Dr. John Repaire

Surrounded by his loving family, Dr. John Richard Repaire of San Diego, Calif., died Nov. 28, 2012, after a courageous battle with melanoma.

John was born Aug. 11, 1936, in Charleston, son of the late Edna Jane Lindley Repaire and Richard Gerald Repaire of Montgomery.

He was a graduate of Montgomery High School, West Virginia University, and the Medical College of Virginia. He served his internship at Charleston Memorial Hospital in Charleston, and his residency at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Mich.

Following residency and three years’ private practice in San Diego, Calif., John served as a captain in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Taichung, Taiwan, where he headed up a base hospital for wounded soldiers returning from Vietnam.

After his return from service, he entered private practice again in San Diego, and later became one of the charter members for the specialty of American Family Physicians. He was very passionate about the care of his patients and was one of the few doctors who would deliver babies in the home in the ‘70s and early ‘80s.  During these years he delivered close to 2,000 babies.

In the late ‘80s, he practiced medicine at a Coal Valley Medical Clinic in Smithers, and worked in the emergency room and trauma center in Beckley. After returning to California in 1991, he worked for the U.S. Navy as a civilian medical doctor until his retirement in 2007.

He was a past member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning his Eagle Scout award as a teenager. His love of Scouts led him to be a troop leader in his years in West Virginia.

He was also a 32nd degree mason and a member of the Shriners of Charleston.

He maintained his credentialing in the American Academy of Family Physicians and licensure with the Medical Board of California.

Surviving: his wife of 54 years, Nancy Ree Arnold Repaire; children, their spouses and grandchildren, Suzanne and Jim Robinson, Nicole and Steven Harris of Chula Vista, Calif., Rex and Carolyn Repaire, Rex John and Kirra, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Marc Repaire, Rene and Karina of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; a dear uncle, Romaine Repaire of San Rafael, Calif.; sisters and spouses, Mary and Butch Hill of Georgia, Lynda and Rich Hopkins of Terra Alta, and Anne and Phil Raney of Oak Hill; brother and spouse, Rich and Evon Repaire of Shawnee, Kan.; as well as many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
