Robert Edward Elliott
Robert Edward Elliott, 89, of Rainelle, died June 29, 2012, at his home following a long illness.
Born March 7, 1923, in Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late Harold and Lola Scudder Elliott. In March of this year, he also was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Jordan Elliott; and also by a daughter, Theresa Joyce Clark; and his sister, Maxine Heaster.
Bob was retired from the transportation industry.
He served in the United States Marines during World War II, an opportunity of which he was very proud.
He was a member of the Sewell Valley Baptist Church in Rainelle. On moving back to Rainelle after retirement, he became active in the community, helping with the Greenbrier Hills Golf Club and working diligently on the city park that was named Bob Elliott City Park in honor of his efforts to improve the park.
He was a member and former commander of the Rainelle VFW Post #4484. Bob loved his family and serving others.
Surviving: son, James Rodger Elliott of Rainelle; daughters, Janet Elliott of Virginia, Sheila Shifflett of Maryland and Cynthia White of Mt. Hope; grandchildren, Michael Sill of Mt. Hope, Brandi Arthur of Arizona, and Justin and Jordan; and great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn Sill and Leah Arthur.
Services were July 2 at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Kenneth Brackman officiating. Burial followed in the Sewell Valley Cemetery at Rainelle.

James Donald Ervin, 50, of Scarbro, died June 24, 2012.

Mrs. Ruth Marie Leftwich Fuqua
Mrs. Ruth Marie Leftwich Fuqua, 88, of Kimberly, died June 17, 2012, at the Montgomery General Hospital.
Mrs. Fuqua was born Feb. 11, 1924, daughter of the late Samuel and Ethel B. Leftwich. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Fuqua; stepmother, Pearl Leftwich; grandmother, Laura Brown; and aunt and uncle, Berkley and Katherine Brown.
She was an active and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery until her health declined. She attended North Carolina State College, WV State College and graduated from Bluefield State Teachers College.
Mrs. Fuqua was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, NAACP, Fayette County Black Caucus, Naomi Chapter #10 Order of the Eastern Star where she was a Past Worthy Matron, and Past Grand Trustee of Electa Prince Hall Grand Chapter, OES.
She was a retired school teacher for Fayette County Board of Education, having taught at Beards Fork and Powellton schools.
Surviving: cousins, Gwen L. Jones and Rowena Jones of Richmond, Va.; caregiver, Barbara Brockman and family of Kimberly; nephews, Samuel and Julia Ferguson of Columbus, Ohio, and Ronnie and Jackie Ferguson of Marion, Ill.
A celebration of Mrs. Fuqua’s life was held June 21 at the First Baptist Church of Kimberly with Rev. Douglas Mullins officiating. Burial followed in Meadow Haven Memorial Park at Ingram Branch. Order of Eastern Star Rite was held.
