Betty Jo Adams

Betty Jo Adams, 77, of Corliss, died Jan. 1, 2008, at home following a short illness.

Born March 13, 1931, in Laurel Creek, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mabel Teresa Pitsenbarger Carter. She also was preceded in death by sisters, Nancy Nelson and Frankie Spinks; a grandson, Jonathan Adams; and a great-granddaughter, Bethany Carol Adams.

Betty was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, making pillows, canning, and she dearly loved her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving: daughter, Karen Rider and husband Ted of Corliss; sons, Charles W. Carter Sr. and wife Tricia of Apopka, Fla., and Timothy Adams and wife Carol, Terry Adams and wife Marsha, and Scott Adams and wife Juanita, all of Corliss; grandchildren, Charles W. Carter Jr., Myra Roach, Michelle Harmon, Michael Adams, Shawn Adams, Matthew Rider, April Adams, Nathan Rider, Shane Carter, and Chad Carter; and great-grandchildren, Brittany Adams, Erica Rider, Nicholas Adams, Caitlin Rider, Samuel Roach, Owen Roach, Evan Carter, and Brendan Carter.

Services were Jan. 6 at the Minnie Belle Baptist Church in Corliss with Pastor Gene Bennett officiating. Burial followed in the Bethel Cemetery in Corliss.

Lahoma Naomi Burns Barnett

Lahoma Naomi Burns Barnett, 90 years and 10 months of age, died at the home of her son, Charles, in Beckley, Dec. 31, 2008.

Born Feb. 23, 1918, at Clairmont, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Mary M. Alley Burns. She also was preceded in death by all her siblings; her husband of 55 years, Howard Barnett, in 1989; grandsons, Ernest Bea “Rastis” Taylor and Richard K. Taylor; and a great-grandson, Justin Sean Taylor.

Lahoma lived in Layland, Rainelle, and Meadow Bridge, where she resided until the last few months. She loved people, her church, crocheting and OES.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Meadow Bridge, where she was secretary and treasurer for several years. She was a 60-year member of OES Chapter No. 135 in Danese, where she served as Worthy Matron three times.

Surviving: her children, Helen Joan Taylor of Danese, Barbara L. Taylor of Layland, Darrell H. Barnett and wife Joe Ann of Raleigh, N.C., Roger L. Barnett and wife Diana of Bluefield, Charles Barnett and companion Carol of Beckley, David Barnett of Oak Hill, Barry “Rick” Barnett and wife Karen of Richmond, Va., and Joan E. Gilkerson and husband James of Harrisonburg, Va.; grandchildren, Nancy, Wayne, Cheryl, Gary, William, Curtis, Alan, Jimmy, Lolita, Monica, Tina, Kevin, Thomas, Aimee, Roger Jr., Austin, Taft, Sarah, Emily, Christopher, Justin, and Jared; 30 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral services were Jan. 4 at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle with the Rev. Ferlin McClanahan and Rev. Bennie Kenney officiating.

Blannie Ruth Barber Bush

Blannie Ruth Barber Bush of Thomasville, Ga., died Dec. 29, 2008, at Glen Mor Nursing Home.

Born March 26, 1924, in Berrien County, she was the daughter of the late John E. Barber and Lou Benefield. She was married to Cleveland Bush, who also preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were a son, Billy Franklin Bush, and sisters, Leona Lindsey and Eula Lee Blount.

Mrs. Bush was a homemaker, and attended Nazarene Church and Vickers Holiness Church.

Surviving: daughter, Mary E. Locklear of Dallas, Ga.; sons, Rev. Jerry Bush of Oak Hill and James Edward Bush of Waynesville, Ga.; daughters, Ellen L. Culpepper of Pavo, Ga., Jean C. Davis of Marianna, Fla., and Judy Stanaland of Middleburg, Fla.; son, Randy T. Bush of Thomasville; daughters, Teresa Hartsfield of Florida and Darlene Kucksdorf of San Antonio, Texas; 24 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were Jan. 2 at Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Mann, the Rev. Charles Wolfe, and Pastor Morris Pittman officiating. Interment followed in Vickers Chapel Cemetery in Nashville.

Gertrude Mary Seletyn Canterbury

Gertrude Mary Seletyn Canterbury, 89, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 4, 2009, at the Hilltop Center.

She was the daughter of the late John and Ocie Seletyn. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Canterbury Sr., in 1984; brothers, Bill and Fred Seletyn; a sister, Margie Arthur; a daughter-in-law, Jane Canterbury; and son-in-law, Robert Martin.

Franklin D. ‘Doodle’ Comer

Franklin Delano “Doodle” Comer, 75, of Fayetteville, died Dec. 28, 2008, at CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston, following a short illness.

Born July 27, 1933, at Eagle, he was the son of the late Joseph Lee Comer and Theora Chester Ware Comer. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Laveeda Hubbard, Ruth Fair and Barbara Null; and brothers, Joseph Comer and Dennis Comer.

He was retired from WV Institute of Technology, where he served 34 years as grounds maintenance foreman. He also served in the U.S. Army.

He enjoyed going to flea markets and making others laugh with his unique way of joke telling. Most of all, he enjoyed attending church at the First Church of God, Fayetteville.

Surviving: his wife of 52 years, Lessie Virginia Elmore Comer of Fayetteville; daughter, D. “Jeanie” Martin and companion Keith Pack of Oak Hill; son, Franklin Allen Comer and wife Sandra of Oak Hill; sisters, Margaret Hartwell of Powellton and Jean Taylor of Belva; grandchildren, Amanda Williams of Porterville, Calif., and Corey Comer of Oak Hill; great-grandchild, Jasmine Romero of Porterville, Calif.; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral service was Jan. 3 at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Bob Coulter officiating. Entombment followed in High Lawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Anna L. Doan

Anna L. Doan, of Lee Hollow, Springdale, died Jan. 1, 2009, at her home.

Born Oct. 11, 1928, in Lee Hollow, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Mollie Gill Estep.

She spent her youth in West Virginia. As a teenager, she met her husband of 63 years, Bob Doan, while he was on liberty during World War II in Portsmouth, Va. Most of Anna’s adult life was spent in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where she and Bob raised their two children.

Anna’s goal in life was to help others and she worked tirelessly to improve her community. She volunteered and served as president of the local PTA. She was an active member of the Dania Heights Baptist Church, Dania, Fla., where she helped with Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She loved music and spent many fulfilling years as a member of the church choir. She visited the sick and cared for her loved ones. After she returned to Meadow Bridge in 2000, her health began to fall. She was a member of the Springdale Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, Bob: her son, Mark S. Doan; her daughter, Deborah St. Sing and son-in-law, Terrence St. Sing; sisters, Ramona Lampell and Sue Horton; and her many friends and family here in West Virginia and across the country.

Service was Jan. 7 at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvie Edwards officiating. Burial followed in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.

Ruth Bragg Dodd

Ruth Bragg Dodd, 94, of Martinez, Ga., formerly of Fayetteville, died Dec. 30, 2008, at Doctors Hospital, Augusta, Ga.

Born June 2, 1914, in Kincaid, she was the daughter of the late Jobe Franklin Bragg and the late Cora Kincaid Bragg. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Chauncy Harold Dodd Sr.

Ruth was an active member for many years with the Fayetteville United Methodist Church, where she served as the church auditor, and as a member and chairperson of the UMW Dream Circle.

She was a graduate of Oak Hill High School and of Stella Boothe Secretarial School in Huntington. Mrs. Dodd served as a legal secretary to the late Frank Mahan and, for a number of years, served as the magistrate clerk of Fayette County until her retirement at age 82.

Ruth lived in Fayetteville until late 2004, when she moved to Augusta, Ga., so her son could better care for her medical needs.

Surviving: son, C. Harold Dodd Jr. and daughter-in-law Mary Jane of Martinez; grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Dodd and wife Melanie of Swannanoa, N.C., and Jason Harold Dodd and wife Heather of Cumming, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Skyler Nicole Dodd and Jacob River Dodd of Swannanoa; sister, Mary Evelyn Alberchinski of Fayetteville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services was Jan. 3 at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn of the Fayetteville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was held in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, immediately following.

Paul Junior Gardner

Paul Junior Gardner, 63, of Mill Creek, Mount Hope, died Dec. 31, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born June 30, 1945, at Laurel Creek, he was the son of the late Cecil Arvil and Rosetta Mae Ward Gardner. A brother, Lee Gene Gardner, and a sister, Nancy Lee Gardner, also preceded him in death.

He was a debarker for the Jim C. Hamer Company at Garden Grounds.

Mr. Gardner was a member of the First Baptist Church at Scarbro where he served on the board of trustees and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving: wife, Rena Gay Gardner; daughters, Annette Fay Gardner of St. Albans, and April Rena Christy and husband Don Edward Jr., and Rhonda Ann Gardner, all of Mill Creek; brothers, Donald Gardner of Prince and Ronald Gardner of Layland; sisters, Linda Garrison of Beckley and Debbie Adkins of Layland; and grandchildren, Brad Foster of Mill Creek, Margaret Toney, Eric Toney, and Alec Toney, all of St. Albans, and Ashley Gardner, Amanda Gardner, Josey Christy and Madison Kincaid, all of Mill Creek.

Virginia Auxier Kincaid

Virginia Auxier Kincaid, 89, of Meadow Bridge, died Dec. 31, 2008, in the Bowers Hospice House at Beckley.

Edward Joseph Martin

Edward Joseph Martin, 80, of Mount Hope, died Dec. 31, 2008, in his sleep at the Summers County Continuous Care center, following a seven-year battle against Alzheimer’s disease.

Born April 20, 1928, in Mount Hope, he was the son of the late Verner “V.L.” Martin and Zelma Feazell Martin. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Martin Donahoe; a brother, William “Bill” Martin and Bill’s wife, Betty; and by a brother-in-law, Ralph Dorsey.

Edward, upon graduation from Mount Hope High School, continued to help run the “White Oak Dairy,” the family dairy in Bradley. He worked for the New River Company, Owens Manufacturing, Ohio Valley, and Beckley Welding.

Edward had a special talent and could fix anything, hence the title “Mr. Fix-It-Man” was bestowed upon him by his granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Edward will be lovingly remembered for all he did for his family and friends.

Edward had been a lifelong member of the Mount Hope United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school superintendent for many years.

Surviving: the love of his life for 60 years, his wife, Winona “Jewell” Bressler Martin; his daughter, Debra “Debbie” Lynn Gordon of Norfolk, Va.; sons, James Edward Martin and his wife, Judy, of Maryland, and Gerald Wayne “Jerry” Martin and his wife, Lorri, of Beckley; a grandson, Samuel Edward Martin; loving granddaughters, “Amy” Lynn Gordon Wargo and her husband, Joseph William “Jay” Wargo Jr., of Virginia Beach, Va., Elizabeth Jewel Gordon of Norfolk, Va., and Ashley Nicole Martin of Beckley; great-grandchildren, Bailey Madison Wargo and Joseph William “Will” Wargo III of Virginia Beach, and Anthony James “A.J.” Martin; sisters, Peggy Dorsey of Mount Hope and Patty Parker and her husband, Mal, of Mount Hope; a brother, Robert “Bob” Martin and his wife, Sue, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; eight nieces, five nephews, and their respective families.

A celebration of life was conducted Jan. 4 at the Mount Hope Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dan Johnson and the Rev. Elizabeth Stone officiating. Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Cordis William Pitsenbarger

Cordis William “C.W.” Pitsenbarger, 84, of Nallen, died Jan. 4, 2009, at Summersville Memorial Hospital, after suffering a massive heart attack.

JoAnne Peterson

JoAnne Peterson, 69, of Hilltop, died Jan. 3, 2009, in Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

Born in Spencer, she was the daughter of the late Victor and Arthelia Mace Williams. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Peterson; a sister and two brothers.

Surviving: daughters, Elizabeth Statler and Brenda Shrader; son, Mark Statler; sister and brother-in-law, Dianna and Ray Neal; and brothers and sister-in-law, Maurice and Nancy Williams, and David Williams.

Services were Jan. 6 in the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia, Ohio. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Sandyville, Ohio.

Charles Edward Powers

Charles Edward Powers, 74, of Elkton, Md., died Dec. 28, 2008, in Christiana Care Medical Center, Newark, Del.

Born Jan. 21, 1934, in Fayette County, he was a son of the late Layman A. and Ruby M. Henderson Powers. Mr. Powers also was preceded in death by his wife, Sona Kaye Powers; brothers, Robert Powers and Harold Powers; and sister, Louise Knight.

Mr. Powers was employed as a service manager by Anchor Buick Pontiac of Elkton, a member of the Baldwin United Methodist Church of Elkton, an avid Nascar fan, and very much enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving: his daughter, Vanessa Brown and her husband, Robert, of Elkton, Md.; son, Grant Powers and his wife, Karen, of Grand Blanc, Mich.; daughter, Sylvia Kilroy and her husband, Brian, of Hockessin, Del.; son, Jeff Powers and his wife, Marcia, of Elkton; 14 grandchildren; and a sister, Eileen Kessler, of Mount Hope.

Cammie O. Sevy

Cammie O. Sevy, 85, of Corliss, died Dec. 31, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born May 9, 1923, in Ravens Eye Road, she was the daughter of the late Albert Levaro and Grace McClelland Hiser.

Cammie was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ of Rainelle.

Surviving: daughter, Joan Carleton Murray and husband Louis of Syracuse, N.Y.; son, Noah John Sevy Jr. and wife Sandra of Corliss; sister, Francis Martin of Corliss; and grandson, Charles Carleton of Syracuse, N.Y.

Vivian Farris Shrewsbury

Vivian Farris Shrewsbury, 89, of Iron Station, N.C., formerly of Glen Morgan, died Dec. 28, 2008, at CMC Lincoln Medical Center in Lincolnton, N.C.

Born Jan. 17, 1919, at Scarbro, she was the daughter of the late VanBuren Madison and Bessie Farris. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Jesse Shrewsbury; a daughter, Anne Brubaker; a son, Ricky Allen Shrewsbury; and a sister, Mae Farris Shrewsbury.

Mrs. Shrewsbury was a homemaker.

Surviving: sons, Jesse Shrewsbury and wife Betty of Vale, N.C., Ray Shrewsbury and wife Sue of Scarbro, Dale Shrewsbury and wife Goldie, and Darrell Shrewsbury and wife Lisa, all of Raleigh; daughters, Eliza Reynolds and husband Wheeler of South Daytona Beach, Fla., Melissa Young and husband John of Iron Station, Brenda Allen and husband Clyde of Chiefland, Fla., and Jeannie Bennett and husband Dale of King, N.C.; half-brothers, Jake Farris of Pax, Bub Farris of North Carolina, and Charlie Farris of Pax; half-sisters, Liz Farris of Bradley and Pat Farris of Pax; 22 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

William F. Terchek

William F. Terchek, 95, of Minden, died Jan. 2, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, after a long illness.

Born April 18, 1913, in Forest City, Pa., he was the son the late Frank and Frances Moser Terchek. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Potter Terchek, on Nov. 10, 1992; and by brothers, Frank, August, and Adolph Terchek.

Mr. Terchek retired from the maintenance department at Montgomery General Hospital. He was a member of the Oak Hill Fellowship Memorial Baptist Church.

Mr. Terchek was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of VFW Post No. 3110 at Oak Hill.

Surviving: stepdaughters, Helen Wolfe of Standard, Nina Clark of Moreno, Calif., and Jean Sharp of Oak Hill; adopted son, Richard Terchek of Concord, N.C.; a special grandson, Gary Sharp Sr., and a great-grandson, Gary Sharp Jr., both of Minden; a sister, Dorothy Terchek of Forest City, Pa.; and special caregivers, Angela Sharp of Minden and Debra Bibb of Oak Hill.

Norma Orndorff Underwood

Norma Orndorff Underwood, 69, of Lookout, died Dec. 30, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a short illness.

Born Jan. 16, 1939, at Lookout, she was the youngest daughter of the late Robert and Melba Ellison Orndorff. She also was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Dale Underwood.

Norma was a cook at the Sheltering Arms Nursing Home, Fayetteville. She did a lot of caring for the elderly, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving: daughter, Beverly Underwood of Fayetteville; son, Clinton Underwood of North Carolina; sisters, Annabell Cavendish and husband Dickie of Rainelle, and Margaret Madden and husband Chester of Huntington; brother, Frank Orndorff and wife Frances of Leslie; special nephew, Steve of Ansted; and grandchildren, Greg, Wade, Alexander, Cameron, Conner, Kaitlyn, Clint, William and Brooke.

Funeral service was Jan. 2 at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Ansted. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Jo Ann Hendrick Wickline

Jo Ann Hendrick Wickline, 75, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 28, 2008, at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston.

Born June 24, 1933, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Walker Treadway and Ida Mae Morris Treadway. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, John H. “Pete” Henrick; and brothers, Leonard Treadway, Calvin Treadway, Walker Treadway Jr., who was killed in World War II, and Oather Treadway.

Jo Ann was a charter member of the Missionary Alliance Church in Oak Hill where she has served as deaconess for many years. Jo Ann loved the Lord and her church family. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Wickline; her children, Johnny Hendrick and wife Roxanne of Oak Hill, Tommy Hendrick and wife Debbie of Fayetteville, Nancy McCarthy and husband Danny of Bradley, and Susan Aliff and husband Lyle of Oak Hill; stepchildren, Michael Wickline and wife Mickie of Galena, Mo., Mark Wickline, and Amanda Wickline, both of Branson, Mo.; sisters, Mildred Scott of Leesburg, Fla., and Betty Murphy and husband Fred of Oak Hill; brothers, Shirley Treadway and wife JoAnn of Fayetteville, Harold Treadway and wife Kay of Fayetteville, and Arnold Treadway and wife Rosalee of Scarbro; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was Dec. 31 at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Fred Joseph and Pastor Albert Bowman officiating. Entombment followed in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Lucille Theresa Lowe Wolford

Lucille Theresa Lowe Wolford, 88, of Gatewood, died Dec. 27, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

Born Feb. 17, 1920, in Logan County, she was the daughter of the late George and Pearl Criche Lowe. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Wolford; brothers, Moss Lowe and George Lowe Jr.; and a sister, Della Newland.

She was a homemaker and a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill.

Surviving: her daughter, Sharon Lynn Humphreys and husband Shelby of Gatewood; a special niece, Cheryl Ball and husband Jimmy of Portage, Ind.; grandchildren, John David Humphreys of Beaver, and Regina Ball and Becky Ball Cubbison of Portage, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Megan Nichols Humphreys, Brittany Ball, Kayla Ball, Shawna Ball, Zack Cubbison and Jacob Cubbison; brother, William Lowe of Chapmanville; and sisters, Sarah Lowe of Rt. 1, Fayetteville, and Sylvia Browning of Man.

Services were Dec. 30 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill, with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Burial was in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Eloise Yost

Eloise Yost, 85, of Oak Hill, died peacefully Jan. 4, 2009, at Hidden Valley.

Born Aug. 27, 1923, in Allegheny, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles Gretsinger and Catherine Miller Gretsinger. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Deane; and brothers, William, Wayne, Vernon and Gilbert Gretsinger. Eloise was the last survivor of her immediate family.

She was a former member of Fincastle Baptist Church in Tazewell and had worked for the Tazewell Community Hospital.

Eloise loved her three great-grandchildren and they meant the world to her. She also was an avid sports fan; she loved to watch her baseball, especially the Cleveland Indians.

Surviving: her daughter, Darlene Humphrey and husband Johnnie of Oak Hill; grandchildren, John Humphrey and wife Paula, and Jay Humphrey and fiancée Tabitha; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Zackary, and Caden; and a special niece, Debbie Ogle and husband Bob of Strongsville, Ohio.

A graveside service was held Jan. 7 at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Joe Hoggard officiating.
