Viola Stidham Collins

Viola Stidham Collins, 90, of Oak Hill, died Dec.13, 2013, at Fayette Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Fayetteville.

Born July 1, 1923, at Hazard, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Allen D. and Rosella Bowman Stidham. She also was preceded in death by a son, Carl C. Collins.

Viola was a homemaker and attended the Church of God.

A graveside committal service, followed by burial, was held Dec. 16 at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating.

Gary Lee Hanshew

Gary Lee Hanshew, 65, of Green Sulphur Springs, died Dec. 19, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, following a short battle with cancer.

Born April 28, 1948, at Danese, he was the son of Lillian Shuck Hanshew of Green Sulphur Springs and the late Roy P. Hanshew.

Gary graduated from Meadow Bridge High School in 1966 and was of the Baptist faith.

He proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Coral Sea CV-43 in the Viet Nam War.

Following his service in the Navy, he went to work as a coal miner for 13 years. He then was an electrician for Meadow Gold Dairy for 5 years and retired after 16 years as an electrician for U.S. Can.

He was a member of V.F.W. Post #6506 in Rosedale, Md., and a member of the Jeptah Masonic Lodge #222 in Essex, Md.

Upon his retirement, Gary came home to the West Virginia hills he loved.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: his loving wife of 41 years, Gail McQuain Hanshew; three sons of whom Gary was so proud, Kevin (Rosa) of Lincoln, Del., Mike (Debbie) of Meadow Bridge and Patrick (Alicia) of Green Sulphur Springs; daughter, Barbie Coffie of North Carolina; brothers, Roy (Audrey) of Danese and Chris (Ersie) of Green Sulphur Springs; sisters, Marge Parker of Orlando, Fla., and Carol Moore (John) of Danese; and grandchildren Whitley, Evan, Mike, John, Jacob, Johnathan and Cody.

Services were Dec. 23, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., with Jimmy Fleshman officiating. Burial followed in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville. Military honors were conducted by the American Legion Post #32 in Beckley.

James Patrick Holcomb

James Patrick Holcomb, 47, Kiev, Ukraine, died Aug. 23, 2013, at Fayetteville.

Born Dec. 7, 1965, at South Charleston, he was the son of Nancy Eades Holcomb of Oak Hill, and the late Raymond Holcomb.

James was a television weatherman and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: his wife, Masha of Kiev, Ukraine; sons, Zane Patrick and Greyson, both of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and daughters, Jillian of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Nicole of Kiev, Ukraine.

Mr. Holcomb was cremated. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date in Chattanooga.

Jo Ann Jones

Mrs. Jo Ann Jones, 68, of Blacksburg, Va., formerly of Mahan, died Dec. 15, 2013, after an extended illness.

Born Feb. 13, 1945, in Mahan, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Oakley Kitchen Mack.

Surviving: her husband, Robert M.  Jones; son, Robert Gregory Jones of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Doris Marcum of Mahan and Claudetta Johnson of Louisa, Ky.; brothers, Kenneth Salter of Beckley, Darrell Salter of Charlotte, N.C., and Dr. Hobert Mack of Alum Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

Service was Dec. 18 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Dr. John Anderson officiating. Burial followed at Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Ralph J. ‘Bozo’ Keffer Jr.

Ralph J. “Bozo” Keffer Jr. of Charleston, formerly of Cannelton, died Dec. 20, 2013.

Born Aug. 16, 1959, in Montgomery, he was the son of the late Ralph J. Keffer Sr. and Colleen Boyd Keffer Buster.

He was a certified electrician and an avid member of Alcoholics Anonymous and he was very proud of his accomplishments.

Surviving: daughter, Shawna Marie Keffer of Buckhannon; sisters, Sue Cottrell and Patsy Keeney, both of Cannelton; and brothers, Thomas Mullins of Oak Hill and David Mullins of Cannelton.

Family and friends visited Dec. 23 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery.

Cecil Clarence Labus Jr.

Cecil Clarence Labus Jr., 62, of Hico, died Dec. 19, 2013.

There will not be any viewing or funeral. He was cremated.

Mona Ann Legg

Mona Ann Legg died Dec. 17, 2013.

Mona was born on Sept. 4, 1932, in Fayette County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herb and Muriel Atha; brothers, Don, Herb and Charlie; sisters, Libby and Susie; her cherished husband, Buz; her infant twin sons, Herb and Howard; her beloved son, Gregory; and her precious great-grandson, Jack Redin.

Most of her days were spent on Saturday Road, where she was cherished by her family and community.

Mona was a loyal daughter and a cherished wife. She was a loving and beloved mother and grandmother. She was a farmer, gardener, cook, homemaker and musician. Her hard-working calloused, beautiful hands were never idle.

Mona was a longtime, honored member of Horseshoe Baptist Church and she loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Surviving: brother, Bob Atha; sister, Linda; sons, Harold “Buzzy” and wife Betty Legg and Bradley and wife Julie Legg; daughters, Tammy and husband Tom Blake, and Darlene Cole; daughter-in-law, Sophia Legg; grandsons, Jason and wife Crystal Blake, Brandon Cole and Bradley Legg Jr.; granddaughters, April and husband Lonnie Redin, Jill Blake, Mandy and husband John Conger, Melissa and husband Billy Shirley, Haley Legg, Rebecca Legg and Jasmine Legg; and great-grandchildren, Shyla Blake, Lydia Redin, Elijah Conger, Mona Conger, Izzy Blake, Cyrus Taylor and Max Shirley.

Funeral services were Dec. 21 at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Pastor Joe Shaffer and Pastor Tom Blake officiating. Burial followed at Martin Cemetery in Ramsey.

Friends may call at the funeral home chapel 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 20, 2013.

Brenda Sue Jack Plumley

Brenda Sue Jack Plumley, 67, of Page, died Dec. 17, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born May 1, 1946, at Robson, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Bertie Marie Williams Jack.

Brenda was was an in-home healthcare provider.

She was a Protestant.

Surviving: daughter, Phyllis Plumley of Page; companion, Johnny Brown; sisters, Betty Taylor of Robson and Linda Williams of Gatewood; grandchildren, Terri Sanchez Adkins and husband Josiah of Hilltop, and Samantha Jean Holbrook, Nellie Marie Vickers and Katelynn Audrey Humphrey, all of Page; six great-grandchildren; the Brown family; and many very close friends who were like her own family.

Funeral services were on Dec. 21 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Jim Elmore officiating. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Donald Preston ‘Don’ Renfro

Donald Preston “Don” Renfro, 79, of Maple Fork, WV, died Dec. 19, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born Aug. 16, 1934, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Blaine Preston and Mae Matheny Renfro.

He was the retired owner of Hunting and Fishing Warehouse at Maple Fork, and formerly worked as a welder at Long-Airdox Co. in Oak Hill and Perry-Hylton at Mabscott.

Don was a member of the Kilsyth Free Will Baptist Church and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving: his wife of 62 years, Pat Stone Renfro; daughters, Donna Lee Adkins of Beckley, Debra McDaniel and husband Dave of Kearnersville, N.C., and Denise Renfro of Maple Fork; his grandson, Donald Shuck, who served as his caregiver; sisters, Lyda Kessler and husband Tom of Maple Fork and Eileen Ewing of Beckley; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Dec. 23 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. Bill Bennett and Rev. Jim Sturgill officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

William Ernest ‘Buzzy’ Rhodes Jr.

William Ernest “Buzzy” Rhodes Jr., 82, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 20, 2013, at BARH in Beckley.

Born Feb. 11, 1931, at Summerlee, he was the son of the late William E. and Minnie Cody Rhodes. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Marcelline Mullins Rhodes; by daughters, Pamela Rhodes and Nancy F. Thomas; by a son-in-law, Jefferson Lee Davis; and by his sisters, Virginia O’Boyle, Estel Matullis, Lorene Duncan, Josephine Rhodes and Genevieve McMillion.

Buzzy was an electrician in the coal industry and a member of the UMWA.

Surviving: his daughter, Barbara Bell and her husband, Teddy W., of Oak Hill; stepdaughter, Peggy Davis of Grandview; grandchildren, Lori Livengood and husband Nathan, T.W. Bell and wife Regina, Shannon Dixon and husband Jason, “Hard Rock” Thomas and wife Stacey, Jason Rhodes and wife Lori, Jeff Davis and wife Lori and Jerry Lee Davis; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Menei of Mount Hope, Edna Criss and Georgia Fisher, both of Oak Hill, and Irene Elkins of Ohio; and a son-in-law, Roscoe Thomas of Summerlee.

In honoring Buzzy’s wishes he will be cremated and a service will be held at a later date.

Bessie Jean Young Withrow

Bessie Jean Young Withrow, 82, of Oak Hill, died after a long illness on Dec. 18, 2013.

She was born Dec. 2, 1931, at Mammoth.

Bess was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was greatly loved and will be missed by many. She loved to visit with her children and grandchildren.

She also enjoyed reading and working at Cook’s Department Store in Oak Hill.

Surviving: her husband, Jewell Withrow; her children, Larry Withrow and his wife, Gail, of Fayetteville, Sherri Morris and her husband, David W., of Oak Hill, and Kerri Wriston and her husband, Ermel, of Kincaid; her grandchildren, Kristy Withrow Naternicola, Lindsay Morris Williamson, Jarred Morris, Casey Grubb, and Jayme Grubb; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Brooke and Chesney.
