Beulah Mae Britt

Beulah Mae Britt, 88, of Danese, died June 13, 2009.

Born April 2, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Jackson and Anna Cadle. Beulah also was preceded in death by her first husband, James R. Hart, and second husband, Ralph H. Britt; four brothers and two sisters.

Beulah was a homemaker who loved to work crossword puzzles and read her Bible daily. She was a registered foster parent for years and was of the Christian faith.

Surviving: her sons, James Hart and wife Carol of Danese, Warren Hart and wife Gerri of Sand Fork, and Jackson Hart of Danese; daughters, Sylvia Matheny of Price Hill, and Katie Britt of Danese; sister, Nora Heath and lifelong friend Jean Mounts; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were June 17, 2009, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Robert Barley officiating. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Theodore David Foster

Theodore David Foster, 60, of Glen Daniel, formerly of Maple Fork, died June 15, 2009, at his home of a sudden illness.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 19 at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Robbie Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Pax Community Cemetery, Pax.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Dennis Edward Goard Sr.

Dennis Edward Goard Sr., 54, of Radcliff, Ky., formerly of Harlem Heights, died June 11, 2009, at Jewish Hospital, Louisville, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Winnie Mae Goard, and brother, Samuel Batey.

Mr. Goard was retired from the United States Army after 21 years of service.

His memberships include Sign Of The Dove Church, Radcliff, Ky.; VFW Post #10281, Vine Grove, Ky.; Iron Soldiers Motorcycle Club, Radcliff, Ky.; and he had worked for Civil Service, Fort Knox, Ky.

Surviving: his loving wife, Twanda Delores Goard of Radcliff, Ky.; children, Dennis Edward Goard Jr. of Texas, Ebony LaFrances Goard of Texas, D’Ambrocio Andre Hughes Goard of Radcliff, Ky., and Tameika LaShon Goard of Radcliff, Ky.; 6 grandchildren; sister, Rosa Grooms of Oak Hill; brother, James Goard of Ohio; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were June 17 at the Sign Of The Dove Church, Radcliff, Ky., with Rev. Edward L. Palmer Sr. officiating. Burial followed in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, Radcliff, with military honors.

George B. Johnson

George B. Johnson of Kimberly died June 5, 2009.

Born July 28, 1927, in Kimberly, he was the son of the late Oliver Daniel and Bertha Brydie Johnson. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Elma Whitaker Johnson; brothers, Walter Orlando, Elvin O. Johnson, Clemon C. Johnson and Deacon James Lonnie Gillard; and an aunt, Carrie Hill.

Mr. Johnson was a member of First Baptist Church of Kimberly, where he served as assistant superintendent and treasurer and teacher of Sunday school. He was a member of New River District Usher Federation, president of Usher’s Federation, WVBSC, Hilltop, and other clubs and organizations.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired from Cheyney University as director of accounts payable and head cashier with 29 years of service.

Surviving: daughter, Georgeanna L. Johnson, and granddaughter, Gabrielle Johnson, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; sisters, Mrs. Ruth L. Wilkerson of Oak Hill, and Mrs. Bertha Jackson of Wilmington, Del.; aunt, Mrs. Lillie M. Brydie of Columbus, Ohio; sister-in-law, Mary L. Johnson of Charleston; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service was June 12 at First Baptist Church of Harlem Heights with the Rev. Keith Walker officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

William ‘Pete’ Kessler Sr.

William Joseph “Pete” Kessler Sr., 73, of Beckwith, died June 16, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following an extended illness.

Born Sept. 20, 1935, at Beckwith, he was the son of the late Essie Cleveland Blake. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth; and a nephew, Mark Adams.

Pete was of the Pentecostal faith. He was a disabled saw mill operator with Elswick’s Lumber at Dixie.

Surviving: his wife of 49 years, Judy Rebecca Holly Kessler of Beckwith; sons, William Kessler Jr. of Beckwith, Offie Kessler and companion Malisha Cox of Beckwith, and Richard Allen Kessler and fiancée Gina of Seattle, Wash.; daughters, Maggie Birt and husband Dennis of Beckwith, and Nona Ringler and husband Karl of Charleston; stepson, James Everett Holly of Florida; foster daughter, Judy Ray Skaggs of Virginia; sisters, Evelyn, Annie, Margaret, Beulah, and Virginia; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Rev. Jack Long officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral on Thursday at the funeral home.

John McKinney Jr.

John McKinney Jr., 54, of Oak Hill, died June 11, 2009, at CAMC - Memorial Division in Charleston.

Born Aug. 31, 1954, at Beckwith, he was the son of the late Dollie Smith McKinney and John McKinney Sr. His wife, Donna Jean Layton McKinney, and sisters, Brenda Newhouse and Maxine Rogers, also preceded him in death.

Mr. McKinney was of the Holiness faith and was a disabled miner and timber supplier.

Surviving: a daughter, Tammy Burgess and husband Julius of Scarbro; brother, Russell McKinney of Oak Hill; sisters, Dollie Ball and Nancy Smith, both of Oak Hill; a granddaughter, Jennifer Dawn Burgess of Scarbro; nieces, Crystal Ball, April Ball and Amanda McKinney; great-nieces, Sara Treadway and Katelyn Settle; great-nephew, Elijah Settle; and a brother-in-law, Bob Ball.

Services were June 15 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Joe Hoggard and Rev. Bryan White officiating. Burial was at McKinney Cemetery, Hopewell.

Robert Keith Settle, 47, of Fayetteville, died June 16, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Mr. Settle will be cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

Roger D. Walters

Roger D. Walters, 63, of Fayetteville, died June 9, 2009, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Roger was born Nov. 15, 1945.

He had been a resident of Sheltering Arms Nursing Home for 12 years.

Graveside rites and committal service were June 12 at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Oak Hill with Rev. William Slates officiating. Burial followed.
