Vanessa Washington Grasty

Ms. Vanessa Washington Grasty, 52, of Mt. Hope, died March 21, 2012, in Tennessee.

Born May 19, 1959, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Phillip Washington Sr. and the late Dorothy Payne Washington. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Phillip and Robin, and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Ms. Grasty was a 1977 graduate of Mt. Hope High School, where she was a cheerleader, a majorette, and Ms. Mustang of 1977.

She worked at C&P Telephone in Charleston and transferred to Washington, D.C. She lived in Nashville, and then moved back to Mt. Hope to care for her father.

Surviving, in addition to her father: her sisters, Delcina of Detroit, Mich., Portia (Leroy) of Maryland, and  Cynthia and Reba, both of Tennessee; brother, “Worby” of Tennessee; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were March 31 at the Glorious Church of God In Christ, Mt. Hope, with Bishop John Grant officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Arlin Curtis Hackney

Arlin Curtis Hackney, 83, of Oak Hill, died April 1, 2012, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Beckley.

Born Dec. 13, 1928, at Island Branch, he was the son of the late Elza C. and Claytie J. Baughan Hackney. His wife, Edith Marie Goins Hackney, and sisters, Gail Pryhechzewski, Jerre Humphrey and Doris Martin also preceded him in death.

He was a retired mill Inspector for Republic Steel.

Mr. Hackney attended Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving: his only son, Arlin Craig Hackney of Oak Hill; his dear friend, Shirley Wriston; and sisters, Frances Hackney Johnson of Fayetteville and Marilyn Henderson of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 5 at 2 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill with Pastor Mark Wood officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post No. 3110.
