Velma Jane Flint

Velma Jane Flint, 70, of Stanaford, died at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, on March 27, 2014.

Born April 18, 1943, in Laurel Creek, she was the daughter of the late Roy Smith and Mary Osborne Smith. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Verna Smith Ewing; and by brothers, Leroy Smith, Lloyd Dale Smith, and Andrew Smith.

Mrs. Flint was retired from Bob Evans Restaurant in Beckley as a waitress.

She was a member of the First Brethren Church of Oak Hill. Mrs. Flint had made her home at Stanaford for most of her life.

Surviving: her husband of 17 years, James Flint; a son, Mike Pomeroy and his wife, Kim, of Beckley; stepchildren, James Flint Jr. of Manassas, Va., Ralph Flint of Culloden, Tina Ebert and her husband, John, of Nebraska, Douglas Flint of Oak Hill, Charles Flint and his wife, Kristi, of Mount Hope, and Michael Flint and his wife, Traci, of Oak Hill; a brother, James Smith and his wife, Deloris, of Clawson, Mich.; sisters, Violet Ewing of Prince and Nila Rondina of Sterling Heights, Mich.; grandchildren, Ian Michael Pomeroy and Logan Birchfield of Beckley; 23 stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Betty Smith of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., and Rhonda Smith of Prince.

Funeral services were conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on March 30, with Rev. Daniel Legg officiating. Entombment followed at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.

Donations of sympathy may be made to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, in memory of Mrs. Flint.

Jane Marie Elkins Gaas

Jane Marie Elkins Gaas, of Oak Hill, WV, died March 28, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital, with her family by her side after battling a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Born Feb. 13, 1960, in Petoskey, Mich., Jane was a daughter of Max Elkins of Oak Hill and the late Mary Elkins. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Ricky Thomas Elkins on Feb. 7, 2003, and Dean Morgan Elkins on March 28, 2011; and her paternal and maternal grandparents.

Jane was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Jane attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, and graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1978, where she was a member of the Oak Hill High School Band. Upon graduation she attended Morris Harvey University.

Jane worked at The Fayette Tribune, Plateau Printing and Office Supplies, Inc., and her last job was as executive administrator of a law firm in Grand Junction, Colo.

In her spare time she enjoyed playing the piano and spending time with family.

Surviving, in addition to her father: her sisters, Sandy Elkins Kidd of Oak Hill and Carla Elkins Archuleta  and husband Chris of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister-in-law, Sheryl Elkins of Oak Hill; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and 20 nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial was April 1 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Carlos Melocoton Jr. officiating. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Oak Hill.
