Bobby C. Blevins

Bobby Clinton Blevins, 76, of Fayetteville, died Feb. 24, 2010, in Goldsboro, N.C.

Born April 19, 1933, at Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Arthur and Nanny Mae Haga Blevins. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Clema Frazier and Anita Hinton; brothers, Junior Blevins and James Blevins; and stepmother, Loretta Blevins.

Mr. Blevins was a carpenter by trade. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and going to the beach. But, most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving: his wife, Cleta M. Pennington Blevins of Fayetteville; daughters, Judy Duncan of Fayetteville, Anita Harmon and husband Jerry of Marion, Va., Jane Wilcox and Donnie Hodges of Boone, N.C., and Bobbie Ann Stover and husband Robert Stover of Dudley, N.C.; sons, Steve Pennington and companion Debbie of Galax, Va., and Randy Hall and wife Jamie of Aldie, Va.; sisters, Kay, Linda, and Melba; brother, Hubert; stepbrother, Jerry Perkins; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many special friends and family.

Funeral services were March 1 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Rev. Jerry Perkins officiating. Burial followed in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Sherry Lynn Bird

Sherry Lynn Bird, 56, of Kimberly, died Feb.  21, 2010.

Born March 23, 1953, in Montgomery, she was the daughter of the late Delmar and Joetta Shears McCallister. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Bird; brother, Ronnie McCallister; and sisters, Rhonda McClellan and Lynn Fauber.

Mrs. Bird was a registered nurse with 36 years of service with St. Francis Hospital in Charleston.

Surviving: daughter, Jessica Richards and granddog “Keble” of San Diego, Calif.; sons, Jeremy Bird of St. Albans and Steven Bird and his wife, Theresa, of Cannelton; grandchildren, Emily and Niedra; and brother, David McCallister of Ansted.

Service was Feb. 27 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery.

James A. Caldwell

James A. Caldwell, 62, of Edmond, died Feb. 25, 2010.

Born Feb. 12, 1948, he was a son of the late Randolph Caldwell and Nellie Caldwell of Lookout. He also was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Caldwell.

He was a loving father and was cared for by family, many friends and loved ones.

Mr. Caldwell was a heavy duty equipment operator for approximately 40 years and was last employed by Bluestone Coal Corporation.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: daughter, Monica Caldwell of Summersville; sons, James Caldwell II of Florida and Randy Caldwell of Hayes, Va.; a brother, Darrell Caldwell and Kathy of Lookout; sisters, Judy Horrocks and James of Edmond, and Jean Miller and Howard of Lookout; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were March 1 at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Rev. Kenny Hayes and Rev. Leonard Sizemore officiating. Burial followed at Kesler Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Gene Carte

Gene Carte, 64, of Charleston and Seebert, died Feb. 27, 2010, at home, surrounded with love in the company of his wife, Ann, and his two sons, Clint and David.

Born Jan. 28, 1946, in Charleston, Gene was the only child of Dorothy Virginia and Gene Carte Sr.

He was raised in Smithers, graduated from Montgomery High School in 1963, West Virginia University in 1967 and the West Virginia University College of Law in 1970. Gene was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, and president of his law class.

He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. In January 1974, he received the Joint Service Commendation Medal from the Department of Defense for meritorious service.

In addition to practicing law for 20 years in Fayetteville with James Blankenship, Gene served as a Fayette County Commissioner from 1986 to 2000. Prior to that, he was also an assistant Fayette County prosecutor. At the time of his death, he was serving as counsel to the WV Senate Committee on Economic Development, a position he had held since 2000.

Gene’s parents opened a restaurant in Smithers called the Burger Carte in 1963, and it became a local icon. After his parents died, Carte had different people manage the restaurant. In 2008, he sold the Burger Carte to Doug and Debbie Divita.

Gene was an avid reader, a tennis player, a philosopher and poet, a trout fisherman, and an adventurer and traveler. He was a friend to many, an aficionado of James Joyce and anything Irish and a seeker for knowledge.

Next to being at his cabin on the Greenbrier River, he was happiest when playing with his tennis groups at Edgewood Country Club and the Charleston Tennis Indoor Center, or participating in his reading and philosophy groups, or exploring new places.

Surviving: his wife, Ann Hosey Garcelon; his sons, Willard Clinton Carte of Washington, D.C., and David Hedrick Carte of Charlotte, N.C.; his beloved mother-in-law, Bernice Hosey of Charleston; an aunt, Frances Carte Webb of Greer, S.C.; and first cousins, Charles (Betty) Morton of Charleston, Richard (Carol) Smith of Fayetteville, Willard Smith of Piedmont, S.C., Mike Lilly of Port Hueneme, Calif., Terri Lilly of Camden, Maine,  Ruth Ann (Mrs. Robert) Cavalier of Smithers, Karen (Mrs. Hamilton) Reid of Charleston, Pam Lively of Greer, S.C., and Melinda Catalano of Florida.

He donated his body to medical science at West Virginia University. A literary tribute to Gene will be held in March at the Kanawha County Public Library and a celebration of his life will be held later in Seebert.

Glenna Ruth Carter

Glenna Ruth Carter, 61, of Mount Hope, died Feb. 26, 2010, at her home following a long illness.

Born March 18, 1948, at Mount Hope, she was the daughter of the late William Ray and Ruth Evelyn Harmon Carter. A son, Steven Wormer, and a brother, James R. Carter, also preceded her in death.

Glenna was formerly employed as a cook for the Holiday Inn in Oak Hill.

Surviving: sons, William Carl Dick and wife Deanna and their daughters, Carla and Brittany, of Colcord, and Roger Ray Dorton and his children, Casey, Cheyenna, Kordel and Skylar, all of Arizona; additional grandchildren, Jackie and Becky of California and Christopher Wormer of Oak Hill; and four brothers and two sisters.

In accordance with her wishes, Mrs. Carter’s body was donated to the West Virginia University Human Gift Registry. There will be no visitation or service.

Courtney Cordle

Courtney “Gail” Cordle, 75, of Smithers, died Feb. 28, 2010, in University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Born Nov. 25, 1934, in Long Branch, she was the daughter of the late Seibert and Clemma Ayres Warren. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Seibert Warren Jr. and Richard “Dick” Warren.

Gail was retired from the State of West Virginia and had been a former employee of G. C. Murphy’s in Montgomery.

She was an active member of Campbell Memorial Baptist Church in Smithers where she was a member of the Grace Hatch Circle and assistant church treasurer. She also was a volunteer at Montgomery Elderly Care Center.

Gail was a resident of the Montgomery and Smithers area for more than 55 years. She was a caring and loving friend to many.

Surviving: daughters, Patricia Gail Murphy and her husband, Joe, of Greenup, Ky., and Brenda Darlene Burney and her husband, Tommy, of Clarksville, Tenn.; sisters, Celia Williams of Fayetteville, Marilyn Patton of Hilliard, Ohio, and Joyce Spade of Mt. Hope; grandchildren, Patti Jo Loree and her husband, Craig, Brian Murphy, Aaron Murphy and Courtney Burney; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Frankie, Jake and Josh.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4 at Campbell Memorial Baptist Church in Smithers with Rev. Chester Bird officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Lloyd Andrew Flint

Lloyd Andrew Flint, 60, of Layland, died Feb. 25, 2010, at his home following a short illness.

Born Dec. 19, 1949, in Slater Hollow, Fayette County, he was the son of the late Basil Ray and Mary Evelyn Rose Flint of Layland. He also was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd Andrew Flint II; a sister, Brenda Gay Flint; and a brother, Ray Flint.

Lloyd was a lifelong resident of Chestnut Knob. He enjoyed the outdoors, watching movies, spending time with family, and riding four-wheelers.

Surviving: his wife, Diane Ruth Cozart Flint; daughters, Rita Flint and Brenda Flint; a grandson, Casper Flint; and granddaughter, Dezira Goins, all of Layland; his sisters and brothers, Jr. Flint, his twin, and wife Violet of Lochgelly, Janie Kincaid and husband Lee of Pineyview, Leah “Cookie” Vance of Kentucky, and Robert “Buddy” Flint and wife Janice, and Buster Flint and wife Denise, all of Layland; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and close friends, including, Timmy White, Clayton White, Marvin Fitzpatrick, John Goins and his daughter’s fiancé Billy Short and family; brother-in-law, Carlos “Bubby” Cozart and wife Jerri; sisters-in-law, Janie Flint and Donna Lucas, all of Beckley; and several other family and friends including a little girl in Michigan who thought the world of him, Mary Elaine Steven.

Services were March 3 at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Rev. Elmer Ray Goins officiating. Burial followed in the Harrah Cemetery at Backus Mountain.

Charles E. Fox

Charles E. Fox, 83, of Fayetteville, died Feb. 25, 2010, at home following a short illness.

Born Dec. 31, 1926, at Edmond, he was the son of the late Howard McKinley Fox and Mayme Jane Meadows Fox. He also was preceded in death by his daughter, Charlene Gay Fox Murphy; a brother, James Patrick Fox; and a sister, Glenna Florence Lively.

Mr. Fox served his country proudly in the United States Army during World War II. He was a coal miner for 40 years and retired from Imperial Colliery at Burnwell. He was a member of the UMWA.

Surviving: his wife, Norma Faye Pridemore Fox of Fayetteville; daughter, Norma Jane Fox of Fayetteville; son, Roger Lee Fox of Fayetteville; granddaughter, Sally Myers of Los Angeles, Calif.; and eldest brother, Durward Fox of Edmond.

In keeping with Mr. Fox’s wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no services.

Thomas L. Kidd Jr.

Thomas L. Kidd Jr., 82, of Oak Hill, died Feb. 25, 2010, at his home.

Born June 12, 1927, at Mullens, he was the son of the late Thomas L. Kidd Sr. and Savilla Maude Bocook Kidd Walker. His wife, Gladys E. Burgess Kidd; sons, Gary Thomas Kidd and David Leslie Kidd; a brother, Jack Kidd; sister, Betty Seaman; and son-in-law, Brian Donald Sherman, also preceded him in death.

He was a retired foreman for the American Screw Manufacturing Company who made parts for NASA. 

Mr. Kidd was a member of the Gentry Baptist Church at Sanger and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving: his only daughter, Linda Sherman; granddaughters, Melanie M. Prevette and Amber Willoughby and husband Jerry; and great-grandchildren, Ashton Nicole, Savanna Lynn and Brian Thomas Prevette and Bailey Brooke Willoughby.

Services were Feb. 28 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Ralph Shupe and the Rev. Bill Drennen officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill with military graveside rites by VFW Post #3110 of Oak Hill.

Drucilla Kidwell Berry Rhodes

Drucilla Ellen Kidwell Berry Rhodes, 95, of Oak Hill, died March 1, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Sue Gilkerson of Gatewood.

Born May 21, 1914, at Meadow Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Eli Daniel Kidwell and Cora Gwinn Kidwell. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Berry, and her second husband, Billy Rhodes; brothers, Robert Kidwell, Earl Kidwell, Judson Kidwell, and Brackenridge Kidwell; and son-in-law, Jim Gilkerson.

Granny Rhodes worked with the Boy Scouts and she enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was the oldest of the Gwinn clan.

Surviving: her daughters, Cora Morrison of Oak Hill, Gloria Sue Gilkerson of Gatewood, and Doris Faye Goins and husband Meldon of Oak Hill; nieces, Ramona Nunley and Joann Zopp; nephews, Clifford Kidwell and Jerry Kidwell; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Gravesides services were March 3 at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Joe Cuthbertson officiating.

Gwendolyn Y. ‘Gwen’ Smallwood

Gwendolyn Y. “Gwen” Smallwood, 52, of Hagerstown, Md., died peacefully with her family by her side on Feb. 24, 2010, at her home.

Born Dec. 16, 1957, in Mt. Ranier, Md., she was the daughter of Alva L. and Thelma J. Dunbar of West Virginia.

Mrs. Smallwood was employed as the Customer Service Manager at Rockville Printing and Graphics in Rockville, Md.

She was a member of the Ringgold Church of Christ.

Surviving, in addition to her parents: her husband of 30 years, Mark A. Smallwood Sr.; her daughter, Cindy M. Smallwood and her friend Chris Murtha of York, Pa.; sons, Mark A. Smallwood Jr. and his wife, Emily, of Frederick, Md., Chris L. Smallwood and Jason E. Smallwood and his wife, Jennifer, all of Hagerstown; sister, Pam and her husband, Tim Loeffler, of West Virginia; brother, Lee Dunbar and his wife, Irene, of West Virginia; grandchildren, Adam M. Cornell and Emma G. Smallwood, both of Hagerstown, and Riley N. Smallwood of Frederick; her husband’s parents, Gene and Elizabeth Smallwood of North Carolina; and her husband’s sister, Barbara and her husband, Bill Siedel, of Damascus, Md.; and many extended family and friends.

A funeral ceremony was held Feb. 28 at the Ringgold Church of Christ, Hagerstown. Pastors Don Conley and Lee Dunbar officiated. Interment followed at the Ringgold Cemetery.

Dennis Ray Sutphin

Dennis Ray Sutphin, 66, of New Port Richey, Fla., died Feb. 24, 2010, from complications following surgery.

Born Dec. 13, 1944, in Summerlee, he was the son of Bessie Cantley Sutphin of Oak Hill, and the late William A. Sutphin. A brother, the Rev. Dr. William Ashby Sutphin Jr. of Kernersville, N.C., also preceded him in death.

Mr. Sutphin was a graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill, Beckley College and Marshall University in Huntington.

He was employed for a number of years in the Accounting Division of the West Virginia Department of Highways at their headquarters in Charleston before accepting a position in the Business Department of Eastern Kentucky Mack. After relocating to Florida, Dennis served for 12 years as comptroller for Innisbruck Resort and Country Club, Tarpon Springs, Fla., and prior to his retirement, as manager of Ocean Sands Resort, Madeira Beach, and Florida.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: his wife, Linda; children, D.R. “Butch” Sutphin Jr. and his wife, Sue, and Sheryl Every and her husband, Mark, all of New Port Richey; a sister, Susan Johnson and her husband, Randy, of Lewisburg; and six grandchildren.

Interment was in Florida.

Frank Terry

Frank Terry, 74, of Backus Road, Meadow Bridge, died Feb. 7, 2010, at the home of his daughter in Mount Hope, following a short illness.

Born June 2, 1935, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Walker and Mary Morris Terry. He also was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Anna Eloise; sisters, Lorna, Charlotte, Louise, and Ethel; and brothers, Woodrow and Andy.

Mr. Terry was the custodian at  Meadow Bridge High School and worked up until he got sick and wasn’t able to work.

He attended the Danese Holiness Church.

Surviving: daughters, Tina Young of Mt. Hope, and Diane Harrah of Meadow Bridge; sons, Frank Terry Jr. of Danese and Mike Terry of Mount Hope; a sister, Margarete Warrick of Erie, Pa.; a brother, Charles Terry of Glen Jean; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were Feb. 11 at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with the Rev. Shirley Fox officiating. Burial followed in the Ennis Cemetery on Backus Mountain.

James A. Tincher

James A. Tincher, 63, of Oak Hill, died Feb. 6, 2010, at Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 9, 1946, he was the son of the late Jim and Nellie Tincher of Beckley. He also was preceded in death by brothers, Bobby Joe Tincher and Charlie Bill Tincher; and sisters, Irene Jones, Mildred Miller and Gaye Kelly.

Jim made his peace with God and entered heaven with the doors wide opened. He was a very compassionate person. He helped a lot of people throughout his life and he never expected anything in return. Jim touched many people’s lives.

Jim was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1964. He began business as Jim’s Sheet Metal, which became Economy Heating in March 1979, where he was owner and operator until his retirement in 2009, when he handed it over to his  wife and children.

Surviving: his wife, Carolyn Sue Tincher; a son, Charles Jason Tincher and his wife, Misty; a daughter, Robin Sue Reece and husband Billy; his precious grandchildren, Hunter Cole and Caitlin McKenzie Reece and Aaron Gage and Dylan Ty Tincher; a brother, Tommy Ray Tincher and wife Patty of Reidsville, N.C.; and a host of brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral service was Feb. 11 at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Ken Souder officiating. Burial followed in the Hilltop Union Cemetery, Hilltop.

Jesus Perez Tiscareno

Jesus Perez Tiscareno, 62, of Horsecreek Road, Scarbro, died Feb. 28, 2010, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Dec. 30, 1947, at Aguascalientes Aguas, Mexico, he was the son of Manuel Perez of Mexico the late Carmen Tiscareno.

Mr. Tiscareno attended the Long Branch United Methodist Church and was a disabled custodian.

Surviving, in addition to his father: his wife, Debra Johnson Tiscareno; sons, Manuel Tiscareno and Jesse Tiscareno, both of Scarbro; and daughters, Debbie Rauna and husband Nicholas of Pax and Carmen Tiscareno of Scarbro.

Services were March 3 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. Chalmer Abrams officiating. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Oak Hill.

Elnora ‘L’ Woods

Elnora “L” Woods, 80, of Hilltop, died Feb. 7, 2010 at Hilltop Healthcare Center.

Born May 1, 1929, in Carlisle, she was the daughter of the late John and Lurena Edding Woods. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, John Woods Jr. and Steve Woods; and a sister, Willa Mae Savage. 

Elnora completed her education at Dubois High School, Mt. Hope. She was a childcare provider, a licensed missionary, homemaker and a devoted mother.

Elnora accepted Jesus Christ at a very young age. She was a member of Emanuel Tabernacle Baptist Church, Beards Fork, and she fellowshipped with Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Carlisle, under the pastorship of Rev. Charles Brown. At Hilltop Healthcare Center, she served as president of the Resident Counsel; and was interviewed by WOAY TV Station as she spoke to Sen. Nick Rahall on behalf of the residents.

Surviving: her daughter, Geraldine Aikens of Newark, N.J.; a loving sister, Charlotte Martin of Hilltop; grandsons, Kevin (Glenda), Erik and Jermaine, all of Newark; a great-granddaughter, Kelise Aikens of Newark; a special niece who stood by her bedside offering unconditional love and service, Gloria (Charles) Brown; and a host of loving nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.  

Funeral service was Feb. 12 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Carlisle, with Rev. Charles Brown and Sister Ramona Coles officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Larry Robert Workman

Larry Robert Workman, 52, of Workman Creek, died Feb. 25, 2010, at Boone Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 13, 1957, at Scarbro, he was the son of Pauline Workman of Artie and the late Robert Lee Workman. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Donna L. Workman Shea.

Mr. Workman attended the Ewing Creek Church, and was employed by Mountain Edge Mining. He loved to hunt and most of all spend time with his grandchildren.

Surviving: his wife of 27 years, Kathy Workman; children, Brandy Workman of Workman Creek, Michelle Miller and husband Bob of Westerville, Ohio, Dameon Bruns of Glen Daniel, and Kevin Stamm of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Desirae, Nikki, Tylia, Jordy, Kaylie, Keelie, Madison, and Bobby; brother, Lonnie Workman and wife Candy of Fayetteville; sisters, Dina Baggett and husband Daniel of Beckley and Deanna Sizow and husband Micheal of Virginia Beach, Va.; his best buddy, Frankie Workman; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were Feb. 28 at the Ewing Creek Church with Pastor Loretta Taylor and Assistant Pastor Johnny Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the Workman Cemetery at Artie.
