Roger Reed

Roger Reed, 65, of Kentucky, formerly of Oak Hill, died March 24, 2013.

Thelma M. Riser

Thelma M. Riser, 71, of Oak Hill, died March 21, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill after a long illness.

Born Feb. 5, 1942, in Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Lucille Taylor Buckland. She also was preceded in death by his first husband, Roy Treadway; a great-granddaughter, Caroline; a brother, Edward Buckland; and a sister, Anna Mae Treadway.

Thelma was a sales clerk at Big Lots and attended and was baptized at the Cunard Baptist Church.

She had been a resident of Fayette Continuous Care since January 2005.

Surviving: her loving husband, James “Jim” Riser Jr. of Oak Hill; her son, Roy Treadway and his wife, Lavon, of Oak Hill; daughters, Shirl Vaughn and her husband, Richard, of Oak Hill, and Kathy Landers and her husband, Roger, of Fayetteville; stepson, Jay Riser and his wife, Michele, of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer and husband Greg, Tina, R.J., Jessica, Richard and his wife, Dorothy, Rebecca “Becky” and her husband, Ben; stepgrandchildren, Taylor and Jordan; great-grandchildren, Eric, Faith, Jasper, Liberty and Josiah; and brothers, Tommy Buckland and wife Linda, Charlie Buckland and wife Kathy, all of Fayetteville, and Lee Buckland and his wife, Judy, of Oak Hill; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were March 25 at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Gary Lilly officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Dr. James H. Shelton

Dr. James H. Shelton, 96, a highly respected dentist in Oak Hill for over 60 years, died of natural causes at home on March 19, 2013.

Born Jan. 13, 1917, at Lockwood, he was the son of the late Eddie Victor and Flora A. McCutchen Shelton.

Dr. Shelton was a father of four, grandfather to 14 and great-grandfather to 11, all who survive. He leaves a legacy that he and his beloved Mary created prior to her preceding him in death in September 2005.

Dr. Shelton’s passion was Lions Club International and he celebrated his 50-year Monarch membership in the Oak Hill club in 2007. He served as club secretary for more than 20 years, and he served in multiple prominent positions throughout Lions Clubs International among which were Oak Hill club president, District Governor, International Councilor and Sight Foundation Chairman just to name a few.

As a dentist he was proud to have cared for four generations of some families.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Oak Hill, for over 60 years where they brought up their children.  

Surviving: sister, Margaret Summers of Lockwood; daughter, Joan Shelton Whanger and husband Tom of Newport News, Va., with their four children and five grandchildren; Joan’s twin, James H. Shelton II, and wife Barbara who live between homes in Florida and Indiana and have two daughters and two grandchildren; son, Dr. Charles Shelton and wife Millie who reside in Oak Hill and have three children and two grandchildren; son, Richard Shelton and wife Cathy and their five children and three grandchildren, who all live in Newport News.

The family received visitors at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, on March 22, and funeral services were at the funeral home on March 23 with Pastor Bryan Knight and Dr. Charles Miller officiating. Entombment followed at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum beside his beloved Mary.
