a man with an unbreakable spirit; a strong man, always able to see the humor in any situation. While only 5’4” his family described him as a gentle giant and strong as an ox. He was a natural born leader whose presence commanded respect.

Surviving, in addition to his wife: his daughters, Debra A. Boles and Rhonda Dickerson and her husband, David, all of the family farm in Edison; grandchildren, Edward Dickerson, Christopher Dickerson and his wife, Jenna, and Nichole Dickerson; a great-grandson, Colton Dickerson; and siblings, Lucy and Tom Pondek of Severna Park, Md., Jack Chapman of Marion, Ohio, Donald and Alice Chapman of Ansted, Charles and Patty Chapman of Marion, Ohio, Betty Chapman, Nancy and Dick Boothe, and Sharon and Mike Truslow, all of Verona, Va., and Joan and Tommy Tanner of Hico.

Funeral services were June 22 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted with Pastor Jerry E. Bush Sr. officiating. Entombment followed at the Chapel of Rest Mausoleum, Victor.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the American Lung Association.
