Alfred H. Barnes

Alfred H. Barnes, 84, of Wilmington, Del., died Dec. 1, 2008.

Conley Duff Blevins

Conley Duff Blevins, 68, of Colonial View Road, Kingsport, Tenn., formerly of Mercer County and Scarbro, died Nov. 29, 2008, at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Medical Center, in Birmingham, Ala.

Born April 10, 1940, at Hill Top, he was the son of the late Charles D. Blevins and Freda Lee Taylor Blevins.

Conley was a graduate of Oak Hill High School. He served with the U.S. Army from 1958 until 1961. For many years, Conley served as an agent for Piedmont Airlines and retired with U.S. Air with 31 years of service.

Surviving: children, Brent L. Blevins and wife Tracey of Boyce, Va., Mark Blevins of Nashville, Tenn., and Lori Blevins Miller of Cleveland, Tenn.; grandchildren, Alec, Kyle and Ashley; and a brother, Ron Blevins of Covington, Va.

A graveside service was held Dec. 3 at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill. A eulogy was offered by Brent Blevins on behalf of his family.

Beatrice Louise Bowyer

Beatrice Louise Bowyer, 76, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 30, 2008, following a long illness.

Born Nov. 20, 1932, at Oswald, she was a daughter of the late Thora and Agnes Treadway. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Thomas.

Louise was a homemaker and a member of Red Star Baptist Church of Red Star.

Surviving: her husband, William H. Bowyer Jr. of Oak Hill; a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel A. and Amy Bowyer of Mount Lookout; sisters, Jessie Davis, Helen Lilly, Judy Wickline, Shelby Davis, all of Maple Fork, and Emma Jean Jones of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, Jack Treadway, Gayland Treadway, Shirley Treadway, Homer Treadway, all of Maple Fork, and Kenny Treadway of Columbus, Ohio.

Funeral service was Dec. 3 at the Chapel of Rest Mausoleum in Victor with Pastor Randy Sunderland officiating. Entombment followed in the Chapel of Rest.

Elsie May Coleman

Elsie May Coleman, 85, of Mount Hope, died Nov. 27, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following a long illness.

Born Dec.24, 1922 at Cowpasture, Va., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Maggie McCutcheon Vance. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William N. Coleman, on Oct. 23, 1994.

Mrs. Coleman was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist Church at Ramsey.

Surviving: several nieces and nephews including a “special nephew,” Bill Lane and wife, Blanche, and son, Jeremy, of Fayetteville; sisters-in-law, Eva Harrah of Fayetteville and Lucille Harrah of Virginia; a very special friend, Judy Cottle of Fayetteville, Rt. 2; and a host of friends.

Services were Nov. 30 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Charles Bowe officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Janet Dell Comer

Janet Dell Comer, 72, of Scarbro, died Nov. 24, surrounded by family and friends, at the Bowers Hospice House in Prosperity, after a long, brave battle with cancer.

For many years, she was a stay-at-home mom, raising four children. When her children were mostly grown, she went to work for the Fayette County Committee on Aging and later for Plateau Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Comer; her parents, Freeman A. Mitchell and Hazel Withrow Mitchell; and siblings, Josephine Podarass and Shelley Mitchell.

Surviving: siblings, Else Burgess and Earl Freeman Mitchell; children, Edward and wife, Bobbi Comer, of Fayettevillle, Alan and wife, Karen, of Dunbar, William Comer of Hawaii, and Janet Dougherty and fiance, Robert McComas, of Mabscott; grandchildren, Laura Comer, Jennifer Bodkin, A.J. Comer, Daniel Comer, Megan Comer, Ashley Dougherty and Emily Comer; and three beautiful great-grandchildren.

Service was Nov. 28 at High Lawn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carlyle W. Blomme officiating, and the burial followed immediately at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Verl Bernard Cooper Sr.

Verl Bernard Cooper Sr., 57, of Beelick Knob, Meadow Bridge, W.Va., died Nov. 27, 2008, at his home, following a sudden illness.

Born May 5, 1951, at Meadow Bridge, he was the son of the late John C. Cooper Sr. and Mamie Mae Ewing Cooper. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Cooper.

Surviving: a daughter, Lisa Lynn Brooks and husband Richard L. Brooks III of Houston, Texas; a son, Verl Bernard Cooper Jr. of Meadow Bridge; grandsons, Shawn A. Carden and Richard L. Brooks IV; brothers, John C. Cooper Jr., Homer Cooper, Ernest Cooper, and Daniel Cooper; and sisters, Geneva Montieth, Juanita Hammond, Norma Chovan, Linda Fitzwater, Sue Miller, and Joan Storck.

Graveside services were Dec. 1 at the Cooper Family Cemetery on Meadow Camp Road in Meadow Bridge.

Amy Marie Drennen

Amy Marie Drennen, 35, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 27, 2008, at her residence, as a result of a house fire.

Born June 20, 1973, at Ashtabula, Ohio, she was the daughter of Mike and Rebecca Hughes Drennen of Oak Hill.

Amy was a member of the LifeBridge Assembly of God in Oak Hill and was enrolled in computer classes at the Academy of Careers and Technologies in Oak Hill. She was devoted to her beloved dog, Chelesa.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, Mike and Rebeeca Drennen: her brother, Johny Drennen Jr. and his wife, Shelby, of Kodak, Tenn.; her sisters, Teresa Burdette and her husband, David, of Kodak, and Crystal Novotny and her husband, Joe, of Oak Hill; and nieces and nephews, Samantha and Courtney Drennen, and Levi, Luke, and Lilly Burdette, all of Kodak.

Funeral services were Nov. 30 at the LifeBridge Assembly of God, Oak Hill, with Pastor Joe Hoggard officiating, assisted by the Rev. George Mandakunis. Burial followed in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Pea Ridge Road, Oak Hill.

Patricia D. Berry Gardner

Patricia D. Berry Gardner, 61, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., died Nov. 21, 2008, at home, following a short illness.

Born Jan. 27, 1947, on Backus Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Earl Berry and Marie Gilkerson Berry Hunt. She also was preceded in death by a special nephew, Kevin Hunt; a brother-in-law, Michael Hunt; and loving in-laws, Jim and Virginia Gardner.

Pat was a homemaker for the past eight years and was of the Pentecostal Faith.

Surviving: her devoted husband of 33 years, James Gardner of Smith Mountain Lake; a stepfather, Michael Hunt Sr. of Florida; brothers, Earl Keaton Berry and wife, Edna, and Justice Berry and wife, Martha, all of Backus Mountain; sisters, Joyce Goins and husband, Norman, of Alto, N.J., Brenda Hunt of Backus Mountain, and Pamela McCants and husband, Danny, of Glade Springs; a stepsister, Joann Gardner of Prosperity; a stepbrother, Junior Berry of Delaware; brother-in-law, Andrew Gardner and wife, Tracy, of Crawley; a sister-in-law, Diana and husband Mark Oxley of Crab Orchard; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Frances Irene Fox Harrah

Frances Irene Fox Harrah, 77, of Circleview Drive, Beckley, died Nov. 26, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, following a short illness.

Born July 19, 1931, at Crickmer, she was the daughter of the late Okey Leo Fox and Nellie Elizabeth Boyd Fox. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert O. “Jim” Harrah Sr., on Feb. 4, 2008.

Mrs. Harrah was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking for all of her family and friends.

Surviving: her children, Larry Harrah and companion Mark of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Gilbert Harrah Jr. and wife Vickie of Flat Top Lake, Linda Mills and husband Mason of Ghent, Brenda Pederson and husband Mike of Naples, Fla., Terri Ellison and companion Curtis Todd of Grandview, Betty Harrah of Beckley, and Steven Harrah and wife Tammy of Cool Ridge; grandchildren, Robert Mills, J.R. Reba Jarrett Hodge

Reba Jarrett Hodge, 93, of Lookout, formerly of Beech Glenn, died Dec. 1, 2008.

Born June 17, 1915, at Greenview, she was the daughter of the late Abraham and Clara Kirk Jarrett. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Mangus Hodge; sons, Edwin and Charles; brothers, Orville, Hartford, Herman, and Martin; sisters, Elsie James, Grace Hinkle, and Edith Burdette; and her great-granddaughter, Stephanie Hodge.

She was a member of the Boomer Church of Christ.

Surviving: her daughter, Jo Ann Williams and son-in-law Bill, with whom she resided; brother, Anderson Jarrett and sister-in-law Irene of Waverly, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved and they loved her.

Services were held Dec. 3 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Burial followed in the Hodge Family Cemetery, Artie.

Roxalana Bankhead Banks Jesser

Roxalana Bankhead Banks Jesser died Nov. 26, 2008.

Known to all as “Pet,” she was a daughter of the late Dr. John Bankhead Banks Jr. and Catherine Dana Smith Banks of Charleston.

As a granddaughter of Issac Noyes Smith II and Elizabeth Dana Smith, she was a “sweet sixteen,” the first cousins who spent their summers at the Smith Family Farm, “SmithOver” in Lewisburg. Pet was a direct descendant of Issac Noyes, a pioneer in the Kanawha Valley, and his wife, Cynthia Morris, daughter of William Morris, the first white settler in the Kanawha Valley; and was named for their daughter, Roxalana Emmeline Noyes.

Pet was born Jan. 2, 1945, in Charleston. She was a 1962 graduate of Charleston High School and a 1964 graduate of Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, D.C., where she attained a degree in Kindergarten Education. Following graduation, she taught kindergarten at South Hills Country Day School in Charleston under the guidance of Halene M. Dick.

While in Charleston she was a member of the Junior League of Charleston, an organization which her mother co-founded.

In 1968 Pet married Frederick Alexander Jesser III of Charleston. They first lived in Richmond, Va., and later in Morgantown where Fred attended law school at the University. Following graduation from law school, Pet and Fred moved to Fayetteville, where he began his practice of law which continues.

While in Fayetteville, in addition to raising two boys, she was active in the Fayette Humane Society, being the secretary thereof. In 2006, she and Fred moved permanently to her summer cottage at SmithOver.

Pet is survived by her husband of 40 years and sons, Frederick Alexander Jesser IV and his wife, Angela, of Williamstown, and Banks Sutherland Jesser and his fiancé, Courtney Creasman, and her son, Gavin, of Sinks Grove; her sister, Mary Maquillan of Gainesville, Fla.; brothers, John Bankhead Banks Jr. and his wife, Celia , of Lexington, Ky., and Christopher Noyes Banks and his wife, Priscilla, of Ashland, Va.; her 15 wonderful first cousins and their families, all of whom she adored; and her collie, “Bea.”

A memorial service will be held around the pond on Pet’s portion of SmithOver off Lipps Road on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m. The family has asked that donations be made in Pet’s name to one’s local Humane Society or animal protection agency.

Upon learning of her death, an old friend correctly stated, “Pet touched many lives, all in good ways.”

Robert R. ‘Booby’ Lagos

Robert R. “Booby” Lagos, 66, of Fayetteville, died Nov. 29, 2008, at his residence.

Born June 13, 1942, at Summerlee, he was the son of the late John and Catherine Novobilsky Lagos. He also was preceded in death by two sisters.

Mr. Lagos was a disabled coal miner and stay-at-home father. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill.

Surviving: his wife, Paula Lagos; a son, Chad and wife Danielle of Fayetteville; a daughter, Emily Wygal and husband Scott of Scarbro; a grandson, Ezekiel Lagos; sons by a previous marriage, Shane and Brandon of Georgia; and brothers, John Lagos of Virginia, and James Lagos, Frankie Lagos, and Gregory Lagos, all of West Virginia.

Mass of Christian burial was Dec. 2 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

June L. Martin, 71, of Deland, Fla., formerly of Oak Hill, died Nov. 25, 2008, at Alliance Nursing Home in Deland.

Born Aug. 5, 1937, at Danese, she was the daughter of the late John Lawson and Grace L. Hanshew Martin.

She was a seamstress for Goodwill Industries.

Miss Martin attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill.

Cletis Perry Pinkerton

Cletis Perry Pinkerton, 73, of Easton, Md., formerly of Oak Hill, died Nov. 20, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Easton, from pulmonary disease and pneumonia.

Born Nov. 9, 1935, in Willis Branch, he was the son of the late Ray and Lena Foster Pinkerton. A brother, Dennie Pinkerton, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Pinkerton served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954-1957 and was a graduate of the University of Charleston with B.S. in Business Management.

Cletis was a former Engineering Department employee for Long-Airdox in Oak Hill and was a retired general manager for MTI in Mentor, Ohio.

He and his wife attended the Church of the Nazarene when residing in Oak Hill.

Surviving: his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Muriel Preece Pinkerton; daughter and son-in-law, Taunya and Michael Bowen of Greensboro, Md.; son, Timothy Pinkerton of Richmond, Texas; grandchildren, Jeremy Bowen of Greensboro, Jason Bowen and fiancee Jessica Banzet of Hillsboro, Md., Vicki McFarland and husband Shane of Houston, Texas, and Timothy Pinkerton and fiancee Alicia Hanna of New Boston, Texas; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Bowen of Denton, Md., and Zach and Alex McFarland of Houston; sisters, Linda Crosier of Matthews, N.C., and Peggy Greer of Ferrum, Va.; brothers, Jerry and Ronnie Pinkerton, both of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Joey Pinkerton of Ferrum; special sister-in-law, Charlotte Pinkerton; special nephew, Dennie Pinkerton Jr. of Howey In The Hills, Fla.; and special granddaughter-in-law, Kristy Bowen of Denton.

Stella Lee Miller Riffle

Stella Lee Miller Riffle, 76, of Webster Springs, died Nov. 23, 2008.

Stella was preceded in death by her father, Virgil Miller; brother, Jesse Miller; grandson, Army Sgt. William Curtis “Curt” Riffle; daughter-in-law, Ann Riffle; mother-in-law, Roxie Crites; brother-in-law, Albert Bee; nephew, Mark Miller; and other numerous loved ones, as well as by her beloved pets, Ollie, Chloe, and Austin.

She was a member of Sand Run Baptist Church. She enjoyed sharing the love, grace and mercy of God with her family, friends, students, church family and strangers.

Stella will be remembered as a loving spouse, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and teacher.

She was a Webster County schoolteacher for more than 30 years, graduating from Glenville State College with a B.A. and West Virginia University with an M.A. She began her teaching career in a one-room school down Elk River, teaching also at Grassy Creek, Bergoo, Webster Springs Elementary, Webster Springs special education and gifted classes.

She was active in the Webster Springs Garden Club, helping with the yearly spring and fall nature tours. She was a member of the local historical society and volunteered as a teacher for the Holly River State Park Foundation’s one-room school demonstrations. She also enjoyed her friends of the Retired Teachers Association. Some of her favorite pastimes included painting and writing poetry.

Surviving: her daughter, Shelia Belmont of Morgantown; sons, Bob (Cheryl) Riffle Jr. of Parkersburg, William (Kathy) Riffle of Fayetteville and Larry (Carolyn) Riffle of Cowen; the father of her children, Bob Riffle Sr. of Beckley; granddaughter, Misty (Roy) Lovins of Fayetteville; grandson, Jason Riffle of Charleston; great-grandchildren, Tracey and Cory Lovins, Jason Marek-Riffle, Casie Riffle and Madison Robles-Riffle; her mother, Lela Miller of Webster Springs; sisters, Annalee (Al) Lehman and Martha McCourt; brothers, Charles (Betty) Miller of Ripley, Jack (Dreama) Miller of Madison and Virgil (Susan) Miller of Buckhannon; sister-in-law, Colleen Miller; nephews and nieces; and longtime friends, Michelle, Grace and Charlotte.

Betty Jane Sturgill

Betty Jane Sturgill, 78, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 29, 2008.

Born April 12, 1930, at Mount Hope, she was the daughter of the late Claude V. and Nora Helen Kinser Frost. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, David A. “Hoot” Frost, Charles L. “Pete” Frost, and Robert Clarence “Jack” Frost.

Betty was a retired nurse. She loved her church and her sewing group.

Surviving: her children, Walter Lee Sturgill Jr. of Tampa, Fla., Bill Eugene Sturgill and wife Jeannie of Crab Orchard, and Angel Lee Criss and husband Lee of Mount Hope; grandchildren, Charles Lee Renkivish of Oak Hill and Jeremy Lee Criss and wife Andrea of Huntington; and a brother, C.L. Frost of Sullivan.

Jimmy Roger Taylor

Jimmy Roger Taylor, 76, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 29, 2008, at CAMC Memorial Division in Charleston.

Born Dec. 18, 1931, at Cool Ridge, he was the son of the late Jimmy and Lizzie Compton Taylor.

He was a disabled farmer.

Mr. Taylor attended the Pentecostal Church at Garten.

Surviving: his wife, Helen Peck Taylor; daughters, Anita Taylor of Oak Hill, Mary Army of Nebraska and Patricia Milam of Fayetteville; and 11 grandchildren.

Jacqueline ‘Mim’ Tilley

Jacqueline “Mim” Tilley, 59, of Mount Hope, died Nov. 21, 2008, at the CAMC Memorial Division following a long illness.

Born May 14, 1949, at Cedar Creek, she was the daughter of the late Virgil Lee Tilley and Tressie Blankenship Tilley. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Drema Harrah.

She was a homemaker, and a 15-year resident of Mount Hope.

Surviving: children, Lee Scarberry and wife, Ruth, of Clear Creek, Sherri Meadows and companion, Derrick Woody, of Logan, and Marsha Adkins and husband, James, of Whitby; a brother, Randy Lee Tilley of Lillydale; grandchildren, Cody, Noelle, Amanda Nicole, Scott and Joshua, her granddaughter, “Nikki” had made her home with Mrs. Tilley at Mount Hope, Megan and Mary Sizemore; four great-grandchildren; and a host of loving friends, including her best friend, Shelby Sizemore of Crab Orchard.

Audra Hudson Wriston, 99, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 29, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born April 6, 1909, at Mammoth, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Lurie Grubb Hudson. Her husband, Arlie Ray Wriston, preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1973. She also was preceded by her sisters, Lorena, Geraldine, Levida and Mabel; and her brothers, Harry, Jesse and Joseph.

Mrs. Wriston was the oldest member of the Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill and was a homemaker.

Surviving: daughter, Peggy A. Tassin of Orlando, Fla.; a faithful sister-in-law, Betty Wriston of Mossy; and by several nieces and nephews.

Services were Dec. 3 at the Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill, with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.
