Pauletta Lynn Bailey Bess

Pauletta Lynn Bailey Bess, 63, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 25, 2012, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Oct. 29, 1949, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Harold D. and Christelle Laverne Slemp Bailey.

Pauletta was a homemaker.

She was a 1967 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill.

Surviving: her husband, Dennis Edward Bess; sons, Christopher Via of Oak Hill, Kevin A. Bess of Oak Hill, and Craig Bess and wife Nikie of Shady Spring; a sister, Phyllis Wallace of Newport News, Va.; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Pastor Delmas Wolfe officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Lawrence Marvin ‘Larry’ Beverley Sr.

Lawrence Marvin “Larry” Beverley, Sr., 77, of Mount Hope, died Nov. 21, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born Sept. 14, 1935, at Kilsyth, he was the son of the late Marvin Hubert and Myrl Inez Turner Beverley. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Beverley Smith.

He was a retired school bus driver from the Fayette County Board of Education after 34 years of service. He was also a retired Mount Hope businessman, being associated with his father at Beverley and Beverley Grocery and owning Larry’s Bargain Box.

Larry was a faithful member of Mount Hope Christian Church. He was a former city councilman in Mount Hope and served for a short time on the Mount Hope Housing Authority. He was a member of the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees.

At one time he served as co-chairman of the Boy Scouts in Mount Hope; was a former member and Vice President of the Mount Hope Lions Club; and a member of the National Rifle Association.

Surviving: his wife, Patricia Ann “Pat” Haley Beverley; son, Lawrence Marvin Beverley Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Patti Beverley Barton and her husband, Dan, of Fayetteville; niece, Beverly Jean Smith Moye of Ona; great-nephew, Hunter Shockey of Ona; a brother-in-law, Jack Smith of Hico; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Haley of Hinton.

Funeral services were Nov. 26, at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Minister Dennis Kinzer and Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Entombment followed at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Margaret Robertson Bowyer

Margaret Robertson Bowyer, 73, of Augusta, Ga., formerly of Glen White, died Nov. 18, 2012.

Martha June Collier

Martha June Collier, 78, a resident of South Charleston for over 50 years, died Nov. 21, 2012, at home after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Marie Billups; and a brother, Keith Phillips.

She was a graduate of Pax High School where she was valedictorian and a graduate of WV State College.

Martha was a 30-year member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was a member of the Pax Church of God, Pax.

She was a retired Kanawha County School teacher with 30 years of service, having served 28 years at Tyler Elementary School.

Martha enjoyed her grandchildren, traveling and helping others.

Surviving: son, Steven N. Collier of South Charleston; daughter, Debra J. Bertus of Parkersburg; sisters, Faye Tyree of Prosperity, and Linda Robertson of Stone Mt., Ga.; 5 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Service was Nov. 26 at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, with Pastor Barbara Dunbar officiating. Entombment was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Pamela Sue Dillon

Pamela Sue Dillon died Nov. 15, 2012, following a long illness with her family and two close friends by her side.

Pamela was born in Illinois on Feb. 22, 1960. Her paternal grandparents, Mark and Lilly Newhouse; maternal grandparents, Blair and Georgia Dillon; several aunts and uncles and three very special people in her life, Mamie Casey, Wilford Adkins and Gary Fannin all preceded her in death, as did her biological parents, Wallace Jack and Vona Louise Newhouse Dillon.

She had been sick for a long time and could no longer do the things she loved, things like raising her garden, working in her flowers and cooking. She also loved taking care of her two dogs, Courtney and Katie.

As a fan of country and gospel music she played CDs quite a lot which gave her a great deal of peace.

Surviving: her loving mother, Carol Adkins of Cirtsville, who was by her side throughout; brothers, Christopher Adkins of Cirtsville and John Mullens of Cirtsville; sister, Debbie Holmes of Oak Hill; a nephew, C.J. Bowyer of Oak Hill; an aunt whom she loved very much, Carolyn Newhouse of Kincaid; an uncle, John Dillon of Page as well as Russell and Debbie Walker of Kincaid, Jenny and Gary Taylor of Kincaid, Thomas Dillon of Kincaid, Russell Walker Jr. and wife Stephanie and their girls of Kincaid and two little nephews, Andrew and Hunter of Kincaid.

Funeral services were Nov. 24, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Ken Souder officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Sandra Renee Forren Foley, 46, of Meadow Bridge, died Nov. 19, 2012.

Services were Nov. 23, at Smathers Funeral Chapel.

James Franklin ‘Jim’ Griffey

James Franklin “Jim” Griffey, 56, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 16, 2012, at Oak Hill.

Born Oct. 22, 1956, at Gatewood, he was the son of the late Frank and Jessie Rhodes Tincher Griffey.

He was a disabled laborer for the steel building industry.

Surviving: daughters, Ronni Ruff of Oak Hill and Stephanie Griffey of Gastonia, N.C.; special friend, Phyllis Bibb of Oak Hill; brothers, Wesley Tincher of Fayetteville, and Wayne Griffey of Naoma; sisters, Lois Thompson of Oak Hill, Bonnie Prather of Charleston and Joan Johns of Catharpin, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Griffey was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

James Alan Grimmett

James Alan Grimmett, 53, of Ansted, died Nov. 22, 2012.

In honor of his wishes, he has been cremated. There will be no services.

Pamela Gaye Clay Morris

Pamela Gaye Clay Morris, 58, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 18, 2012, at her home.

Born July 26, 1954, at Pax, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Nora Ann Ratliff Clay. A daughter, Michelle Lynn; brothers, James Clay and Johnny Ratliff; and a sister, Dreama Haggerty, also preceded her in death, as did her adoptive parents, Robert and Myrtle Ratliff.

She a former cook/waitress for Tom’s of Oak Hill.

Surviving: her husband, Charles R. Morris; children, Robert Owens, Ronnie Owens, Sidney Owens, Michael Morris, Charles Rene Morris and Cici Morris; stepson, Cecil Gilliam; sisters, Ida Lively and Shirley Payne; brother, Albert Ratliff; grandchildren, Brandy, Dean, Ronnie and Caloeb; great-granddaughter, Emma Mae; nephew, Ronnie; and niece, Lisa.

In keeping with her wishes, Pamela was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Ann Neff Nichols

Elizabeth “Libby” Ann Neff Nichols, 53, wife of Greg Nichols, died Nov. 25, 2012, at her residence in Verona, Va., after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on March 20, 1959, a daughter of James Donald and Mary Ellen (Huffman) Neff of Fayetteville. She also was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Nichols.

Surviving, in addition to her husband: daughter, Andrea Nichols of Verona; a brother, James Donald Neff Jr. of Verona; and a sister, Sarah Jane Campbell and her husband, Arthur, of Fayetteville.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, t Staunton First Church of God by Pastor Donald D. Simmons and Rev. Sylvia B. McDorman. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Staunton First Church of God Landscaping Fund, 1850 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton, VA  24401.

Robert Eugene Puckett

Robert Eugene Puckett, 65, of Buffalo, died Nov. 25, 2012, at Adena Medical Center, Chillicothe, Ohio.

Born June 9, 1947, at Lansing, he was the son of the late John and Thelma Kincaid Puckett.

Surviving: his siblings, John Puckett of Lansing, Delma Bailes of Palm Bay, Fla., Anna Belle Hodge of Lansing, Erma Shannon of Buffalo, Barbara Marty of Victor and Linda Arbaugh of Beckley.

Dexter Phillip Scarbrough

Dexter Phillip Scarbrough, 59, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 25, 2012, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Beckley.

Born June 4, 1953, at Oak Hill, he was the son of Ivora Rhodes Scarbrough of Oak Hill, and the late Elmer Ray Scarbrough.

He was a disabled iron worker.

Mr. Scarbrough was a member of the Sun Full Gospel Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: his wife of six years, Martha Riley Scarbrough; son, Max Scarbrough of Florida; daughters, Rachel Scarbrough of Florida, and Jessie Scarbrough and Jackie Scarbrough, both of New York; brothers, Delbert Scarbrough and wife Della of Virginia, Douglas Scarbrough and wife Tammy, and Kavin Scarbrough and wife Gay, all of South Carolina, and Ivan Scarbrough and wife Cheryl of Bluefield; and a sister, Donna Pyles of Herndon, Va.

Mr. Scarbrough was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.
