Sally Quarrie Cales

Sally Quarrie Cales, 70, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 12, 2012, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, following a long battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 26, 1941, at Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Eunice Irene Plummer Quarrie and stepdaughter of the late Supok Kim Quarrie.

She was retired from the WV Department of Health and Human Resources.

Mrs. Cales was a member of the Oak Hill Alliance Church and TOPS #WV341 in Oak Hill.

Surviving: her husband, Julius Allen “Buddy” Cales; daughters, Jane Kimberely Given and husband Johnny Lee, and Denise Nichole Kelly and husband Robert Andrew Kelly, all of Oak Hill; sister, Kimberley Scafide and husband Santos of Elmhurst, Ill.; and a grandson, Joshua Cory Given of Oak Hill.

Mrs. Cales was cremated. A memorial service was held Jan. 15 at the Oak Hill Alliance Church with Pastor Albert Bowman officiating.

Joe Carr Jr.

Joe Carr Jr., 77, of Fayetteville, died Jan. 12, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, after a long illness.

Born March 23, 1934, he was the son of the late Joe and Beulah Carr. He also was preceded in death by his sons, David Carr and Roger Tim Carr.

He was retired from Valley Camp Coal Co. where he was a mine superintendent.

Surviving: his wife of 59 years Letha Carr; brother, Jim Carr of North Carolina; sister, Dorothy DeJohn of Florida; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Carr.

Services were Jan. 13 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Rev. Scotty Elswick officiating. Burial followed in Memory Gardens, Madison.

Willia Farley Deeds

Willia Farley Deeds, 86, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 13, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, following a long illness.

Born May 21, 1925, at Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Prince and Orie Lake Farley of Nimitz. Her husband, Robert Lee Deeds, also preceded her in death, as did her sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Howard Via.

She was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church. In her more active years she enjoyed cooking, decorating, sewing and travel.

Willia was employed by Lilly’s Crown Jewelers as a diamond consultant and salesperson for many years. She cheerfully enjoyed her vocation.

Willia was a wonderful wife, and a loving mother and grandmother.

Surviving: her daughter, JoAnn Stevenson of Oak Hill; granddaughter, Deana Lynn Bennett and her husband, Charles Romeo, of Oak Hill; brother, Jack O. Farley of Ohio; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Willia was especially fond of her nephew, Mathew Farley, who was always the first to extend prayer with her.

Private funeral services were held Jan. 16 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Ken Souder officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Flora M. Holliday

Flora M. Holliday, 89, of Mount Hope, formerly of Powellton, died Jan. 13, 2012, at Clarks Christian Care of East Bank.

Born March 12, 1922, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Talmage and Ida Cane Tucker.

Surviving: son, Raymond McElroy and his wife, Rose, of Kimberly; nieces she raised, Rochella Eyler of Powhaton, Va., and Irene Pittman of Lavernia, Texas; granddaughters, Teresa Johnson of West Columbia, and Debra Lopetrone of Dixie; great-grandchildren, Kristin and Cody Johnson and Ethan and Emmie Lopetrone; several nieces and nephews; and sisters, Helen Kiser of Nitro and Bertha Lowe of Boomer.

Service was Jan. 16 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Angeline L. Miaso

Angeline L. Miaso, 93, of Gladstone, Mich., died peacefully Jan. 10, 2012, at the Bishop Noa Home, in Escanaba, with her loving husband John at her side.

Angeline was born Aug. 8, 1918, in Oak Hill, the daughter of the late John and Agnes (Liska) Zelek. Angeline also was preceded in death by her brother, John Zelek; and sister, Helen Beiner.

She was raised in Oak Hill where she attended the Oak Hill schools.

On Oct. 8, 1947, Angeline was united in marriage to John Miaso, at St. Casimir Church, and together the couple made their home and raised their family in Chicago.

Angeline was employed for many years at Western Electric.

Angeline loved to spend time with her family. She enjoyed having phone conversations with her many sisters, baking, traveling and listening to Polish music. She will be dearly missed.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 64 years, John: son, Ronald (Jacqueline) Miaso of Perkins, Mich.; daughter, Donna (Paul) Cavallaro of Itasca, Ill.; sisters, Bertha Barnett of Huntington, Agnes Griges of Battlecreek, Mich., Stella Grablick of Lincoln Park, Mich., and Cam Zelek of Oak Hill, and Jenny (Stanley) Frayer, both of Oak Hill; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mass of Christian burial services were Jan. 13 at the All Saints Church with Rev. Fr. Ronald Timock officiating. Luncheon followed in the All Saints Parish Hall. Angeline was laid to rest in the Fernwood Cemetery in the Spring.

Drema Elinor Myers

Drema Elinor Myers, 92, formerly of Charleston, died Jan. 8, 2012, in a Longwood, Fla., care home.

Born in Long Branch, she graduated from Mount Hope High School.

Until her retirement in 2000, she was employed for 54 years by the Kay Casto Chaney law firm in Charleston.

She was the organist at the First Christian Church in Charleston for over 52 years, and served as an officer for many years in the local chapter of the American Guild of Organists.  

Surviving: her sister-in-law, Marjorie (Wayne) Myers; nieces, Marsha (Mark) Elliott of Woodstock, Ga., and Barbara Myers of Longwood, Fla.; six great-nieces and nephews, and several cousins in the southern West Virginia region.

Funeral service was Jan. 14 at Harding Funerals & Cremations Chapel. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Myrtle J. ‘Shine’ Rose

Myrtle J. “Shine” Rose, 85, of Fayetteville, died Jan. 10, 2012, at Plateau Medical Center.

Born Nov.30, 1926, at Giatto, she was the daughter of the late Noah Siner and Clara Bennett Siner. Myrtle also was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Rose, in 1986, and by brothers, Bo and John, and sisters, Geraldine and Freda.

Myrtle was a homemaker, was of the Baptist faith and was known for playing her guitar and singing songs.

Surviving: her son, Artie Rose and wife Kathy of Virginia Beach; daughter, Connie Piner and husband Dan of North Carolina; sister, Ellen Jackson of Gobles, Mich.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was Jan. 14 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Pastor Ron George officiating. Entombment followed in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Thelma Mae Smith

Thelma Mae Smith, 82, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 15, 2012, at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Oak Hill.

Born Oct. 15, 1929, at Mossy, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson “Jack” and Roxie Lettie Likens Smith. A brother, Cecil J. Smith, also preceded her in death.

Surviving: sister, Letha Vass of Oak Hill; and several cousins.

Committal service was Jan. 18 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Lum Toney officiating. Burial was at Coleman Cemetery at Toney Fork.
