Evelyn Grose Adkins

Evelyn Grose Adkins, 72, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 20, 2008, at Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston.

Born March 6, 1936, at Bluefield, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Ruth Poe Grose. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lowell Adkins, and a brother, Jack R. Grose.

Mrs. Adkins was a retired school teacher, having taught in McDowell, Kanawha and Fayette counties. She also held a West Virginia Realtor’s license.

She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, the Oak Hill United Methodist Church and the White Oak Country Club. She was past president of both the Fayette Study Club and White Oak Garden Club.

Surviving: daughter, Melisa Bennett; granddaughter, Shelli Davis; grandson, Justin Bennett; a great-granddaughter, Savannah; and great-grandson, Gadge.

Graveside rites and committal service was Dec. 23 at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill with Dr. Charles D. Miller officiating. Burial followed.

It was Mrs. Adkins’ request that contributions be made to the Fayette County Animal Shelter in Beckwith or the charity of your choice.

Ronald R. Berry Sr.

Ronald R. Berry Sr., 61, of Route 1, Fayetteville, died Dec. 20, 2008, at his home.

Born June 1, 1947, at Lawton, he was the son of the late Ira C. and Mae V. Jones Berry.

He was a retired locomotive assemblyman for General Motors. Mr. Berry was a member of the UAW in LaGrange, Ill.

Mr. Berry was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, and was a recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Surviving: his wife of 40 years, Alice F. Jenkins Berry; a son, Ronald R. Berry Jr. of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Amanda M. Berry of Oak Hill; brothers and sisters, Barbara Brooks and husband Junior of Beckley, Jane Fernatt and husband Lonnie of Meadow Bridge, Roger Berry and wife Brenda of Rock Lick, Randy Berry and wife Connie of Minden, Darlene Humphrey and husband Roger of Hilltop, and Drema Atkins and husband Larry of Robson; and grandchildren, Alayna Scarbro and Aden Scarbro, both of Oak Hill.

Graveside rites and committal service were Dec. 27 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Beckley with the Rev. Wayne Nutter officiating. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Veoma P. Morris Bowles

Veoma P. Morris Bowles, 74, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 25, 2008, following a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 4, 1934, at Thayer, she was the daughter of the late William E. “Ernie” and Annie Avancini Morris. She was married to the late Benjamen Dewey Bowles. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Louis E. Bowles, and a daughter, Teresa Sharp, both of whom passed in 2005.

Vee, as she was well known to many, was a lifetime resident of Fayette County. She was a most special devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Previously employed during the 1980s with the Raleigh County Home Health, she continued her caring and loving ways with her heart of gold, providing extended care to many before they left earth to join the ranks of the angels in Heaven.

She was well known for her special delicious Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners where family and friends would gather in large numbers to partake of these feasts.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving: her son, Danny R. Bowles and wife Carol of Mount Hope; a daughter, Malinda Toney and husband Preston of Oak Hill; sisters, Eloise Harvey of Hilltop, and Imogene Redden and Shelby Carrol, both of Warren, Mich.; a brother, William “Bill” Morris and wife Jeri of Meadow Bridge; grandchildren, Steve Bowles, Jerilea Sizemore, Ashely Logan, Anita Denton, Beth Ann Perry, Irene Poff, Billy Humphrey, and Darrell Sharp Jr.; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside rites and committal services were Dec. 28 at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill with the Rev. Robert Barley officiating. Burial followed. At the close of the service, white doves were released in celebration of her life and Heavenly journey.

Nadine H. Johnson Brackman

Nadine H. Johnson Brackman, 84, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 23, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Oct. 13, 1924, at Danville, she was the daughter of the late John and Lydia Kinder Johnson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Arthur Brackman; a granddaughter, Rebecca Brackman; a sister, Louise Johnson; and brothers, William, Forrest, Malcolm and Frank Johnson.

She was the former owner of Brackman Grocery Store in Peytona.

Mrs. Brackman was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church and the Women’s Circle at the church. She was a Zeta Master of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority of Oak Hill, having been a member for 45 years.

Surviving: sons, David A. Brackman and wife Roberta of Houston, Texas, and Donald J. Brackman and wife Jamie of Nineveh, Ind.; a daughter, Linda DeBord and husband Bonner of Oak Hill; brothers, Charles S. Johnson of Hendersonville, N.C., and Ralph Johnson of Pineville; sister, Marguerite Salerno of Hendersonville, N.C.; grandchildren, Donna Brackman, Melissa Duke, Jeanette Biddle, David DeBord, Michelle Montgomery, Dana Martin and Michael Brackman; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Justin, Chase, Drew, Alexa, Karlie, Donald, Madison and Nathan; and a great-great-grandson, Braylon.

Raymond Fredrick Brown

Raymond Fredrick Brown, also known as “Jeep” and “Old Goat,” died Dec. 22, 2008, following a brief illness.

Born in Russellville, he was the son of Lorena Wright Brown and the late Ralph O. Brown. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Ann Barr; and grandparents, Luther and Betty Brown and Charlie and Mae Wright.

Raymond was a lifelong resident of Russellville.

He was a Marine and a retired coal miner.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: his wife of 41 years, Mary Sue Grubbs Brown; sons, Michael Allen and Kristina Ray Brown of Russellville, Russell Edward and Dawn Neal Brown of Lincolnton, N.C., Daniel Scott and Pam Hefner Brown of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Jessie, Angel, Nathan and Johnathan; brothers, Gary Wayne of Stafford, Va., and Dennis Lee and wife Becky of Russellville; sisters, Nancy Mae Brown of Covington, Ohio, Lenora Uhrig and husband, Ronnie, of Bolivia, N.C., Patricia Kay and Paul Copfer of Kerns, Utah, Connie Sue and Edmond Starcher of Providence Forge, Va.; a dear aunt, Margarette Boley and Uncle Vernon of Russellville; and extended family members, Rhonda and Grover Wilson, Phyllis and Judy Grubbs, Cleatus and Herman Engfer and David, Mitchel and Hurkie, Larry and Debbie, Charles and Sussie, Donnie and Brenda Grubbs.

John Thomas Cody Sr.

John Thomas Cody Sr., 59, of Rt. 1, Fayetteville, died Dec. 19, 2008, at his home.

Born May 18, 1949, at Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Edwin and Goldie Rorabaugh Cody.

Mr. Cody was a construction laborer.

Surviving: son, John T. Cody Jr. of Maryland; daughter, Sonya Cody of Virginia; his companion, Patricia Bland and her daughters, Brenda Taylor and Tammy King, both of Fayetteville; a brother, David Cody of Marietta, Ohio; sisters, Imogene Abachit of Beverly, Ohio, and Patsy Light and June Beebe, both of Virginia; and grandchildren, Crystal Taylor, Michael Taylor and Joshua King.

Services were Dec. 24 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Larry Humphrey officiating. Cremation followed.

Roger Crowder

Roger Crowder, 66, of Fayetteville, died Dec. 18, 2008, at the Fayette Nursing & Rehab Center, Fayetteville, following a long illness.

Rev. Elmer Warren Day Sr.

The Rev. Elmer Warren Day Sr. of Mocksville, N.C., died Dec. 16, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Born July 27, 1921, in Warrensville, N.C., he was the son of the late Jesse and Bonnie Wyatt Day. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Blanche Powers and Pauline Bailey; and a brother, Verner Day.

He was a member and Pastor Emeritus of Cornatzer Baptist Church.

Preacher Day served as pastor of Cornatzer Baptist Church in Davie County for 36 years. He also served as pastor at Smith Grove Baptist Church in Davidson County, N.C., and at Lookout Baptist Church in Fayette County.

In addition to his pastoral ministry, the Rev. Day taught at Piedmont Baptist College in Winston-Salem, N.C., and was an emeritus member of the General Council of Baptist Mid-Missions in Cleveland, Ohio.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served under Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines during World War II.

Surviving: his wife of 59 years, Hope McClung Day; children, Bonnie (David) Washburn, Warren (Junette) Day, Danny (Jane) Day and Lois (Larry) Carter; grandchildren, Amy, Davy, Andy, Jason, Jennifer, Justin, Clint, Sara and Hope; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Trevor, Tyler, Nathaniel, Aubrey, Cade and Timothy; a sister, Daphine Acord; and a brother, the Rev. Robert Day.

Preacher Day’s life and service were honored and remembered at Cornatzer Baptist Church on Dec. 20, with Pastor Jeff Beverly officiating.

Dino Shawndale Garten

Dino Shawndale Garten, 36, of Page, formerly of Lester, died Dec. 20, 2008, at his home.

Born June 28, 1972, at Beckley, he was the son of Margaret L. Hundley Dolin and her husband, Junior Ray, of Page, and Bewey MacArthur Garten Jr. and wife Jennifer of Lester.

His maternal grandparents, Dorothy and Clarence Hundley; paternal grandparents, Marie and Bewey Garten; and a sister, Novella Garten, preceded him in death.

He was a construction laborer.

Dino was raised in Lester and attended Liberty High School. He worked quite a bit in Indiana, then moved back to West Virginia, currently residing in Page.

Surviving, in addition to his parents: his sisters, Loretta Cole and husband Troy of Fairdale and Robin Morgan and husband Darrell of Pennsylvania; a brother, Timothy Garten of Sturgis, Mich.; a special aunt and uncle with whom he lived while in Indiana, Sue and Johnny Garten; and by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Service was Dec. 26 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Randy McGuire officiating. Burial was at Bibb Cemetery, Gatewood, W.Va.

Steven Joe Hamilton Sr.

Steven Joe Hamilton Sr., 50, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 21, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Oct. 13, 1958, at Welch, he was the son of the late George and Maxine Moxley Hamilton.

Steven was a long distance truck driver for Warrior Express.

Surviving: his wife, Elaine Harris Hamilton; sons, Rick Blevins and wife Nicole of Mount Hope, and Steven Hamilton Jr. and wife Jamie of Cool Ridge; brothers, Johnny Hamilton and wife Judy of Glen Daniel and Mickey Hamilton and wife Eva of Welch; sisters, Pam Mosley of Woodbridge, Va., and Sandy Bradford of Welch; grandchildren, Brandon Blevins, Trinity Hamilton, Abigail Hamilton, Rick Dillon Blevins, Stevie Jo Hamilton and Cara Marie Blevins.

Beverly ‘Diane’ Beardsley Jewell

Beverly “Diane” Beardsley Jewell, 59, of Pax, died Dec. 24, 2008, at CAMC, Memorial Division, in Charleston.

Born Nov. 30, 1949, at Charleston, she was the daughter of Lyle and Joyce Stewart Beardsley of Pax.

She retired from Baxter’s and Motorola.

Mrs. Jewell attended the Maple Fork Baptist Church. She loved playing Bingo.

Her husband, John Robert Jewell, preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 2008.

Surviving: sons, Alan Jewell and wife Lori of Spring Grove, Ill., Glen Jewell and wife Leah of Ingleside, Ill., Bryan Jewell and wife Beth of McHenry, Ill., and Aaron Jewell and wife Jody of Spring Grove, Ill.; sisters, Karen Elaine Beardsley of Waukegan, Ill., and Sandra Williams of Cookeville, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.

John Robert Jewell

John Robert Jewell, 63, of Pax, died Dec. 22, 2008, at home.

Born April 23, 1945, at Maple Fork, he was the son of the late Johnny Newton and Nina Hale Jewell.

He was a retired machinist for ITW of Glenview, Ill.

Mr. Jewell was a member of the Maple Fork Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era, having attained the rank of SP4.

Two brothers, Wallace Jewell and Jerry Jewell, and a sister, Janet Jewell, preceded him in death. Following Mr. Jewell’s death, his wife, Beverely Diane Beardsley Jewell, passed away on Dec. 24, 2008.

Edna Florence Lemon

Edna Florence Lemon, 80, of Rainelle, died Dec. 24, 2008.

Born Oct. 9, 1928, at Jodie, she was the daughter of the late James V. and Florence Pierson Steele. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Lemon; a daughter, Jennifer Lemon; a son-in-law, Tony Marchi; and a brother, Vernon Steele.

Edna was a retired G.C. Murphy clerk, a member of the Rainelle Red Hat Dollies, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Rainelle.

Surviving: sons, Jimmie Lemon and wife Betty of Springdale and Kevin Lemon and wife Deborah of Oak Hill; daughters, Guinevere Marchi of Stuarts Draft, Va., Shelley Grapes and husband David of Reading, Pa., and Colleen Acord and husband John of Beckley; sisters, Donna Peck of Wilmington, Del., and Charlotte Skaggs and husband Ronald of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Matthew Grapes and wife Amy, Joseph Grapes and wife Karla, Katharine Grapes and fiance Bob Daniels, Desiree Lemon, Joshua Lemon, Molly and Jack Acord; a great-granddaughter, Eva Grapes; and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley Sylvia Richardson Propps

Shirley Sylvia Richardson Propps, 73, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 24, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born Dec. 3, 1935, at Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Loyd and Mary Lucy Richardson. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Annette Elliott; brothers, Lonnie Mitchell Richardson and Segard Richardson; sister, Sondra Blankenship; and a stepson, Rick Dana Edwards.

Surviving: her husband, Randy Propps of Oak Hill; her children, Michael Stevens of Phoenix, Ariz., Arlene Thomas of Princeton and Loyd Stevens of Marietta, Ohio; stepdaughters, Eileen Bullock of Alpine, Texas, and Elaine Greenawalt of Marion, Ohio; stepson, Roger Edwards of Marion, Ohio; 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Anna (Tootsie) Crookshanks Meador Ramsey

Anna (Tootsie) Crookshanks Meador Ramsey, 87, of Sunday Road, Victor, died Dec. 27, 2008, at Summersville Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness.

Born Nov. 15, 1921, at Ramsey, she was the daughter of the late John Lloyd and Elizabeth (Betty) Crookshanks. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Haskell Meador; her second husband, Lewis Ramsey; sisters, Lottie Boley, Mattie Hess, Kate Painter, and Dorothy Crookshanks; and brothers, Ortie, Bert, Bill, and Charley Crookshanks.

Anna was a member of the Richmond Chapel Methodist Church and was a homemaker. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.

Surviving: daughters, Eva Legg (Bill) of Hudson, Fla., Barbara Nichols (David) of Green Camp, Ohio, and Sharon Meador of Marion, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Marti Brown of Marion; sons, James Kyle (Diana) Meadows of Marion, and Lewis Edward Ramsey of Ramsey; a stepson, Richard (Joyce) Ramsey of Marion; nine grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services were Dec. 30 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Ansted, with Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating. Burial followed at Richmond Chapel Church Cemetery at Ramsey.

Glenda Gay Armstrong Sloan

Glenda Gay Armstrong Sloan, 68, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 25, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Aug. 30, 1940, at Carbondale, she was the daughter of Thelma Jean Baber Armstong of Mount Hope, and the late Joseph Robert Armstrong. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Darrell Armstong.

She was a disabled agent for Peoples Life Insurance.

Surviving, in addition to her mother: her husband of 48 years, Robert R. Sloan; sons, Richard Dale Catlett of Dunlow and Robert Keith Sloan and wife, Sarah, of Columbia, Ky.; daughters, Ronda Gay Falk and husband, Tim, of Oak Hill, Neysa Renee Green and husband, Ricky, of Whitesville, Karen Ann Sloan and companion, Kevin Phillips, of Fayetteville, and Susan Dawn DiGiacomo of Tampa, Fla.; brothers and sisters, Patricia Armstrong of Scarbro, Loretta Stover of Oak Hill, Lake Armstrong of Dalton, Ga., Mary Bishop of Dalton, Ga., Jesse Armstrong of Mount Hope, Ronnie Armstong of Mount Hope, Tommy Armstong of Mount Hope, and Stevie Armstong of Glen Jean; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were Dec. 28 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Morris Nutter officiating. Cremains will be interred at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens at a later date.

Morine Elizabeth Small

Morine Elizabeth Small, 87, of Winona, died Dec. 21, 2008, following a long illness.

Born Sept. 7, 1921, at Beury Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Charles Richard and Annie Mae Young. She also was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Herbert Clyde Small; and by nine brothers and sisters.

Surviving: sons, Donald and his wife Carol of Manassas, Va., William Small of Richmond, Va., and Timothy and his wife, Pamela, of Powhatan, Va.; granddaughters, Kimberly and her husband, Marty Pearson, of Manassas, and Ashley Small of Powhatan; great-granddaughters, Amanda and Amy Pearson of Manassas; sister, Gertrude Small of New Orleans, La.; and brother, Loren Young of Fayetteville.

Funeral service was Dec. 27 at the Chapel of Rest Mausoleum Chapel, Victor, with the Rev. Joe Shaffer officiating. Interment followed in the Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Martha A. Morst Smith

Mrs. Martha A. Morst Smith, 95, of Mt. Hope, died Dec. 23, 2008, at the Charleston General Hospital, after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 14, 1913, in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Jones Morst. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Smith; a daughter, Joan Cureton-Carson; a son, Leroy Smith; a stepson, Samuel Smith Jr.; twin brother and sister-in-law, Elder Joseph Morst and wife Inez; a granddaughter, Doncia Littlejohn; a grandson, Rev. Sonny Smith; and brother-in-law, Rufus Wilson.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and caregiver, having taken care of her mother, aunt, and husband.

She was a longtime member of the Glorious Church of God in Christ, Mt. Hope, under the pastoralship of the late Bishop W.A. Wilson and present Pastor Bishop John Grant. She also served the church in the positions of deaconess and missionary.

Surviving: a son, Truman Smith (Shirley) of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister, Daisy Wilson of Hamilton, Ohio; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she helped raised. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, her Glorious Church family, friends, neighbors, and caregivers in and around the Fayette County area.

Homegoing services were Dec. 30 at the Glorious Church of God in Christ, Mt. Hope, with Bishop John Grant officiating.

Dessie Deloris Naylor Thomas

Dessie Deloris Naylor Thomas, 85, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 25, 2008, at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Oak Hill.

Born Oct. 8, 1923, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Burma Morton Naylor. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Eugene “Zeke” Thomas, on April 25, 1990; brothers, Damon, Dencil, and Don Naylor; and sisters, Dormal and Veda.

Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church. She was a member of the Women's International Bowling Conference and was a 1942 graduate of Gauley Bridge High School.

Surviving: her sons, Wayne A. Thomas and Clinton Thomas; a stepson, Gary Thomas; grandsons, Derek, Wesley, and Kyle; and a step granddaughter, Jennifer.

Services was Dec. 28 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. David Sneed officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
