Ruth Halstead McClung

Ruth Halstead McClung, 81, died June 1, 2013, at the home of her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Amanda and Scott Keffer, surrounded by her loving family following a short battle with cancer.

Born in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Lillian Basham Halstead, and a former resident of Oak Hill, but made her home in South Point, Ohio. She also was preceded in death by her brother, Davy Halstead.

Ruth had her master’s degree in social work and psycho-therapy. She was retired from the VA Hospital in Huntington, and following her retirement, she volunteered at the Women’s Resource Center in Huntington. Through her work there and in the private sector she helped many people find emotional healing.

Ruth dearly loved her family, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved shopping, and dancing.

Surviving: her daughters, Dee Hendrick of Victor, Katrina McClung of Huntington, Katherine Settle of Manhattan, Kan., and Cynthia McClung of Kapaa, Hawaii; grandchildren, Christopher Hendrick and wife Teresa of Fayetteville, Amanda Keffer and her husband, Scott, of Victor, Leanne Rice and her husband, and GG’s comic adversary, Josh, of Fayetteville, and Nathanial Settle of Manhattan, Kan.; great-grandchildren, Malerie, Hillary, Meagan Hendrick, Savannah, Sarah, Braxton, Benjamin Keffer, and Natalee, Lauren, and Lance Rice; sisters, Linda Bowman and her husband, Bob, and Lee Dillon; brother, Jim and Genevieve Halstead; her little dog, Oscar, whom she loved so much; and a host of nieces and nephews and beloved friends.

In keeping with Ruth’s wishes she has been cremated.

Services celebrating her life were held June 6 at the Mountain View Church of God, Hilltop, with Pastor Rudell Bloomfield officiating. Private inurnment services will take place at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Her family requests donations of sympathy be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, or any Women’s Resource Center.
