Michael Wayne Adkins

Michael Wayne Adkins, 38, of Ingram Branch, died May 28, 2009, at his home.

Born Oct. 22, 1970, at Montgomery, he was the son of Carlos Adkins Sr. of Ingram Branch, and the late Patricia Taylor and stepson of Laura Adkins.

He was a correctional officer for the Federal Bureau of Prisons at Beaver.

Mr. Adkins was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Oak Hill.

He was a former employee of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Michael had been accepted for admission to study at the Appalachian Bible Institute in Bradley.

Surviving, in addition to his father and step-mother: a daughter, Haleigh B. Adkins of Fayetteville; brother, Carlos Adkins Jr. and wife Heather of Fayetteville; sister, Tina Maynor and husband Evan of Oak Hill; step-sisters, Melissa Perdue and husband Anthony of Mount Hope, Autumn Ballard and husband Braxon of Fayetteville, Deean Dingler of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Denece Stanton of Charleston; and step-brothers, Derek Stanton of North Carolina and Dell Stanton of Fredericksburg, Va.

Services were June 1 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill with Pastor David Richardson officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites by VFW Post #3110 of Oak Hill.

Ofelia G. Cannon

Ofelia G. Cannon, 79, of Oak Hill, formerly of Andalusia, Ala., died at home on May 6, 2009, in Oak Hill.

Born Sept. 23, 1929, in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, she was preceded in death by her husband, Euel Pete Cannon.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill.

Surviving: a brother and sister, Antonio Garcia Saucedo and Irma Garcia Saucedo of Saltillo, Mexico; stepchildren, Linda Tucker, Eddie Cannon, and Pete Cannon of Andalusia, Ala.; and a niece, Teresa Akerberg of Hico.

Burial will be at a later date in Andalusia, Ala.

Rosalie Crislip Carr

Rosalie Crislip Carr, 73, of Oak Hill, died May 26, 2009, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Born April 27, 1936, at Glendon, she was the daughter of the late Aubrey and Easter Miller Crislip. Four brothers, Oran, Cecil, Daril and Clayton Crislip; and a sister, Olive Crislip, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Carr attended the Summerlee Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Surviving: her husband, Melbourne Carr; sons, Darius Carr and wife Debra of Fayetteville, Eugene Carr and wife Cindy of Oak Hill and Bruce Carr and wife Carrie of Fayetteville; daughters, Patricia Adkins and husband Dale, and Melody Sumpter and husband William, all of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Darius Carr Jr., Bryant Carr, Elizabeth Hamilton, Jeremy Adkins Jr., Daniel Adkins, David Adkins, Amanda Brown, Michael Sumpter, Chris Parker, Danny Parker and Amber Miller; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Service was May 29, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with the Rev. Paul Allen officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Victoria Lee Reader Curtis

Victoria Lee Reader Curtis, 35, of Meadow Bridge, died May 28, 2009, at Prince, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Born May 28, 1974, at Toms River, N.J., she was the daughter of Sandra Williams Reader of Meadow Bridge and Thomas Reader of Conway, S.C.

Victoria was a college student.

Surviving, in addition to her parents: her husband, Lyle Curtis; daughters, Ashley Curtis and Amber Curtis, both of Meadow Bridge; and sisters, Michelle Beavers of Conway, S.C., and Robin Dudley of Toms River, N.J.

Mrs. Curtis was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

Mary Maxine Fordyce

Mary Maxine Fordyce, 80, of Boomer, died June 1, 2009, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

Born Feb. 17, 1929, in Sandstone, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Ellen Taylor Ward. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Murrel Fordyce Jr., and her sister, Etta Crawford.

Mrs. Fordyce was a lifelong homemaker and a Christian.

Surviving: children, Catherine Morris and her husband, Johnny, of Lansing, and Mark Fordyce and his wife, Andrea, of Charlton Heights; grandchildren, Amanda, Sarah and Emily; brother, Jack Ward of Gauley Bridge; sisters, Gloria “Coochie” Whiteside and her husband, Charles, and Peggy Stringer and her husband, Bob, all of Cleveland, Ohio, Sue Hughes of Gauley Bridge and Joyce Job of Cool Ridge; special friend, Paul Jones of Boonsborough; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 4 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Pastor Allen Donaldson officiating. Burial will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Friends may call two hours prior to service at the funeral home Thursday.

Delphia Florence Gwinn, 84, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of the Meadow Bridge area, died June 2, 2009.

Stanley Eugene Hoyle

Stanley Eugene Hoyle, 52, died May 26, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

Born July 9, 1956, at Rutherfordton, N.C., he was the son of Elizabeth Allen Hoyle of Forest City, N.C., and the late Oliver Hoyle.

Mr. Hoyle was a disabled carpenter.

Surviving: his wife, Norma Montgomery Hoyle; son, Stanley D. Hoyle of Robson, daughter, Amanda Nichole Hoyle of Robson; and stepson, Charles Allen Maynor.

Mr. Hoyle was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

David Donald Jordon

David Donald Jordon, 61, of Oak Hill, died May 31, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born March 20, 1948, at Charleston, he was the son of the late Edwin Donald and Violet Viola Thompson Jordon. His brother, William Edward Jordon; sisters, Helen Petry and Lucille Jordon; and a great-nephew also preceded him in death.

Mr. Jordon was a disabled chief engineer for WOAY TV.

David attended the Full Gospel Church at Scarbro and assisted with TV broadcast of the “Spirit of Victory” telecasts.

Surviving: his former wife who was his best friend and caregiver, Linda Williams and her husband, Leroy “Weasel,” of Clear Creek; dear friend, Dorothy Osborne and her husband, the late Elmer Osborne, whom David considered as second parents; nephews and nieces, Kerry and Linda Petry of Coto de Caza, Calif., Donna and Alan Burress of Winona, Kevin and Tracy Petry of Reading, Pa., and Eric and Erin Petry of Poca; seven great-nieces and nephews and nine great-great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be on Thursday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Dorothy Osborne officiating. Entombment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

James F. Mackey

James F. Mackey, 65, of Ashville, Ohio, died May 26, 2009, at his residence.

Born June 4, 1943, in Whipple, he was the son of the late John and Lula F. Bailey Mackey. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Mackey; sister and brother-in-law, June and Pat Allison; and brother-in-law, Bob Nixon.

Mr. Mackey retired from the U.S. Postal Service, Columbus District, after 30 years and was president of APWU.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Circleville, Ashville Kiwanis Club and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and graduate of South High School.

Surviving: his wife of 21 years, Kathleen A. Martin Mackey; children, John Mackey of Newark, Debbie Mackey of Columbus, Jessica (Brandon) Mann of Blacklick, and John James of Ashville; brother, John (Shirley) Mackey of Oak Hill; sisters, Mary (Jim) Garner of Columbus and Laura Nixon of Columbus; grandchildren, Justin, Chelsea, Lauren, Madison, Curtis; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ronald and Mary Ann Martin of Circleville; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Mass of Christian burial was held May 30 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Circleville, with Father Stephen Krile officiating. Interment followed in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Circleville.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Church Building Fund, 134 W. Mound St., Circleville, OH 43113.



Michael Eugene Martin

Michael Eugene Martin, 52, of Danese, died May 25, 2009, at his home, following a sudden illness.

Born Sept. 15, 1956, at Clifftop, he was the son of Juanita Barnette Martin of Danese and the late Virgil L. Martin.

Mr. Martin was employed by CSX Transportation for the past 34 years. He spent most of his career as a section foreman at Rainelle or Quinnimont.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving: his wife, Brenda Mae Crowe Martin of Danese; mother, Juanita Barnette Martin of Danese; daughters, Alysia Dawn Hurlocker and Kelly Alease Martin, both at home; sons, Michael Eugene Martin II (Donna Jean) of Danese, and Derrick Wayne Martin, at home; a sister, Frances Bennett and husband Robert of Danese; brothers, Clarence Martin and wife Diane of Danese, Daniel Martin and wife Brenda of Layland and Gary Martin and wife Debbie of Ansted; grandchildren, Makayla Dawn Smith, McKenzie Michelle Smith, Logan Richard Crookshanks, Colton Wayne Crookshanks and Justin Blake Martin; and several nieces and nephews.

Service was May 30 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with the Rev. Daniel Legg and the Rev. Allen Whitt officiating. He was entombed at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville.

Larry Allen Myers

Larry Allen Myers, 58, of Page, died May 24, 2009, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

At Larry’s request his body was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

Edward Allen ‘Ed’ Poff

Edward Allen “Ed” Poff, 90, of Fayetteville, died May 24, 2009, at home.

Born Feb. 14, 1919, at Boomer, he was the son of the late William Edward and Zella Ann McKinney Poff. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Estel Poff; and sisters, Edith Ammons, Rae Underwood, Violet Bartustic and Edith Bess.

Mr. Poff was a member of the Bell Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church, Dixie.

He was a mix unloader at Union Carbide, Alloy, and retired in 1972.

Surviving: his wife of 63 years, Nadine M. Poff of Fayetteville; sons, Allen R. Poff of Gauley Bridge and Joseph D. Poff of Fayetteville; sister, Nancy Jeffries of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Edward Allen Poff II, Rachelle L. Legg, Jennifer Ishman, Tony Hoot and Brenda Hoot; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were May 27 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Lee Holliday officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

James Woodrum

James Woodrum, 84, of Fayetteville, died May 27, 2009, at Fayette Nursing & Rehabitation Center.

Born Nov. 2, 1924, at Gatewood, he was the son of the late Charles Woodrum and Dora Johnson Woodrum. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Jill Woodrum, in 2001.

James was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Garten Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving: his loving wife, Easter Coleman Woodrum; sons, James “Jimmy” Woodrum at home, and Robert Woodrum and his wife, Iris, of Fayetteville; daughters, Shirley Jones and husband James of Minden and Stephanie Woodrum of Charleston; his grandchildren, Bobbie, LaRissa, Dalton, Mikayla, Cristine and Brenda; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Loretta Almond of Baltimore, Md.; and brothers, Kenneth Woodrum of Ohio and Marvin Woodrum of New Jersey.

A committal service was held May 29 at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum No. 1, with the Rev. Ronnie Persinger officiating. Entombment followed in High Lawn Memorial Park.
