Nadean Alice Todd Adkins

Nadean Alice Todd Adkins, 66, of Thurmond, died Jan. 25, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Oct. 28, 1945, at Thayer, she was the daughter of the late Arville and Lilly Ward Todd. A sister, Drema Young, and brothers, Kenneth Todd and Jerry Ward, also preceded her in death.

She attended the Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle and was a homemaker.

Surviving: her husband, Donald Franklin Adkins; her children, Deborah Richardson and husband Steve of Beckley, Dwayne Adkins of Scarbro, Jamie Adkins and wife Patty of Thayer, Kathy Murray of Mount Hope and Angela Adkins of Mt. Alto; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Jan. 28 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Robert Isaacs officiating. Burial was at the Harrah Cemetery on Backus Mountain.

Melissa Dawne Blue

Melissa Dawne Blue, 40, of Arlington, Texas, died Jan. 22, 2012, after a long illness.

Melissa was born Sept. 28, 1971, in Oak Hill, the daughter of Theresa Ann Jeffers and John McCarty Blue.

Surviving: her mother, Theresa Ann Jeffers; a sister, Meredith Blue of Arlington, Texas; a brother, Matthew Blue and wife Amber of Dickson, Tenn.; nieces, Lensey Torres and Chloe Blue; nephew, Ryan Blue; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Celebration of life was Jan. 28 at Arlington Park Baptist Church, Arlington, Texas.

Christine Gibson

Christine Gibson, 58, of Scarbro, died Jan. 22, 2012 at her home.

Born Dec. 7, 1953, in Welch, she was the daughter of the late Shannon Mullins and Eula Mae Lane.

Mrs. Gibson was beloved wife, loving grandmother, and cherished mother. She enjoyed her garden, doing yard work, and mainly spending time with her family. She also loved to go fishing and playing with her grandchildren whom she adored.

Surviving: her husband, Lowell T. Gibson Sr. at home; sons, Lowell T. Gibson Jr. and wife Kristy of Daniels, and Michael Wayne Gibson and wife Jennifer of Lester; daughter, Lisa Price and husband Matthew of Mt. Hope; brothers, Cecil Mullins, Johnny Mullins, and Mack Mullins; sisters, Shelby Sink, Dorothy Mitchem, Georgie Mullins, Wanda Radford, Nellie Osborne and her husband, Charles, and Sissy Mullins; and grandchildren, Brandon Gibson, Tristan Price, Halie Gibson, Aloryn Price, Seth Price, Alyssa Gibson, and Thax Gibson.

Services to celebrate the life of Christine were conducted Jan. 26 at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum B on Harper Road in Beckley with Pastor Richard Walker officiating. Interment followed in the cemetery.

John Loren Hess Sr.

John Loren Hess Sr., 77, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 28, 2012.

Born Jan. 3, 1935, he was the son of the late Loren Delbert Hess and Grace Alma Johnson. John also was preceded in death by his sisters, Iwelda, Joan, Fawn, and Sue.

John loved fishing and being outdoors. He was employed as a truck driver by a coal company.

He was a member of the Protestant faith.

Surviving: his wife, Barbara Humpries Hess of Oak Hill; daughter, Cheryl Hess of Oak Hill; son, John L. Hess Jr. of Huntington; grandchildren, Brailey, Linda, and Karah; brother, Paul Hess of Ashley, Ohio; and sister, Judy Williams of South Charleston.

Services will be held at a later date.

Mona Renee Atkins Hutteman

Mona Renee Atkins Hutteman, 61, of Sweeneysburg Road, Beckley, died Jan. 26, 2012, after a 2-year battle with ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease.

She was preceded in death by her father, Marshal Atkins, and stepfather, Lloyd Stover.

Mrs. Hutteman attended the New Beginning Church of God in Glen Jean. 

Surviving: her husband of 41 years, Henry Robert Hutteman; her mother, Norma Jewel Stover of Beckley; sons, Henry Russell Hutteman of El Paso, Texas, and Thomas Raymond Hutteman of Ft. Myers, Fla.; daughter, Sarah Ruhama Hawley of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; grandchildren, Julie, Cristain, and Jaden Hawley, and Kailey, Reagan, and Monica Hutteman; and brothers, Ernie, Randy, and Karrol Stover.

Funeral services were Jan. 31 at the New Beginning Church of God, Glen Jean, with Pastor John Pack officiating. Burial followed in Sam Davis Cemetery, off Maple Fork Road.

Virginia ‘Ginney’ Wheeler Jayne

Virginia “Ginney” Wheeler Jayne of Oak Hill died Jan. 29, 2012.

Born Feb. 11, 1925, at Fenwick, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Harrah Wheeler. Her husband, William Howard Jayne Jr.; grandson, Jason M. Smith; three brothers and four sisters also preceded her in death.

Ginney was a graduate of Richwood High School and Kanawha Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Charleston.

A resident of Oak Hill since 1971, Ginney was a retired registered nurse from FMRS at Fayetteville and had previously worked at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

She volunteered at the American Red Cross for many years after her retirement. She served as chairperson of the Fayette County Red Cross.

She was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church and the Three Fs group.

Surviving: son, William H. Jayne III and wife Jane of Dove Canyon, Calif.; daughter, Mary F. “Missey” Smith and husband George Jr. of Mount Hope; grandsons, William H. Jayne IV and wife Courtney, George F. Smith III and wife April, and Christopher P. Jayne and wife Nicole; and great-grandchildren, Owen Jayne and Leila Jayne Smith.

Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles D. Miller and Minister Ken Overdorf officiating. Entombment will be at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill on Thursday, Feb. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross, Fayette-Nicholas Chapter, PO Box 355, Oak Hill WV 25901.

James Wilhite Kidd

James Wilhite Kidd, 82, of Lexington, Va., died suddenly in his home on

Jan. 20, 2012. 

Born Sept. 15, 1929, in Kaymoor, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Ruth W. Kidd, formerly of Fayetteville.

He was a graduate of the Peddie School, Class of 1948, and an alumnus of Washington and Lee University, Class of 1952, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity.

He was also a graduate of the Army Language School at the Presidio in Monterey, Calif., and served with the U.S. military in Korea as an intelligence specialist.

Mr. Kidd had a long career in sales and marketing, most of it in San Francisco. He particularly enjoyed his years with Nortel where he functioned as national accounts sales manager. At one point he was named Nortel’s top national producer.

He retired in 1990 and moved from San Francisco to Orcas Island, Wash., where he and Lilli built a beautiful home and lived for 10 years. In 2000 he and Lilli moved to Lexington, Va., a place he always loved and was happy to return to.

Being an intrinsically artistic and creative person, James was a true connoisseur of beauty. He was a gifted cabinet maker and furniture builder, a student of architecture, a gourmet cook, a lover of jazz, a collector of art, an avid reader, and possessor of a fine and vast vocabulary that he

used well and often. Jim’s gregarious personality, sharp sense of humor, infectious laugh and refined good manners will be sorely missed.

Surviving: his wife, Lilli Bradin; sons, Jay Hardesty Kidd of New York City and Charles Wilhite Kidd of Chico, Calif.; and a grandson, Sean Kidd, Chico, Calif.

Services were held Jan. 25 at the Lee Chapel, Washington and Lee University.

Carol Jean Holliday Martin

Carol Jean Holliday Martin, 74, of Bradley, died Jan. 30, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born May 12, 1937, at Lawton, she was the daughter of the late James and Garnet S. Burnett Holliday. Brother Tommy Holliday, sisters Patricia Ballard and Irene Graham, and a grandson, Robert Keith Lilly II, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Martin was a member of the Bradley First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and a former Sunday school teacher.

She was a homemaker and was a beloved wife, cherished mother and precious grandmother.

Surviving: her husband of 55 years, Herman R. Martin Jr.; son, Michael D. Martin and wife Paula of Troutdale, Va.; daughters, Debra Kay Caudill of Bradley and Norma Jean Nave of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brothers, James Holliday and wife Sue of Bradley, Paul Holliday and wife Jane of Greenville, Va., Bobby Holliday and wife Ellen of Forest Hill, Richard Holliday and wife Lois of Beckley, and Joe Holliday and wife Marybeth of Fairfax, Va.;  sisters, Betty James and husband Richard of High Point, N.C., and Teresa Windsor and husband Jerry of Bradley; a granddaughter whom she and her husband raised, Christina Sadler and husband Mike of Columbus, Ohio, and additional grandchildren, April Lee Master and husband Mark of Irvin, Ky., Amanda Rae Caudill, Brittney Rae Crawford, Jessica Howard and Allison Martin; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Junior Plumley officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Paul Michael Moore, 59, of Pax, died Jan. 27, 2012.

Mary Lou Smith Myers

Mary Lou Smith Myers, 74, of Kincaid, died Jan. 22, 2012, at her home.

Born May 2, 1937, at Page, she was the daughter of Helen McCormick Smith of Kincaid and the late Roy A. Smith. Her husband, John Myers Jr.; son, Douglas Myers; one brother and four sisters also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Myers was a long-standing member of the Robson Freewill Baptist Church and the White Oak Chapter NHRS.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving: sons, Jimmy Myers and wife Kimberly of Sheffield Township, Ohio, and Charles Myers and wife Brenda of Maryville, Tenn.; daughters, Kathy Brown and husband John of North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Teresa Salsgiver and husband James of Cleveland, Ohio; six brothers; two sisters; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Jesse Kenneth Neff

Jesse Kenneth Neff, 90, of Fayetteville, died Jan. 27, 2012, at Fayette Nursing and Rehab, Fayetteville, following an extended illness.

Born Jan. 31, 1921, at Page, he was the son of the late Garland Wilson Neff and Lilly Alice Bryant Neff. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Mae Smith Neff, in 1998; daughter, Cecelia Mae Neff; and several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Neff was a member of Fayetteville First Church of God.

During World War II he served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

He retired from Union Carbide at Alloy where he had worked as a mix house operator.

Surviving: his son, Stephen M. Neff of Fayetteville; daughters, Linda C. Light and husband Russell of Oak Hill, and Pamela D. Marks and husband Dale of Ansted; brothers, James Neff of Fayetteville and Robert Neff of Massillon, Ohio; sisters, Betty Coleman of Navarre, Ohio, and Nancy Philpott of Ohio; half-brothers, Charles Neff, Thomas Neff, and Michael Neff, all of Fayetteville; half-sisters, Loretta Treadway of Beckwith and Sharon Snuffer of Fayetteville; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.

Conner Russell Palmer

Conner Russell Palmer, stillborn infant son of Corey Russell Palmer and Sonya Lynn Brown, died Jan. 23, 2012.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Lucille and Edward Blake, Edmond H. Craig, and Nora Rodkey, and Pawpaw Gwinn.

Willard Wade Rodgers

Willard Wade Rodgers, 83, of Corliss, died Jan. 26, 2012, at his home following an extended illness.

Born Aug. 14, 1928, at Corliss, he was the son of the late Clarence Edward and Amanda Mae Armstrong Rodgers. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Mae Harris Rodgers, in 2007; a daughter, Linda Marie Rodgers; and a brother, Carl Rodgers.

Mr. Rodgers was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a retired railroader.

He was an ordained deacon of the Rupert Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving: daughter, Janice Carol Taylor (Roger) of Rupert; sons, Richard Lewis Rodgers (Helen) of Corliss, and Wade E. Rodgers (Nancy) of Clio, Mich.; sisters, Wanetta McKinney, Virgie Cords, Gladys Black and Dreama Morgan; brothers, Delbert, James, Delmer, Dale, Calvin, Tom, Earl, Merle and Vern Rodgers; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were Jan. 29 at the Rupert Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Moody Roberts officiating. Burial followed at the Bethel Cemetery in Corliss.

George Daniel Siehl II

George D. Siehl II, 95, of Okeechobee, Fla., died Jan. 27, 2012, in Okeechobee.

Born Dec. 22, 1917, in Meyersdale, Pa., he was the son of the late Lawrence H. and Ida G. Leighty Siehl. Mr. Siehl also was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Elizabeth Lewis.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree from the West Virginia University and Potomac State and Master’s degree from West Virginia University.

Mr. Siehl proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He earned many awards including a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Presidential Citation and several Korean Service Medals.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion, United Methodist Men, West Virginia Fireman’s Association and West Virginia Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi. He was an author, 4-H leader, had radio talk shows, public speaker, was a photographer and ecologist, and performed vaudeville and clown shows.

He was retired after 32 years as a Fayette County Co-operative Extension Agent in West Virginia.

Surviving: his sons, Larry Lee (Eileen Mayer) of Lake Worth, Fla., and Charles R. of Denver, Colo.; grandson, Aubrey Lee of Indianapolis, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Justin, Jessica and Emalee; extended family and a host of friends from around the world.

Funeral services were Feb. 1 at Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home with Pastor Bruce Simpson and Pastor Jim Dawson of First United Methodist Church of Okeechobee officiating. Interment followed with military honors at Evergreen Cemetery.

Dolora Mae Skidmore

Dolora Mae Skidmore, 91, of Lewisburg, died Jan. 26, 2012, at Greenbrier Nursing Home in Fairlea.

Born Jan. 8, 1921, at Winona, she was a daughter of the late James Burwell and Grace Ellis Skidmore. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Velma Goddard, and Velma’s sons, Carroll and Keith Goddard; her sister, Ila Callison, and Ila’s son, Erman Callison; and her sister, Olive Hough.

After attending Bluefield Business College, Dolora was a secretary for Left Fork Fuel Company in Quinwood. In 1965, Ms. Skidmore moved to Lewisburg, and later retired from the First National Bank in Ronceverte.

She was an active member of Shuck Memorial Baptist Church where she was active in many church functions.

Dolora was also a member of the PEO Sisterhood, Business and Professional Women and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge where she received her 50-year pin.

Dolora chose to move to Greenbrier Manor in 2009 when her need for care increased. Dolora was treasured by her family and friends, and she will be deeply missed. She gave us all so much of her love.

Surviving: her sister Velma’s children, Nelda Zickafoose, Nyla Godby, and Kyle Dean Goddard; her sister Ila’s children, Nathalie Childers, Emilie Hinzman, Jim Callison, and Nancy Camp; her sister Olive’s son, Fred Dorsey; and a large extended family of cherished nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.

Georgia A. Hale Smith

Georgia A. Hale Smith, 71, of Glen Jean, died Jan. 25, 2012, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Born Sept. 27, 1940, in Minden, she was the daughter of the late George and Creasey Foley Hale. Her husband, Donald Smith, and a sister, Emma Kennedy, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Smith attended the Oak Hill Apostolic Holiness Church and was a homemaker.

Ruth Mildred Smith

Ruth Mildred Smith, 90, formerly of Pax, Glen Daniel, Beckley and neighboring areas, died Jan. 24, 2012, at Alamance Regional Hospital in Burlington, N.C.

Born April 5, 1921, she was one of nine children of the late William Hubbard and Lillie Meadows Hubbard. She was the widow of the late John M. Smith, a native of Crawley. A brother, Charles Hubbard, and sisters, Pauline Kinser and Lillian Legg, also preceded her in death.

Surviving: son, John of Ashton; daughters, Nancy and husband Jess Athey of Pax, Janet and husband Karl Lilly of Sissonville, and Annette and husband Steve Windsor of Mebane, N.C.; grandchildren Jeffrey Athey of Beckley, John Athey of Jackson, Ohio, Joey Athey of Beckley, Kevin Smith of Teays Valley, Mark Smith of Florida, Marshall Smith of Fayetteville, Michelle Smith of Florida, Karen Fisher of South Charleston, Mary Harrison of Sissonville, Jennifer Swinford of Fredericksburg, Va., Beth Floyd of Burlington, N.C., and Josh Windsor of Mebane, N.C.; 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Bradshaw, Glenna August, Betty Clay and Norma McNeill; and brother, Lewis.

Norma Gay Westmoreland

Norma Gay Westmoreland, 78, of Mount Tabor, died Jan. 16, 2012, at her home with her loving family by her side.

Born Dec. 2, 1933, at Minden, she was the daughter of the late Walter Dubree Osborne and Elsie Mae Lively Osborne. She also was preceded in death by her loving husband, French “Wimpy” Westmoreland, on Jan. 30, 2011; by brothers, William D. “Sonny” Osborne, and David Osborne; and by sisters, Arnella Faye Maynor, and an infant sister, Lucille Osborne.

Mrs. Westmoreland was a former registered nurse at the Beckley Hospital, and later became a caregiver to all of her family.

Mrs. Westmoreland was a member of the Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren, and enjoyed taking care of her grandchild, Kaylan Westmoreland.

Surviving: her children, Michael Westmoreland of Mount Tabor, with whom she made her home, and Sharon Keller and her husband Jack of Harper Heights; grandchildren, Kaylan Westmoreland, Jeremy Thomas, Jonathan Thomas and his wife, Ashlee, and Jaclyn Keller and her fiancé, Eric Yancey; a great-grandchild, Shyann Nycole Yancey; brothers, Hubert Osborne of Oak Hill, and Clarence Osborne and his wife, Virgie, of Chesapeake, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Norma Gay Westmoreland was conducted Jan. 30 at the Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren with Pastor Leonard Foley officiating.
