Jeanette R. McCoin Adkins

Jeanette R. McCoin Adkins, 84, of Beelick Knob, died June 29, 2006, in The Brier Rehabilitation Center at Fairlea following a long illness.

Horace Angel

Horace M. Angel, 84, of Boomer, died July 1, at Montgomery General Hospital.

Born Dec. 18, 1921, in Ravenscroft, Tenn., he was the son of the late Joe and Callie Milligan Angel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Haggard, Robert, Clyde, Comer, and J.C.; grandson, William (Billy) Giacomo; and brother-in-law, Marvin Feicke.

Mr. Angel was a retired miner of 45 years from Peabody Coal Company at Harewood, and a member of UMWA and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He also was a member of Carbondale Baptist Church.

Surviving: his wife of 63 years, Mary; daughter, Nancy and her husband, William Giacomo, of Boomer, and Linda and her husband, Frank Carelli, of Conroe, Texas; sons, Sam and his wife, Tracey, of North Augusta, S.C., James of Belva, and Jeffrey and his wife, Laura, of Fayetteville; brothers, Sam of Mount Carbon, and Richard of Smithers; sisters, Dorothy Hamlin of Columbus, Ohio, and Ruth Feicke of Boomer; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Service was July 5 at Carbondale Baptist Church at Cannelton with Rev. Ron Eagle officiating. Entombment with military honors presented by Post #8366 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Gauley Bridge followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

James Leon ‘Jim’ Boothe

James Leon “Jim” Boothe, 58, of Oak Hill, died at his home June 28, 2006.

Born March 16, 1948, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Sebert Boothe and Frances Ann Broyles Boothe.

Jim was a graduate of West Virginia Tech in Montgomery, was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church, a Mason with the Masonic Lodge, a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and was employed by Verizon Telephone.

Surviving: his children, James L. Boothe II and Mallory K. Boothe, both of Oak Hill; his former wife, Brenda K. Allen; and sisters, Mary F. Ellison of Bradley, Donna K. Bavely and husband, John, of Goode, Va., and Sandra L. Thompson and husband, Bob, of Oak Hill.

Service was July 1 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Dr. John Sauvage and the Rev. William Slates officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Military rites were conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110.

Grace Elmore

Grace Elmore, 89, of Fayetteville, died June 27, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

She was the daughter of the late Harrison and Ora Nottingham. She also was preceded in death by her husband, P.L. “Pearlie” Lee Elmore, on July 17, 1975; a daughter, Betty Grace Spangler; a son, Grant D. Elmore; grandsons, Brent Parsons and Mark Elmore; son-in-law, Larry B. Parsons; great-granddaughter; Hannah Parsons; brothers, Shirley, Kelly and Leonard; and sisters, Cynthia and Jean.

Mrs. Elmore was a 63-year resident of Fayetteville and a 61-year charter member of Fayetteville First Church of God. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years at both Fayetteville First Church of God and earlier at Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle.

Surviving: her son, Donald L. Elmore and wife, Sally, a daughter, Joan L. Parsons, and son-in-law, Frank Spangler Jr., all of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Debbie Elmore, Stacy White and husband, Bryan, Bryan Parsons and wife, Betsy, Bruce Parsons and wife, Retha, Joni Bible and husband, Blake, Tammy Pittman and husband, Jackie, and Whitney Finch and husband, David; great-grandchildren, Tristan and Brandin White, Jessica, Addison and David Parsons, Brittney Parsons, and Willie and Cassie Beth Spangler; sisters, Dot Snyder of Columbus, Ohio, and Lucy Canterbury of Oak Hill; and a brother, Dolby Nottingham and wife, Virginia, of Pennsylvania.

Graveside service was June 30 at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with her grandson-in-law, the Rev. Jackie Pittman, officiating.

The family requests that donations be made in her memory to Fayetteville First Church of God through Michael Parsons or Gatewood Church of God through Tammy Pittman.

Rachel Susie Gilbert

Rachel Susie Gilbert, 83, of Lanark, a native of Backus Mountain, died July 2, 2006.

Charles Lee Hart

Charles Lee Hart, 74, of Beckwith, died June 21, 2006, at his residence.

Born June 1, 1932, at Ansted, he was the son of the late Arnold H. and Nettie Neff Hart. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Norene Imogene Hart.

Mr. Hart was of the Methodist faith and was retired from the military, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired in February 1993 from the Roswell Police Department in Roswell, N.M., where he was a member of the Lions Club.

Surviving: his sisters, Jo Ella Herbert of Fayetteville, Ruth Hogg of Ansted and Patsy Wills and husband, Bill, of Florence, Ala.; brothers, John and wife, Kay Hart, of New Vienna, Ohio, George Hart of Landrum, S.C., and Allen Hart and Felicia of Ansted; two stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Service was July 2 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with the Rev. Freddie Parkins officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Margaret Willis Hundley

Margaret Willis Hundley, 89, of Scarbro, died June 30, 2006, at Hidden Valley Healthcare Center in Oak Hill.

Born Oct. 29, 1916, in Oswald, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Lillie Monway Willis. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Obert Herman Hundley, on Aug. 4, 1975; sisters, Marie Richards, Lillie Wood and Rosie Harvey; brothers, William, John and Earl; and a granddaughter, Chrissy Hundley.

Mrs. Hundley was a homemaker who loved to quilt. She was a member of Jones Avenue First Church of God, Oak Hill, and Scarbro Methodist Church.

Surviving: a son, Herman Hundley Jr., and wife, Beverly, of Oak Hill; a daughter, Margaret Woodard of Oak Hill; a brother, Harry Willis and wife, Ann, of Hardy, Va.; a sister, Florence Banks of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; grandchildren, Kenneth Woodard and wife, Marcia, Laura Hundley and Sarah Pauley and husband, Brian; and two great-grandchildren.

Service was July 3 at the funeral home. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Jerry Neal Jessup, 54, of Lochgelly, formerly of Mount Tabor, died June 18, 2006.

George Henley Shumaker, 80, of Fayetteville, died June 22, 2006, at the Ansted Center following an extended illness.

Beatrice Hill Sumpter

Beatrice Hill Sumpter, 83, of Oak Hill, died June 28, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division.

Born Feb. 23, 1923, in Clintwood, Va., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Viola Rose Hill. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Sumpter; three brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Sumpter was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.

Surviving: sons, Larry Sumpter and wife, Darlene, of Oak Hill, Jerry Sumpter and wife, Verna, of Beckley, Terry Sumpter and wife, Sharon, of Sanford, N.C., and Danny Sumpter and wife, Vicki, of Oak Hill; daughters, Patricia Shepperd and husband, Fred, of Beckley, and Sandra Bryant and husband, James, of Oak Hill; a sister, Aima McLaughlin of Harrison, Mich.; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Service was July 3 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Jessie Parker officiating. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Bonnie Jones Willis

Bonnie Kay Jones Willis, 54, of Brooklyn, died June 30, 2006, at home.

Born Nov. 14, 1951, at Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Judie D. Jones and Effie Mae Eagle Jones. She also was preceded in death by her sisters, Carol Easterbrook and Judy Shawkey.

Mrs. Willis was a CNA and worked in area nursing homes and Childers Enterprises for 13 years. She loved to paint pictures and write poems. She sold many of her paintings.

Surviving: her husband, Afton Willis of Brooklyn; a son, Paul Willis of Brooklyn; a daughter, Kimberly Bowles of Brooklyn; sisters, Betty Lou Sears of Brooklyn, and Barbara Wilson of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Ernie Jones of Brooklyn; a granddaughter, Ashley Bowles; grandsons, Bailey Bowles and Christian McGuire; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Larry Humphreys officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
