Ernest R. Bragg Sr.

Ernest “Ernie” Ray Bragg Sr., 61, of Huntersville, N.C., died June 3, 2007.

Born July 16, 1945, at Lochgelly, he was the son of the late Herbert and Virginia Bragg. Ernie also was preceded in death by his son, Ernest R. Bragg Jr.

He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. Important things in his life were his Christian faith and his children and grandchildren.

Ernie was a longtime member of Huntersville Church of God.

Surviving: daughter, Ginger Bragg Green, and grandson, Tyler Grosso of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Lou Ella Foss (Jim) of Pittsboro, N.C.; brothers, Michael Bragg (Linda) of Charlotte, N.C., Pat Bragg (Charlene) of Huntersville, N.C., and David Bragg (Sandra) of Lochgelly.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 8 at 1 p.m. with the funeral services to follow at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. Burial will be at I.O.O.F. Odd Fellows Cemetery, Oak Hill.

Carl Blaine Cox Jr.

Carl Blaine Cox Jr., 24, of Edmond, died suddenly May 28, 2007, at Hico.

Born Jan. 4, 1983, in Beckley, he was the son of Carl B. Cox Sr. of Edmond and the late Teresa Allene Cox, who preceded in death in 2001.

Mr. Cox was a self-employed gutter worker and he was a 2001 graduate of Midland Trail High School. He enjoyed life, hunting, fishing and riding his 4-wheeler with friends.

Surviving: his father, Carl B. Cox Sr. of Edmond; a brother, Clifford Wayne Cox of Edmond; sisters, Rhonda Marie Cox and Melissa Ann Cox, both of Edmond; and a host of other family and friends.

Service was June 2 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville. Burial followed in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Jerome Paul Dufour

Jerome Paul Dufour, 71, of Merritt Island, Fla., died May 30, 2007, at Wueshoff Hospital in Cocoa, Fla., due to complications from an automobile accident.

Born July 9, 1936, in Ansted, he was the son of the late Charles Dufour Sr. and Arbutus Niday Dufour. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Raymond Dufour.

Mr. Dufour was a graduate of Ansted High School and served in the Air Force for four years. He was employed by RCA as a radar technician and was a business owner in Cocoa.

Surviving: his wife, Emi, of Merritt Island; sons, Jeff Payne of Florida and Steve Payne of Michigan; daughters, Judy and Gale of Florida; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Dufour Jr. and wife, Lucille, and Harold O. Dufour and wife, Ilene, of Ansted; and nieces and nephews in the Ansted area.

By his request, there was no service.



James Percy Goddard

James Percy Goddard, 60, of Danese, died June 3, 2007, at his home in Danese.

By his own request, the body will be cremated and there will be no memorial services.

Dustin Tyler Hughes

Dustin Tyler Hughes, 22, of Hico, died suddenly May 27, 2007.

Born Aug. 29, 1984, in Charleston, he was the son of Larry Hughes of Hico and Charlene Crumrine Hughes of Oak Hill.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Courtney Bethe Hughes, on Oct. 20, 2002, and Ashley Allyn Hughes, on March 3, 2005; maternal grandparents, Charles and Nancy Crumrine; and paternal grandfather, Paul Hughes.

Dustin was an iron worker by occupation, a former employee of Gino’s of Ansted and a Christian.

He was a 2002 graduate of Midland Trail High School.

Surviving: his parents, Charlene Hughes of Oak Hill and Larry Hughes of Hico; a brother, Jordan Boone Hughes, residing with his parents; his grandmother, Betty Jean Hartley Hughes of Falls View; and several aunts and uncles.

Service was June 1 at Sunday Road Baptist Church, Hico, with Pastor Allen Donaldson and Pastor Sam R. Calloway Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Hico.

Nadine Bragg Hunter

Nadine Bragg Hunter, 78, of Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Victor, died May 25, 2007, in Melbourne following a short illness.

Born Nov. 13, 1928 in Landisburg, she was the daughter of the late Fred Bragg and Ella Bennett Bragg. She also was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Hunter; children, Patricia Hunter & James Burton Hunter; and a brother, Fred E. Bragg.

A 1946 graduate of Ansted High School, she was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church of Hopewell, a former employee of Owents Illinois Glass Plant in Kanawha City, and a homemaker.

Surviving: daughter, Jeanette Stys of Melbourne; son, Paul Hunter of Melbourne; sister, Pauline Stone of Victor; brother, Boyd S. Bragg of Victor; and grandchildren, Jericha and Jared.

Funeral and burial will be held at a later date in Melbourne; arrangements are incomplete.

Arlene Dorsey Johnson

Arlene Dorsey Johnson, 68, of Edmond, died May 29, 2007, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington.

Born July 6, 1938, at Mount Olive, she was the daughter of Ralph Dorsey and the late Tabitha Dorsey of Brownsville. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Ray Johnson Sr., and sister, Pauline Dickason.

Mrs. Johnson was a wonderful lady with a big heart. She was active and full of live every day of her life.

Surviving: her sons, Bobby (Julie) and Ricky Koch of Pennsboro, Roger Koch of Elkridge, and Craig (Kay) Johnson of Edmond; daughter, Rita (Steve) Brumley of Ohio; brother, Bob Dorsey of Smithers; sister, Eva (Bob) Damron of Brownsville; grandchildren, Tabitha, Daniel and Angel Koch, Kristin, Nathan and Justin Brumley; step-grandchildren, Tiffney and Courtney; and great-grandchild, Chloe.

Funeral services were June 2 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Paul Syner officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Ansted.

George S. Kinser

George S. Kinser, 88, of Oak Hill, died June 4, 2007, at Fayette Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Fayetteville.

Born Dec. 13, 1918, at Kincaid, he was the son of the late G.S. Kinser Sr. and Julia Belle Kincaid Kinser. As the last surviving member of his family, he also was preceded in death by five sisters, Oretha Bradbury, Opal Payne, Ann Johnson, Dorothy Todorovich and Ruby R. May; and three brothers, Wilburn Kinser, Woodrow Kinser and Fred Kinser.

He retired from Milburn Colliery with 32 years’ service.

Mr. Kinser was a member of the Kincaid United Methodist Church, the UMWA, and a 50-year member of the Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. & A.M.

Surviving: wife of 32 years, Virginia Kinser; and by several nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday, June 7 at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill,with Rev. Arolette Stover officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with Masonic graveside rites by Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. & A.M.

Charles Lee Kuhn

Charles Lee Kuhn, 77, of Cool Ridge, died June 1, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born July 25, 1929, at Cunard, he was the son of the late Ulysses S. “Jack” and Margaret E. “Bessie” Kincaid Kuhn. He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Kuhn, Monroe Kuhn, Craver Kuhn and James Kuhn; and two sisters, Nona Hunter and Loretta Ombler.

He was a retired coal miner, having 36 years’ service with Smith & Stover Coal Co. of Jonben.

Mr. Kuhn attended Cool Ridge Community Church and was a member of District 29, UMWA.

Surviving: wife, W. Phyllis Bennett Kuhn; sons, Charles Kuhn Jr. and wife, Rosalie, of Fairdale, and Danny Ray Kuhn and wife, Jennifer, of Cool Ridge; sister, Birdie McKinney of Wayne; brother, Sisroe Kuhn of Leavittesburg, Ohio; grandchildren, Ashley Calloway and husband, Jeremy, of Cool Ridge, Chelsey Kuhn of Cool Ridge, Diana Bennett and husband, Edwin, of Shady Spring, Lisa Kuhn of Fairdale and Christi Kuhn of Fairdale; and great-grandchildren, Iris Calloway and Trinity and Charity Bennett.

Service was June 3 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Paul Holstein officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Christopher Lee Legg

Christopher Lee Legg, 23, of Hico, died suddenly May 28, 2007, on Stringtown Road at Hico.

Born April 3, 1984, in Beckley, he was the son of Sharon Hoy of Charleston and Donald Legg of Hico.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mary Hall; and his paternal grandparents, Johnny and Florence Legg.

Christopher attended Riverside High School at Quincy. He was a lover of the outdoors and spent much of his time hunting, fishing and motorcycle riding.

He was a construction worker.

Surviving: his dad, Donald Legg of Hico; his mother, Sharon Hoy and a special friend, Fred T. Kerns, of Charleston; a brother, Donald Thomas Legg and his wife, Tara, of Hico; a niece, Tatum Legg of Hico; maternal grandfather, Donald Flint of Lookout; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Service was May 31 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with the Rev. Danny Legg officiating. Burial followed in Legg Cemetery, Hico.

Robert Russell McMillion

Robert Russell McMillion, 72, of Winona, died May 31, 2007, in a Charleston area hospital following a long illness.

Born Oct. 18, 1934, in Winona, he was a son of Anna Holcomb McMillion of Winona and the late Richard McMillion. He also was preceded in death by a son, Robert Ray McMillion.

Mr. McMillion was a heavy equipment operator and belonged to the operating engineers organization.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: his devoted ex-wife, Frances Hunt McMillion of Fayetteville; daughters, Terry King and her husband, William, of Staunton, Va., and Anna Williams of Woodbridge, Va.; a son, Barry Russell McMillion of Winona; sisters, Margaret Poling Show, Jane Parrish and Linda Gail Holst-Meyers, all of Charleston; a brother, Roy McMillion of Charleston; granddaughters, Bobbi Lopez of Danese, Susan Tomlinson of Lake Ridge, Va., Leslie Tucker of Fayetteville and Lilli McMillion of Hilton Village; grandsons, Timothy and Joshua Deloach of Atlanta, Ga., and Christopher Barker of Stafford, Va.; great-granddaughter, Haley Marie Barker of Stafford; and great-grandsons, Lake and Jaret Lopez of Danese.

Entombment was June 4 at Chapel of Rest Mausoleum, Victor.

Charles C. Parrish

Charles C. Parrish, 66, of Fayetteville, died May 29, 2007, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 27, 1940, at Nuttalburg, he was the son of the late Willard Parrish Sr. and Myrtle Pridemore. Charles also was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Parrish, on March 6, 2006; brothers, Billy Parrish, Lawrence Parrish and John Parrish; and sisters, Dorothy Painter and Winnie Young.

Charles was an employee of Fayette County Schools as a bus driver, driving Bus No. 200.

Surviving: his son, Charles W. Parrish of Hilltop; his daughter, Tanya Maynus of Fayetteville; brothers, Robert Parrish of Oak Hill, and Willard Parrish Jr. and Donald Parrish, both of Maryland; a sister, Shelba Mitchell of Fayetteville; grandsons, Dustin and Roger “Tate” Wykle; and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

Service was June 2 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Morris Nutter and the Rev. Jackie Pittman officiating. Entombment was in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Orville Lee ‘Whimpy’ Pettry Sr.

Orville Lee “Whimpy” Pettry Sr., 71, of Oak Hill, died June 3, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born June 3, 1936, in Kanawha County, he was the son of the late Arthur Lee Pettry and Verna Mae Adkins Pettry. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Lou Pettry; a daughter, Lisa Marie Pettry; a grandson, Noah (Pettry) Tompkins; brothers, Clarence W. Pettry and Delbert E. Pettry; and sisters, Delma M. Pettry Caperton and Eleanor G. Pettry Horton.

Orville was a foundry worker at an auto parts factory in Deshler, Ohio, and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving: his children, Orville L. Pettry Jr. of West Unity, Ohio, Jeff Pettry of Bryan, Ohio, Marsha Figgins of Richlands, N.C., William Arthur (Pettry) Tompkins of West Unity, Ohio, Robert Pettry of Deshler, Ohio, and stepson Charles Ponder of Lake City, Fla.; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; his brothers, Douglas M. Pettry of Wealthy Acres, Richard W. Pettry of Sand Fork, Jerry R. Pettry of Oak Hill, Dennis J. Pettry of Minden and Stacy Pettry of Morganton, N.C.; and his sisters, Marcella Marshall of Greenville, Tenn., Della M. Kidwell of Rockport, Glenda K. Shively of Apache Junction, Ark., Pamela S. Pettry of Oak Hill and Dinah Burleson of Oak Hill.

Service was June 6 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. David Sneed officiating. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday, June 8 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bartlow Township, Ohio, with Pastor James Erven officiating.

Joan Williams Scheetz

Joan Williams Scheetz of North Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Pax, died Dec. 7, 2006.

Memorial service was June 3 at Pax Community Center.



Barney White Jr.

Barney White Jr., 75, of Oak Hill, died May 29, 2007, at his daughter’s home in Beckley, following an extended illness.

Born June 29, 1931, in Snaketown, he was the son of the late Barney White Sr. and Pauline Perkins White. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Zoe Jackson White, and two sisters, Eary “Woogie” Smith of North Carolina and Nina “Sissy” Wise of Ohio.

Mr. White was a retired letter carrier for the Fayetteville Post Office.

Barney also was retired from the U.S. Army, serving 20 years, including a tour in Vietnam.

He was a member of the American Legion, Moose Club, Shriner’s and Masons. He loved to read and bowl and was an avid football, basketball and NASCAR fan. As a young man, he raced motorcycles and cars. He was a ski instructor and a mountain climber instructor. He loved hunting, deep sea fishing and spending time on his houseboat at Summersville Lake with family and friends.

Surviving: a brother, Paul White of Fayetteville; sister, Donna Gaye Dalton of Ohio; sons, Tommy White and wife, Tina, of Fayetteville, Mike White and wife, Marilyn, of North Carolina; daughters, Cheryl Winter and husband, Mack, of Beckley, Kay White of Fayetteville, and his first wife, Norma Treadwell Burdiss; grandchildren, Tonja and Thomas Michael White, Jerod White, Zachary White, and Craig, Luke and Jacob Winter; great-granddaughter, Felicity Winter; stepdaughters include Debbie and husband, George Bryan, Daun Jackson, and Donna Jackson and husband, Warren.

His desire to be cremated was arranged by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. His request was not to have a funeral or flowers, but instead for those who wanted, to donate to his favorite charity organization, Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3229 Burret Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229-3095.

A celebration of his life was held Saturday, June 2, at the American Legion in Fayetteville.
