Orville Barker Jr.

Orville Barker Jr., 66, of Hilltop, died Nov. 5, 2012, at home.

Born June 6, 1946, at Terry, he was the son of the late Orville and Myrtle Virginia Jeffery Barker. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Billie E. Barker, Lester L. Barker, David W. Barker and Kenneth Ray Barker; and a sister, Bonnie S. McQuerry.

Mr. Barker was a retired self-employed carpenter.

Surviving: his sister, Betty L. Adkins and husband Lee of Garrettsville, Ohio; and his brother, Herbert Barker and wife Nancy of Racine, Ohio.

Funeral services were Nov. 8, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Rev. Danny Damron officiating. Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Ronald Mark Chapman Jr.

Ronald Mark Chapman Jr., 38, of Mount Hope, died Oct. 31, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Dec. 20, 1973, at Beckley, he was the son of Ronald Mark Chapman and his wife, Lisa, of Beckley, and Roberta Vipperman Clark and her husband, James, of Mount Hope.

Surviving, in addition to his parents: his wife, Renee Hall Chapman; children, Savannah Brooke Chapman and Zachary Jordan Brown, both of Mount Hope, Cheyenne Dakotalynn Chapman of Virginia, Devin Michael Hobart of Ohio and Peyton Olivia Chapman of Bolt; sisters, Evelyn Marie Dwier of Crab Orchard, April Dawn Chapman of Mount Hope, and Tabitha Rice of Crab Orchard; and brothers, John Chapman of Crab Orchard and James Chapman of Beckley.

Funeral services were Nov. 4, at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope, with Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

John D. Hart

John D. Hart, 68, of New Vienna, Ohio, died Nov. 10, 2012, in the Highland District Hospital.

Born Oct. 9, 1944, in Ansted, he was the son of the late Arnold and Nettie Neff Hart. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Hart, and sister, Norene Emogene Hart.

John was a graduate of Ansted High School.

He had worked and retired from DHL in Wilmington, Tecumseh Products, where he was a supervisor for 17 years, and worked for the Schwann food service.

John attended the Lee’s Creek Church of Christ.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 343 of Nevada, Ohio; the Elks Lodge 129 of Washington C.H., Ohio; and the Moose Lodge 1167 of Delaware, Ohio.

Surviving: his wife of 32 years, the former Kay Safford; his children, Dennis Dean Hart and Dennise Dawn Hart, both of Summersville, Vince Stineman of O’Fallon, Ill., and Angel (Mitch) Dials of Lewis Center; grandchildren, Aspen Prather, Denver Prather, and Emily Stineman; nine nieces and nephews; 16 great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-nephew; sisters, Ruth Hogg of Ansted, Joella Herbert of Fayetteville, and Patsy McGraw of Ansted; and brothers, George Hart of Landrum, S.C., and Allen (Felicia) Hart of Ansted.

Funeral service was Nov. 14, in Ebright Funeral Home, Frankfort, Ohio, with Rev. Dan Bill officiating.

In keeping with John’s wishes, following the funeral service, cremation took place.

Cheryl Kessinger

Cheryl Kessinger, 65, of Mount Hope, died peacefully Nov. 7, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House, following an extended illness.

Born July 9, 1947, in Guyandotte, Mich., she was the daughter of Erma Bennett Waddell of Bradley and the late William Waddell. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pam Cooper.

Cheryl enjoyed gardening, especially planting her flowers. She also enjoyed raising shelties and collies.

She was also of the Baptist faith.

Surviving, in addition to her mother: her husband of 44 years, Jerry Kessinger, at home; a daughter, Christina Kessinger of Mount Hope; and also some special friends, Debbie Smith, Karen Thompson, Pam Reynolds, Sandy Gunther, Sue Turtly, Diane Elswick, and Sherry Williams.

A service to celebrate the life of Cheryl Kessinger was conducted Nov. 10, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley, with Mike Kessinger officiating. Interment followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Charles Martin

Charles Martin, 51, of Mt. Hope, died Nov. 10, 2012.

Graveside services were held Nov. 13, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Rosie Mae Martin

Rosie Mae Martin, 89, of Danese, died Nov. 12, 2012, at the home of her caregivers, Patricia and Lewis Cales at Sandstone, following an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 11, 1923, at Red Springs, the daughter of the late Anderson Harrison and Louie Edna Ennis Goddard. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, George W. Martin Sr.; a son, Roger Lee Martin; sisters, Ruby, Genevie, Virginia and Gladys; and a brother, Owen.

Rosie was a homemaker, and a member of Millbrook Baptist Church at Crickmer. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving: a daughter, Juanita Hanshew and husband Hilbert of Danese; a son, George Martin Jr. and wife Reva of Danese; grandchildren and spouses, Shelia and Dewey Martin of Virginia, Sandy and Frank Shuck of Danese, Rhonda and Brian Neely of Virginia, Shawn and Shelia Hanshew of Beaver, and Jill and Allen Kinder of Danese; great-grandchildren, Josh and Kaleigh Neely of Virginia, Maddy and Jessie Shuck of Danese, and Weslee Kinder of Danese; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Steve Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Martin Cemetery at Crickmer.

Wayne Allen Powers

Wayne Allen Powers, 50, of Scarbro, died Nov. 11, 2012, at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Oak Hill.

Born April 24, 1962, at Chantilly, Va., he was the son of the late Hobert Henry Powers Sr. and Hilda Gay Shaffer Powers. A sister, Mary Fitzgerald, also preceded him in death.

He was a carpenter.

Surviving: brothers, Norman Lee Powers of Scarbro and Hobert Henry Powers Jr. of Bradley; half brother, Thomas Workman of Dumfries, Va.; and sisters, Bobby Jo Powers of Arlington, Va.,  Deborah Jones of Fayetteville, and Patricia Shumake of Scarbro.

Funeral services were Nov. 14, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Rev. Freddie Davenport Sr. officiating. Burial was at Bibb Cemetery at Gatewood.

Percy Alexander Saunders

Mr. Percy Alexander Saunders, 59, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 6, 2012, at his residence.

Born May 14, 1953, in Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Edwin Farrell and Martha Booker Saunders. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Eugene and Henry; and a sister, Martha Ann Gwinn.

Mr. Saunders worked at Charleston Construction Company and New Beckley Coal Company, and was a member of  International AFL-CIO and Brotherhood of Teamsters Local Union No. 175.

Surviving: his brothers, Edwin Saunders of Bridgeport, Charles Saunders of Charleston, John Saunders of Charlotte, N.C., Clarence Saunders of Oak Hill, and Robert Saunders of Huntington; sisters, Bertha King of Gary, Ind., Roberta Saunders of Charleston, Bessie Jones of Charlotte, N.C., and Nancy Saunders of Oak Hill; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Ritchie & Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel, 748 S. Fayette Street, Beckley, with Rev. Abner Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Donald Roy Williams

Donald Roy Williams, 71, of  Pax, died Nov. 12, 2012, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington.

Born Aug. 8, 1941, at Clear Creek, he was the son of the late Sherman  and Orfice Wriston Williams. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Scarbrough Williams; a son, Paul David Williams; son-in-law, Cecil Williams; sister, Millie Wilson; and brothers, Ronald Williams and Glen Williams.

He was a retired coal miner for Consol Coal.

Mr. Williams was a member of the Pax Worship Center and UMWA Local #1330.  

Surviving: sons, Dwayne Williams and wife Judy, and Gary Williams and wife Renee, all of Pax; daughters, Theresa Tyree and husband Robert, Rebecca Pritt and husband Charlie, and Sandra Williams, all of Pax; brothers, Thurmond Williams and Ricky Williams, both of Pax; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 16,  at 1 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Pastor Dwayne Williams and Pastor Darrell Ewing officiating. Burial will be at Willis Branch Community Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m.

David Workman

David Lee “Dave” Workman, 25, of Lansing, died Nov. 11, 2012, at CAMC General Division, Charleston.

Born June 30, 1987, at Beckley, he was the son of John Workman and the late Lisa Renee Tincher Workman, who preceded him in death in 2001.

Dave shared a “gift of life” by being an organ donor and because of his generous gift many lives will be enriched.

He worked in construction at various coal mines in West Virginia.  

Surviving: his father, John Workman and stepmother Donna of Lansing; brothers, Dennis Workman and wife Julie of Lansing, and John Workman Jr. of Kentucky; nephews, Jacob Workman, James Workman, Casey Workman, and Isaac Workman; grandmother, Josephine Workman of Lansing; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Rev. Paul Gene Syner officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Cora Ethel Parrish Wotring

Cora Ethel Parrish Wotring, 95, of Mount Hope, died Nov. 11, 2012, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Born April 30, 1917, at Clifftop, she was the daughter of the late George Parrish Sr. and Luvinia Pyatt Parrish. Her husband, Loraine “Pete” Wotring, preceded her in death. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family as she was also preceded by five brothers and three sisters.

She was a homemaker and former clerk for Hill’s Department Store, Beckley.  

Mrs. Wotring was a member of the Mount Hope United Methodist Church, Winolia Chapter No. 59 O.E.S., and was a Pink Lady volunteer at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Surviving: son, Raymond “Ray” Wotring and wife Bonnie of Manassas, Va.; a daughter, Nancy Kesler and husband Galen of Rawlings, Md.; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Nov. 14, at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope, with Dr. Charles Miller officiating. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.
