Roger Lynn Baxter

Roger Lynn Baxter, 46, of Pax, died Nov. 15, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born July 10, 1966, at Petersburg, Va., he was the son of Loraine Wriston Baxter of Pax, and the late Leonard Edward Baxter. His paternal grandparents, Lula and Raymond Baxter, and maternal grandparents, Clara and Albert Wriston, also preceded him in death.

He was a heavy equipment operator.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: his wife, Georgetta Kay Walker Baxter; sister, Venesa Addington and husband David of Pax; brothers, Teddy Baxter and wife Ellie of Scarbro, and Charles Baxter of Staunton, Va.; five nephews and two nieces.

Funeral services were Nov. 18, at Willis Branch Community Church, with Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating. Burial was at Pax Community Cemetery.

Dollie Dove Dick

Dollie Dove Dick, 86, of Scarbro, died Nov. 15, 2012, at Ansted Center, Ansted.

Dollie’s funeral service was held Nov. 19, at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Pastor Robert Morey officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Elbert ‘Chub’ Gillum

Elbert “Chub” Gillum, 87, of Fayetteville, died Nov. 18, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born Jan. 23, 1925, at Rush, Ky., he was the son of the late George and Anna Gillum.

Chub was a retired employee for the Town of Fayetteville.

Surviving: his brother, George Gillum and wife Billie Jean; nieces, Dreama Stover and Kathryn Turner; great-niece, Kathy Comer and her children; great-niece, Patricia Stover and her child; great-nephew, Kevin Stover; great-niece, Beth Boysworth and her child; great-nephew, Ricky Turner and his children; and great-niece, Angie Brown and her child.

Funeral services were Nov. 21, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Russell Hays officiating. Burial followed at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

James Franklin Griffey, 56, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 17, 2012, in Oak Hxill.

Verta Lou Jones Pomeroy

Verta Lou Jones Pomeroy, 86, of Meadow Bridge, died Nov. 17, 2012, at Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home following a long illness.

Born June 25, 1926, in Springdale, she was the daughter of the late Beury and Lula Hunter Jones. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer L. Pomeroy Jr.; a son, Darrell Wayne Pomeroy; and brothers, Thelmar, Harry, Grover and Calvin Jones.

Verta was a homemaker and a member of Beelick Knob Tabernacle Church of Meadow Bridge.

Surviving: daughter-in-law, Carol Pomeroy of Meadow Bridge; a sister, Edna Morris of Meadow Bridge; grandsons, Michael Wayne Pomeroy and wife Patty and Rodney Dean Pomeroy; great-grandchildren, Felicia, Dillon, and Madison; and eight nieces and seven nephews.

Services were Nov. 21 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Rev. Sherman McCombs officiating. Burial followed at the End of the Trail Cemetery in Clintonville.

Dennis James Taylor

Dennis James Taylor, 59, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 14, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born June 6, 1953, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Alfred Raymond and Anna Margaret Smith Taylor. A brother, Gene Pearlie Taylor, and sisters, JoAnn Scarbrough and Shirley Milam, also preceded him in death.

He was a disabled auto mechanic.

Surviving: daughters, Ashley Shepard and husband Brandon of Oak Hill, and Sarah Adkins and husband Curtis of Scarbro; sister, Frances “Frankie” Rose of Hilltop; grandchildren, C.J., Luke, and Whitney Adkins, all of Scarbro, and Taylor and Braydon Shepard, both of Oak Hill; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Nov. 17, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Rev. Melvin Adkins officiating. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

John Taylor Vernon Sr.

John Taylor Vernon Sr., 87, of Fayetteville, died Nov. 17, 2012, at Hidden Valley Health Care Center, Oak Hill, following a short illness.

Born Nov. 6, 1925, in Charleston, he was the son of the late William Joseph and Victoria Taylor Vernon. He also was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mildred Selvey Vernon; sisters, Mildred, Christine, Virginia, Victoria and Laura; and a brother, Joseph.

Mr. Vernon was a member of Fayetteville Presbyterian Church.

He served in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II (1943-1945).

Mr. Vernon worked for Union Carbide and retired from Elkem Metals.
