Charlotte Bocook

Charlotte Ruggles Bocook, 94, of Fayetteville, died Sept. 13, 2013, at Hidden Valley Nursing Home, Oak Hill.

Born June 10, 1919, at Winona, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Laura Morris Ruggles. She also was preceded in death by her husband, David Hamilton Bocook; and her son, David William Bocook.

Mrs. Bocook was a homemaker.

Surviving: her daughters, Debbie (Bobby) Green of Fayetteville and Sandra (Cecil) Lowry of Napa Valley, Calif.; granddaughters, Michelle Lynn (George) Buehler of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Hollie (Thomas) Beckwith of Lexington Park, Md., Barbara Barnhart of Jackson, Calif., Karen Canzoneri of San Mateo, Calif., Amy Neilsen of Laguna, Calif., and Jennifer Carruthers of San Mateo, Calif.; many great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services were held Sept. 15 at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

William Frazer Epperhart

William Frazer Epperhart, 62, of Indian Creek, died Sept. 13, 2013, from a courageous battle with black lung.

Born Sept. 28, 1950, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Edward Clayton Epperhart Sr. and Thelma Faye McMillion Epperhart. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Ann Epperhart, and a brother, Johnny Epperhart.

Mr. Epperhart retired from Cline Resources after 36 years of service. He was a lifelong member of the UMWA Local 9177.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, working on automobiles and being with his family and friends.

Surviving: his daughter, Tina Marie Epperhart; a grandson, William Bailey Fritz III; brothers, Robert Adams and wife Wilma Jean, Edward Epperhart Jr., and David Epperhart and wife Linda, all of Fanrock, Larry Epperhart and wife Teresa of Kopperston, and Timmy and Jimmy Epperhart of Fanrock; sisters, Elizabeth Neely and husband Ray of Columbus, Ohio, Norma Jean Jackson of Nashville, Tenn., Carol Sue Short of Brier Creek, Brenda Morgan of Fanrock, Betty Holleman and husband Paul of Indian Creek, and Linda Vance and husband Tommy of Fanrock; and special friends, Kermit and Louise Justice.

Funeral services were Sept. 16 at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Ralph Whitten officiating. Interment followed at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Barbara Ellen Sanger Fleshman, 74, of Minden, died Sept. 15, 2013.

Martha Ellen Fox

Martha Ellen Fox, 79, of Meadow Bridge, died Sept. 13, 2013, at her residence following a long illness.

Born Oct. 19, 1933, in Landisburg, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Mildred Fury. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Finley Dorn Fox Sr.; a son, Finley Dorn Fox Jr.; grandmother, Susan Gilkerson; sisters, Shirley Lance and Katherine Tuck; and brothers, John and Joseph (Jack) Fury.

Surviving: daughters, Delores Teegarden and husband George of Granite Falls, N.C., Patricia Romine and husband Mike of Meadow Bridge, Donna Campbell of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Mildred “Millie” Fox and husband Ralph Bates of Richmond, Va.; sister, Betty Finlan of Rupert; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Brian Keith Moore

Brian Keith Moore, 44, of Ansted, died Sept. 9, 2013.

He was the youngest son of the late Arthur Edgar Moore and Doreen Bowen Moore.

Brian was a licensed electrician and a co-pastor at Praise Valley Ministries in Belva.

Surviving: his wife of 21 years, Sherry Moore; children, Devin Moore, Jared Moore and Sarah Moore; brothers, James and Rosie Bowen of Hurst, Texas, Robert and Deonne Bowen of White Oak, Eddie and Racheal Moore of Fort Worth, Texas, Terry Moore of Alvarado, Texas, Bobby and Becky Moore of Ansted, Benjamin and Vernice Moore of Ripley, Alan and Melba Moore of Swiss, and Timmy Moore of Falls View; his extended family, Mary Neal, James Elkins, John Elkins, Genevieve and Charles Bowe, Dale Haynes, Charles David and Julie Bowe, Joshua, Barbie and Erin Bowe, Blanche, William and Jeremy Lane as well as many nieces, nephew, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

Funeral services were Sept. 13 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Pastor Charles David Bowe officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor.

Josephine B. Nickell

Josephine B. Nickell, 89, of Oak Hill, died Sept. 11, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born June 8, 1924, at Page, she was the daughter of the late John Julius Bukant Sr. and Bessie Youravish Bukant. She was the stepdaughter of the late Anthony Youravish Jr. and Lora Bukant Novobilsky. Her husband, Ralph Eugene Nickell; brother, John J. Bukant Jr.; half-sisters, Rena King and Mary Wells; and half-brothers, James Anthony Youravish Jr., George Youravish and Joe Youravish, also preceded her in death.

A member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, she also attended the 3F’s Circle.

Josephine was a 1942 graduate of Oak Hill High School. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women.

She was a retired secretary for Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill and had previously been employed by Garvin, later Lively, Insurance Company in Oak Hill.

Surviving: her twin daughters, Pamela Jo Smelcer and husband Harold of Panama City, Fla., and Paula Jean Nickell of Dunbar; and all her caregivers, Rhonda Cox, Julie Lovell, Marlene Lovell, Dorothy Ward and JoAnne Erickson.

Funeral services were Sept. 14 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Dale Ray Preast

Dale Ray Preast, 56, of Rainelle, died Sept. 10, 2013, following a long illness.

Born Oct. 17, 1956, at Gauley Bridge, he was the son of Dencil Ray Preast and Audrey Mae Pullen.

Dale was a devoted, husband, father, grandfather, son and brother to his loving family. He loved his church and loved being the pastor to his congregation at Virginia O’Dell Freewill Baptist Church.

He loved being outdoors and doing everything for everyone.

He was a warehouse manager for the coal industry and also a self-employed service station owner.

Surviving: his loving wife of 38 years, Peggy Carol Sorrell Preast; a daughter, Heather Lynn Hundley of Hilton Village; a son, Dale Ray Preast Jr. and wife Gloria of Salem, Va.; a sister, Debbie McVey and husband Richard of Mt. Hope; and grandchildren, Silas, Paul, Hannah, Cameron and Kenna.

Funeral services were Sept. 14 at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted. Interment followed at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Thelma H. Lightfoot Hughes Ratliff

Thelma H. Lightfoot Hughes Ratliff, 87, of Oak Hill, died Sept. 11, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born May 7, 1926, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Lightfoot and Georgia Lucas Lightfoot Ratkosky. Her first husband, James Hughes; second husband, John Ratliff; son, Kenneth Ratliff; brothers, Robert Lightfoot, David Lee Lightfoot, Andrew J. Lightfoot and Clemor D. Lightfoot; and sister, Virginia Munoz Noffsinger, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Ratliff was a member of the LifeBridge Assembly of God of Oak Hill.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving: her children, Ruth Ellen Holland and husband Dennis of Elkton, Ky., James Hughes and wife Julie of Mechanicsville, Md., and Susan Hughes and husband Robert, and Robert Ratliff, all of Oak Hill; daughter-in-law, Marie Ratliff of Beckley; stepchildren, Diana Wise of Circleville, Ohio, and Darrell Ratliff and wife Janet of Stoutsville, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; one stepgrandson; 18 great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandson.

Funeral services were Sept. 14 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Shirlie Watson officiating. Burial was at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Oak Hill.

Lucille Black Sneddon

Lucille Black Sneddon, 86, of Fayetteville, died Sept. 4, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born Feb. 4, 1927, at Amigo, she was the daughter of the late Charles Lee and Edna Thompson Black. Her husband, Alexander Sneddon, preceded her in death in 2011. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Delmar and Charles Black.

Mrs. Sneddon was a retired telephone operator from AT&T Bell of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a homemaker.

She was a member of Mt. Hope Christian Church, Mt Hope.

Surviving: a son, Scott Sneddon and wife Sandra of Ellijay, Ga.; a daughter, Jean Price of Kennesaw, Ga.; grandchildren, John R. and Michael A. Haders, and Heather J. Frederick and Erin Foremonte; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Robert “Bob” Black and wife Mary of Oak Hill; and sister, Marian Thorne and husband James of Oak Hill.

Funeral service was Sept. 7 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Minister Dennis Kinzer officiating. Entombment followed at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Betty Frances Thomas

Betty Frances Thomas, 92, of Coal City, died Sept. 12, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House.

She was the oldest of 10 children of the late Floyd Leonard (Slim) Thomas and Elsie Lee Ailstock Thomas, born on Oct. 22, 1920, in Mount Hope. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Floyd L. Thomas Jr. and wife Margie and Jerry V. Thomas and wife Betty; and sisters, Mary Lee Thomas, Ruth Moreland and husband Louis and Helen Ritter and husband Roy.

Miss Thomas was an honor graduate of Collins High School, Class of 1938, Epperly Hill. She was the president of the senior class and the editor of “The Pirate,” the Collins High School yearbook.

She continued her education at West Virginia National Business College in Bluefield. She was a member of the girls N.B.C. basketball team.

After graduation, Miss Thomas began her career in 1942 working for Pocahontas Fuel Co. in Bluefield, Va., until retirement in 1984.

Betty enjoyed her retirement years by traveling with family, gardening, reading, canning, baking, hunting, playing cards and games with family. She treasured the history of her family and explored that history through genealogy and family reunions. She was a loving sister, aunt, and cherished friend.

Surviving: brothers, Johnny R. Thomas and wife Wanda, and Jack C. Thomas and wife Rosemary, all of Coal City, Bobby C. (Wheel) Thomas and wife Barbara of Oak Hill, and Jimmy P. Thomas and wife Connie of Oakhurst, Calif.; and 21 nephews and nieces, their spouses and children.

Funeral service was Sept. 14 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Dr. Bob Stoddard officiating. Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Christopher ‘Bryan’ Tilley

Christopher “Bryan” Tilley, 36, of Oak Hill, formerly of Glen Rogers, died Sept. 7, 2013, in Hilltop Center, following a lifelong illness.

Born Aug. 6, 1977, in Beckley, he was the son of Michael and Sharon Thompson Tilley of Glen Rogers.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Arnold “Abe” and Georgia Canada Tilley, and Robert Thompson and Jeanette Thompson Hill.

Bryan was dearly loved by his family. He was never able to do the things on this Earth as we do every day, but now he is walking, talking, and eating at the Master’s Table.

Surviving, in addition to his parents: brothers, Michael Tilley and his wife, Nikki, of Lynco and Andrew Tilley and his wife, April, of Cool Ridge; sister, Cassandra Tilley and her fiancé, John Robert Boyden III, of Beckley; his nephews, Nick, Ryan, Nathan, Erick, and Aaron; his nieces, Kaitlyn, Megan, and Allie; and a host of beloved family and friends.

Services celebrating Bryan’s life were held Sept. 10 in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Dewayne Hurd officiating.

Raymond Lee Ward Sr.

Raymond Lee Ward Sr., 61, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Oak Hill, died Sept. 7, 2013, in Cleveland.

Born July 5, 1952, he was the son of the late Floyd and Garnet Tompkins Ward. His beloved wife, Sharon Sue Crouch Ward, also preceded him in death on June 29, 2013.

Surviving: sons, James Ward and wife Sue, Raymond Ward Jr., and John Ward and wife Kelly, all of Cleveland; stepdaughters, Jeanette Nuckles and husband Harold, and Debra Parker, all of Oak Hill; brothers, Frank Ward of Minden, and Mike Ward and Elvie Ward, both of Oak Hill; sisters, Betty Craft of Oak Hill, Connie Berry of Minden and Susie Willoughby of Blacksburg, S.C.; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial services was held Sept. 14 at the Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle with Pastor Eric Smith officiating. His cremains were laid to rest beside his wife at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Oak Hill.

Louise L. Williams

Louise L. Williams, 87, of Fayetteville, died Sept, 14, 2013, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following an extended illness.

Born March 7, 1926, in Kanawha County, she was the daughter of the late William and Ocie Grass Holly. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Williams; a brother, Orbie Holly; and sisters, Helen Jones and Reba Walton.

Louise loved to cook, crafts, and read. One of her favorite things to do was to go out and eat.

Surviving: her sister, Pearl Lafferty of Oak Hill; nephew, Howard Jones; nieces, Rosie Kelly, Edna Rose, Debbie Richmond, and Dreama Gray; and several extended family members.

Funeral services were Sept. 17 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Robert Pauley officiating. Burial followed at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Leonard R. Wood

Leonard R. Wood, 91, of Fayetteville, died Sept. 14, 2013, at home following an extended illness.

Born Feb. 22, 1922, at Dempsey, he was a son of the late Dallas William and Sarah Eileen Robinett Wood. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Eldridge B. Wood.

Mr. Wood had attended the Lansing Baptist Church in Lansing and was an Army veteran of World War II and a lifetime member of the Fayetteville American Legion Post 149.

He had built several homes in the Fayette County area and was a coal miner and a bridge superintendent.

Surviving: his wife, Laura Wood; children, Linda Ramsey and her husband, Eddie, Bruce Wood and his wife, Becky, and Craig Wood and his wife, Sonya; grandchildren, Kimberly Wood, Greg Wood and Tara Sisk; great-grandchildren, Emma Wood and Ethan Sisk; brother, Lavern Wood; sister, Nannie Lee Hundley; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were Sept. 17 at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating. There was no visitation.

William Charles Woods

Mr. William Charles Woods, 94, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Mt. Hope, died Sept. 5, 2013.

Born March 1, 1919, he was the son of the late Nathaniel and Flossie Woods. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Woods; brother, Lewis Woods; and first wife, Alease Woods.

He was a retired coal miner and a Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving: his daughter, Roxane (Richard) Littlejohn; granddaughters, Amber Johnson and Brittney LaPrade; and great-grandsons, Kerry and Taivon Johnson, all of Winston-Salem.

Funeral services were Sept. 14 at the Glorious Church of God in Christ, Mt. Hope, with Bishop John Grant officiating. Entombment followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Prosperity.
