Douglas Montgomery Burgess

Douglas Montgomery Burgess, 67, of West Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Oak Hill, died May 22, 2010, at JFK Medical Center.

Born Nov. 23, 1942, in Glen Jean, he was the son of the late Marvin Burgess and Loraine Elizabeth Dorsey Burgess.

Surviving: his wife of 32 years, Clarissa Jo Cunningham Burgess; sons, Douglas “Monty” Burgess II of Cleveland, Ohio, Paul Cunningham of Jupiter, Fla., Benjamin Burgess of Ft. Myers Fla., and Michael Burgess of West Palm Beach, Fla.; daughter, Amanda Burgess of West Palm Beach, Fla.; brothers, Dale Burgess and Darrell Burgess, both of Buckhannon; sister, Debby Taylor of West Palm Beach, Fla.; nine cherished grandchildren, two nieces, six nephews, four great-nieces, two great-nephews and his aunts and uncles.

There will be no service.

Primo Joseph Cavallini

Primo Joseph Cavallini, 84, of Oak Hill, died May 29, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born July 22, 1925, at Luzerene, Pa., he was the son of the late Ozoo Cavallini and Augusta DiClementi Cavallini Magrini. A son, Mark Cavallini, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Cavallini was a retired upholsterer for University of Delaware and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving: his wife, Virginia Helen Huff Cavallini; son, Mario Cavallini and a daughter, Mary Ann Cavallini, both of New Jersey; stepsons, Donald Treadway of Fayetteville and Kevin Treadway of Beckley; stepdaughter, Kathy Treadway of Fayetteville; sister, Yvonne Hricak of Hershey, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

There was no local service. Mr. Cavallini was taken to the R. E. Foard-Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St. Newark, DE 19711 (phone 302-731-4627) for completion of funeral arrangements.

Roger Lee Davis

Roger Lee Davis, 61, of Scarbro, died June 5, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Feb. 25, 1949, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Vaden and Bonnie Coleman Davis. A brother, Vaden “Chick” Davis also preceded him in death.

Roger was a 1967 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill. He was a member of Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. and A.M. and Sewell Chapter No. 24 R.A.M.. 

Surviving: daughter, Amanda Davis of Oak Hill; son, Joesph R. Davis and wife Melonie of Kenley, N.C.;  his former wife, Marjorie Lou Hatcher Davis; grandchildren, Jacob, Danielle, Maci and Paisley; aunts, Lessie Wriston of Oak Hill and Dana Wriston of Fayetteville; and his best friend, Mike Walton.

Mr. Davis was cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 1 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill.

Jennifer L. DeHart

Jennifer L. DeHart, of Meadville, Pa., formerly of Oak Hill, died March 11, 2010, after a courageous five-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Born Feb. 15, 1966, in Beckley, she grew up in Oak Hill enjoying the outdoors, gardening, and making many devoted friends. It was here she attended Oak Hill High School, graduating in 1984 as valedictorian.

Jennifer had a lifelong passion for protecting the environment and promoting sustainable living. After her graduation from Emory and Henry College in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, she continued at Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning her master’s degree and Ph.D. respectfully. She held faculty and research positions focusing on a major project funded by NASA to better measure, predict, and understand greenhouse gas emissions at the local to regional level.

Jennifer embraced the Meadville area in 2001 when she started serving as an assistant professor of environmental science at Allegheny College, teaching courses on a variety of topics including climate change, environmental research methods, and sustainable energy. As a college professor, Jennifer enthusiastically educated future generations of leaders about the importance of environmental sustainability.

Combining her devotion to teaching and the community, Jennifer collaborated with Allegheny students to conduct a greenhouse gas emissions inventory for the city of Meadville. Dedicated to advancing the local foods movement, she spearheaded the revitalization of the farmers’ market at the Meadville Market House. She worked tirelessly to develop a strong network of area farmers and community members, ensuring the market would continue to thrive for many years to come.

Jennifer is missed but celebrated by her father, Pat DeHart of Oak Hill; her brother, Keith DeHart and wife Maureen of Chesapeake, Va.; an aunt and uncle, Judy and Vernard Sears, and an aunt, Patricia Brammer, all of the Beckley area; and many loving cousins. Preceding Jennifer in death was her mother, Betty DeHart.

A memorial walk and service were held June 5 at Price Lake Picnic area on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Boone, N.C. Service will also be held again at Allegheny College during the fall 2010 semester.

Joe E. Delridge

Joe E. Delridge, 78, of Heath, Ohio, died June 1, 2010, at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus.

Born Dec. 28, 1931, in Whipple, he was the son of the late Paul and Anna (Bubics) Delridge. He also was preceded in death by an infant son, Roger; and by four brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Delridge attended Oak Ridge High School and was a veteran of the United States Army.

He worked for Chevrolet in Parma, Ohio, and enjoyed playing golf. In 1991 he moved from Cleveland to Heath to be closer to his daughter and family.

Surviving: his wife of 50 years, Cecelia Jean (Boone-Gillenwater) Delridge; daughter, Linda (John) Obora of Pataskala; grandsons, Jack and Grant; and a sister, Elizabeth Jewel of Beckley.

Ernest Ray Dickinson

Ernest Ray Dickinson, 63, of Oak Hill, died June 1, 2010, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Born Sept. 17, 1946, at Mount Hope, he was the son of the late William Ray and Florence Elizabeth Perry Dickinson.

Ernie grew up at Kimberly, and went to Montgomery High School. He was a disabled coal miner and also a former employee of Long Airdox in Oak Hill. He was a proud member of Local Union 8843 and the UMWA and a former member of the White Oak Country Club.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served from 1965 to 1969.

One of his greatest joys was taking these grandchildren to breakfast at McDonald’s or to the local golf course to play golf.

Surviving: his beloved wife of 44 years, Wanda Reese Dickinson; daughter, Brigitte A. Chandler of Beckley; son, William E. Dickinson of Oak Hill; brothers, Charles “Chuck” Dickinson of Smithers and Frank “Mac” Dickinson of Riverview, Fla.; and six wonderful grandchildren who meant the world to him, Brittany and Brandon Chandler, Austin, Kylie, Garrick and Alik Dickinson.

A memorial service was held on June 3 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with his good friend Pastor Rudell Bloomfield officiating.

Rosalie Dickinson

Rosalie Dickinson, 86, formerly of Oak Hill and Mt. Carbon, died May 31, 2010, at Golden Living Center in Glasgow.

Born Sept. 20, 1923, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Ethel Stanley Dickinson. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Dickinson, Bobbie Dickinson, Donald Dickinson and William Ray Dickinson; and her sister, Mary Evelyn Veazey.

Surviving: son, Bobby Pat Veazey Sr. of Falls View; brother, Frank “Pikie” T. Dickinson of Mt. Carbon; grandson, Bobby Pat Veazey Jr. and his wife, Julie, of Colorado Springs, Colo; great-granddaughters, Kathryn Renee Veazey and Courtney Ann Veazey, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; special former daughter-in-law, Sharon Ann Hall; and many nieces and nephews.

Carl Gibson

Carl J. Gibson died peacefully in his sleep June 7, 2010.

At his request he will be cremated. A memorial service will be at a later date.

Gwendolyn Marie McGraw Griffith

Gwendolyn Marie McGraw Griffith, 91, died at her home on June 5, 2010, following a long illness.

Born Dec. 12, 1918, at Clute, now Meadow Bridge, Marie was the first daughter born to Etsie Bryan McGraw and Grace Mae Cozort McGraw. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Honus Wagner (Chub) Griffith; her brother, Roy B. McGraw; her sister, Maxine McGraw Russell; brother-in-law, Paul Kay Russell; niece, Marcia McGraw; and great-great-niece, Madison Furrow.

Marie was a former member of the Meadow Bridge Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Rainelle United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Honus Wagner “Chub,” were faithful members of the Rainelle United Methodist Church for many years.

Marie graduated from Meadow Bridge High School in 1937. She attended Concord College and earned her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career at Sturgeon Branch. She taught at Beelick Knob, Meadow Bridge (across from the current Meadow Bridge Missionary Baptist Church), Bellwood, and East Rainelle. She was a substitute teacher at Crichton, Rainelle, and East Rainelle. She taught for 36 years and substituted for 18 years.

Marie will be sadly missed by family, community, Madeline Martin and the students she loved and taught over the years, especially the Bellwood gang, who honored her with a party on Aug. 2, 1997.

Surviving: brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Mildred McGraw of Meadow Bridge; sister, Shirley McGraw of Meadow Bridge; sister-in-law, Louise McGraw of Beaver; nephew, Jerry D. McGraw; nieces, Paula Kay (Sean) Mullen, Nancy (Warren) Reuschel, Janie (Greg) Moomaw and Teresa (Jim) Warner; 17 great-nieces and nephews; 16 great-great-nieces and nephews; and special nephew, William “Bud” Harmon, and family.

Funeral services were June 8 at the Rainelle United Methodist Church with Rev. Stanley Clark officiating. Closing prayer was delivered by JW Puckett. Entombment followed in the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum in Clintonville.

Margaret Ann Vargo Miklos

Margaret Ann Vargo Miklos, 85, of Mount Hope, W.Va. died June 2, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born July 4, 1924, at Oswald, she was the daughter of the late C. Mike and Barbara Salago Vargo. Her husband, Joseph Miklos; son, Michael J. Miklos; brothers, Joe, Mike, Paul and Johnny Vargo; and a sister, Anna Metro, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Miklos was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill, and was a resident of Kilsyth for many years.

She was a retired lab technician, having worked for Appalachian Regional Hospital and Raleigh General Hospital, both in Beckley.

Surviving: daughter, Theresa Smith and husband Tommy of Mount Hope; grandchildren, Angela Smith, Michael Miklos, Jeff Miklos and Kelly Vincent; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were June 5 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope, with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Lorenzo Mira

Lorenzo Mira, 87, of Oak Hill, died May 31, 2010.

Born Nov. 4, 1922, he was the son of the late Thomas and Marianna Mira. Lorenzo also was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Deborah White.

Lorenzo was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was the owner of the Royal Spaghetti House for over 50 years.

Surviving: his wife, JoAnn Mira of Oak Hill; daughter, Marianna Mira Holbrook and husband Curtis of Oak Hill; sons, Rick Ellison of Hilltop and James Ellison of Cunard; and grandson, John Walter Lorenzo Kania of Oak Hill.

Services were June 4 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Entombment followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Roger Dale Tomlin

Roger Dale Tomlin, 63, of Fayetteville, died May 31, 2010, at the Beckley VA Medical Center following a long battle with complications from Agent Orange.

Born March 26, 1947, at Fayetteville, he was the son of Geraldine Craft Tomlin of Fayetteville, and the late Leonard Arnold Tomlin. He also was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Arnold and Goldie Woolwine Tomlin; maternal grandparents, Henry and Myrtle Shieler Craft; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Tomlin; and brother-in-law, Ken Spencer.

Roger served his country in the U.S. Army. During his tour of duty in Vietnam he received the Bronze Star.

He was a former coal miner and had worked at Cannelton Industries and Fayette Engineering.

Surviving: his wife of 36 years, Elizabeth Anne “Libby” Spencer Tomlin of Fayetteville; sons, Roger Dale Tomlin II and wife Barbara of Fayetteville, and Ethan Tomlin at home; daughters, Anne Akers and husband Josh of Oak Hill, Autumn Iannamorelli and fiancé Brandon Jones of Sissonville; mother, Geraldine Craft Tomlin of Fayetteville; sisters, Judy Johnson and husband John of Rockport, Ind., and Tana Morris and husband Lonnie of Prosperity; brothers, Eddie Tomlin and wife Terry of Fayetteville, David Tomlin and fiancée Pam of Oak Hill, and Mike Tomlin and wife Sherry of Fayetteville; and grandchildren, Eric Buckland, Dustin Buckland, Logan Ritter, Issac Tomlin, Spencer Tomlin, Sierrah Ritter, River Gilkerson, Willow Tomlin, Damien Iannamorelli, and Skyler Gilkerson.

Graveside services were June 5 at the Woolwine-Tomlin Cemetery near his home with Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn officiating.

Thelma Pauline Warren

Thelma Pauline Warren, 86, died June 5, 2010.

Born June 1, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Cleveland and Ola Kincaid Holly. Thelma was married on April 23, 1946, to Seibert E. Warren Jr., who preceded her in death on July 2, 1995. She also was preceded in death by brothers, Edgar Lee Holly, Lacy Estil Holly and wife Wanda, and Bobby Glen Holly and wife Nancy; and sister-in-law, Scottie Holly.

A lifelong resident of Long Branch, she was a 1942 graduate of Pax High School.

Being a very kind, generous, and loving lady to her family and friends would mark her years of life.

Surviving: her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Carol and Paul Nichols of Point Pleasant; granddaughter, Heather Noel Olin and her husband, Dustin, of Roanoke, Va.; grandson, Andrew Paul Nichols and his wife, Kristin, of Huntington; great-grandson, Joshua Andrew Nichols of Huntington; brother, Joseph Cleveland Holly Jr. of Man; sister, Zelma Ann “Tootsie” Holly of Long Branch; and sisters-in-law, Celia Williams of Fayetteville, Joyce Spade of Mount Hope, and Marilyn Patton of Hilliard, Ohio; and many special nephews, nieces, and friends.

Thelma had a passion for flowers. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant or share a flower with someone in her memory.

Funeral services were June 7 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Mount Hope, with Richard Allen officiating. Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Sally Lou Jarrell Webb

Sally Lou Jarrell Webb, of Lansing, formerly of Peachtree, Naoma, died June 3, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Crystal Kincaid.

Born Jan. 9, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Norma Clay Webb. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Webb, and a brother, Ricky Jarrell.

She was a lifelong Christian and a very loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Surviving: daughters, Mrs. Ray “Crystal” Kincaid of Lansing, Mrs. Bill “Ethel” Cole of South Carolina and Mrs. James “Norma” Dickens of Naoma; sisters, Brenda Spencer and husband Bill of Stickney, Teresa Jarrell of Beckley, Annette Blair of Sissonville, and Charlotte Jarrell of Beckley; brothers, Jody Jarrell, Jerry Jarrell and wife Mary, and Ralph Jarrell and wife Glenna, all of Stickney, Curtis Jarrell of Glen Daniel, Teddy Jarrell and wife Michelle of Beckley, and Gary Jarrell and wife Joann of Seng Creek; 11 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. 

Services were June 6 at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with Pastor Ed Bolon officiating. Burial followed in the Webb Family Cemetery at Naoma.

Roy ‘Shorty’ D. Withrow

Roy “Shorty” D. Withrow, 82, of Scarbro, died June 3, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Dec. 24, 1927, at Scarbro, he was the son of the late Fred and Elizabeth Blake Withrow. His wife, Elizabeth Ann “Sis” Bokovitz Withrow; and an infant daughter, JoAnn, also preceded him in death.

He was a 1946 graduate of Oak Hill High School.

Shorty was a long-time employee of New River Coal Company, an active member of the UMWA and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a former board member and volunteer of the White Oak PSD and helped organize the local Adopt-A-Highway program.

Mr. Withrow was a founding member and board member of the New River Health Association and a member of the Plateau Club. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and tolerated spending time with his family.

Surviving: sons, David Withrow and wife Donna of Scarbro, Dale Withrow of Battle Creek, Mich., John Withrow and wife Debbie of Oak Hill, and Steve Withrow of Scarbro; daughters, Mary Gregory and husband Gordon of Prosperity and Carol Withrow of Rockledge, Fla.; brothers, Fred Withrow and wife Melba of Garland, Texas, Leslie Withrow and wife Dorothy of Riverview, Mich., and Ron Withrow and wife Samantha of Rockledge, Fla.; sister, Lora “Pud” Winner and husband Bill of Rockledge, Fla.; grandchildren, Amanda Withrow of San Francisco, Calif., Lori Jo Withrow and husband Jeff of Los Angeles, Calif., Scott Withrow and wife Liz of Fairdale, and Sean Withrow and Mary Beth Withrow, both of Scarbro; great-granddaughter, Faith; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were June 7 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.
