Priscilla (Marie) Boyd Burgess

Priscilla (Marie) Boyd Burgess, 84, of Oak Hill, died July 29, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Nov. 13, 1925, in Patrick County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Jessie Claude and Mary (Lucy) Whitlock Boyd. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Dudley “J.D.” Burgess, and sisters, Ida McKinney and Goldie Cooper.

Marie was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Oak Hill, a longtime member of an Oak Hill garden club and the Friday Dessert Bridge Club. She loved to work in her yard and play bridge.

She was a retired secretary for Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne (Judy) and James Hicks of Oak Hill; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Tonja and Gary Moore of Miramar, Fla.; brothers, Freel Boyd of Oak Hill and James (Roy) Boyd of Summersville; sisters, Sylvia Young of Oak Hill and Ardenia (Mickey) Whitt of Fayetteville; great-grandchildren, Stefanie Moore, Loren Moore and Gary (Trace) Moore III, all of Miramar; and a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Services were Aug. 2 at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Oak Hill with her nephew, Father Rick Rutledge, officiating. Entombment was at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Memorial Fund at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 345 Kelly Avenue, Oak Hill, WV 25901.

Harry Edgar Carson

Harry Edgar Carson, 88, of Ansted, died July 27, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born June 12, 1922, at Montgomery, he was the son of the late Gomer

Dewey and Mattie Huey Carson. His wife, Mildred Madeline Wooldridge Carson; a sister, Betty Cox; and brothers, George Carson, Robert Carson and Gomer Carson Jr., also preceded him in death.

Mr. Carson was a member of the Turkey Creek Church of God. He retired

from the Fayette County Board of Education having worked in the

Transportation Department.

Surviving: daughter, Anna Johns of Fayetteville; son, Kenneth

“Wings” Carson of Ansted; grandchildren, Samantha Johns of

Kentucky, Theodore Johns of  Hawaii and Andrew Johns of Fayetteville; and several nieces and great-nieces.

Services were July 30 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Bill Parker officiating. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.  The family requests memorial donations be made in memory of Mr. Carson to Quota International of the Plateau Area, PO Box 1020, Oak Hill WV 25901 to assist with their hearing-impaired scholarship.

Brenda Aileen Russo Fuller

Brenda Aileen Russo Fuller, 61, of Mount Hope, died Aug. 2, 2010, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Born Aug. 22, 1948, at Powhatan, she was the daughter of the late Antonia and Josie York Russo. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Fuller.

Brenda attended the Bradley Church of God and Sand Branch Worship Center. She was a homemaker.

Surviving: daughter, Christina Gail Gill of Mount Hope; sister, Maryann Beverly of Chesapeake; brothers, Danny Russo of New Jersey and Phillip Russo of Clarksburg; and grandchildren, Britney Nicole Gill, Brandon Michael Gill, Felicia May Gill and Kaleb Landon Gill.

Mrs. Fuller was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Virgie Irene Bryant Tyler James

Virgie Irene Bryant Tyler James, 83, of Oak Hill, died July 31, 2010, at Heartland of Beckley.

Born July 23, 1927, at Ballangee, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Lula Atkins Bryant. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Russell James; by sisters, Mabel Bryant, Anna Hague and Catherine Bryant; and by brothers, Ralph, Sidney, Herman, Henry and Lowell Bryant.

Virgie was a homemaker and past employee of White Oak Drug Store in Oak Hill.

Surviving: her son, Tim Tyler of Greensboro, N.C.; daughters, Sandra Tyler and Sharon Day, both of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Tammy Tyler of Greensboro, Dan Young of Raleigh, N.C., and Suzanna Day, Eric Sizemore and Stephen Sizemore, all of Oak Hill; great-grandchildren, Jack Shannon and Max Shannon, both of Greensboro, Kiley Sizemore of Oak Hill, Vaden Young of Raleigh, N.C., and Logan Richmond of Fayetteville; and a brother, Roger Bryant and his wife, Peggy, of Fayetteville.

Funeral services were Aug. 3 at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Pastor Max Benson officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Melvin Joseph (Joe) Martin Sr.

Melvin Joseph (Joe) Martin Sr., 71, of Meadow Bridge, died July 24, 2010, in the Beckley VA Medical Center following a long illness.

Born Nov. 13, 1938, at Elton, he was the son of the late John Melvin and Margaret Kathryn Wyant Martin. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Marie Garcia Martin; son, Franklin Eugene Martin; and sister, Loretta Martin Patterson.

Joe worked as a truck driver. He enjoyed fishing, reading and writing poetry.

He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church at Meadow Bridge.

Surviving: sons, Melvin Joseph Martin Jr. (Tani) of Medina, Ohio, Benjamin Owen Martin (Megan) of Sacramento, Calif., and Joe Martin (Betty) of Uhrichsville, Ohio; daughters, Katherine Collins (Richard) of Medina, Ohio, Iona Fausto (Joe) of Uhrichsville, Ohio, and Teresa Gruber of Lake Country, Fla.; brothers, Donald Martin of Danese, Calvin Martin of Jacksonville, Fla., and Larry Martin and Lloyd Martin, both of Green Sulphur Springs; grandchildren, Michael and Cassandra Martin, Julie, Joe Jr., Misti and Mackenzie Martin, Stanley, Angie and Allen Fausto and John and Amy Gruber; and several nieces and nephews.

Service, officiated by Pastor Sebby Volpe, was July 29 at Smathers Funeral Chapel. Burial was in the Poe Road Cemetery in Medina, Ohio on July 30.

Elsie Trice Sims

Elsie Trice Sims, 97, of Oak Hill/ Harlem Heights, died July 25, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, after a brief illness.

Born June 6, 1913, in Hilltop, she was the daughter of the late Soule Lafayette Trice and Georgia Anna Dillard Trice. She also was preceded in death by James H Sims, her husband of 68 years, and siblings George, Ballard, Janet, Jessie and Delaware.

Elsie was a homemaker who loved to cook, work in her garden, and play the piano.

She and her late husband were founding members of the Community Baptist Church in Harlem Heights, where she served as its first pianist. She last served as the pianist for the First Baptist Church of Hilltop until her health began to decline.

Surviving: her daughters, Betty Sims (Philip) Brown of Columbia, Md., and Peggy (Fred) Warner of Beckley; granddaughter, Michele Jackson (William) Laney and great- granddaughter Jalen, all of Hawaii; great-grandson, Julian Douglas of Greensboro, N.C.; many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and her much devoted friends, Thelma Workman of Fayetteville, Bill and Debbie Smith of New Concord, Ohio, and Betty Dearing of Hilltop.

Funeral service was July 31 at Heart of God Ministries, Beckley, with Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Entombment followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Prosperity.

Richard “Jack” Skaggs, 79, of Ansted, died Nov. 5, 2009, in Summerfield, N.C.

A memorial service was held July 31 at Westlake Cemetery in Ansted.

Pauline Elizabeth Jarrett Workman

Pauline Elizabeth Jarrett “Tootsie” Workman, 83, of Beckley, died Aug. 2, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Dina Baggett, following a long illness.

Born Dec. 7, 1926, at Milburn, she was the daughter of the late Theron Jarrett and Rosemary Drain Jarrett. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Workman; a daughter, Donna Shea; and by a son, Larry Workman.

Mrs. Workman was a homemaker and a member of the Ewing Creek Church at Clear Creek. She had made her home in Artie for most of her life.

Surviving: her children, Deanna Sizow and her husband, Michael, of Virginia Beach, Va., Lonnie Workman and his wife, Candy, of Fayetteville, and Dina Baggett and her husband, Daniel, of Beckley; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Workman of Clear Creek; a special friend of the family, Michael Proffitt of Beckley; brothers, Jimmy Jarrett and his wife, Evelyn, of Pax, and Donnie Jarrett and his wife, Edith, of Oak Hill; sisters, Caroline Smathers of Oak Hill, and Shirley Jarrett of Texas; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at the Ewing Creek Church at Clear Creek, with the Rev. Loretta Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at the Workman Family Cemetery at Artie.
