Beatrice ‘Peggy’ McKinney Bays

Beatrice “Peggy” McKinney Bays, 83, of Summerlee, died Aug. 9, 2010, at the Hidden Valley Nursing Center, Oak Hill, following a short illness.

Born Oct. 12, 1926, at Burnwell, she was the daughter of the late Virgil and Goldie Eans. She also was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Shelvin W. McKinney; infant son, Shelvin Dewayne McKinney; daughter, Karen Kay McKinney McGuire of Oak Hill; and sisters, Patsy Guthrie of Elyria, Ohio, and Lillian Jones of Oak Hill.

Peggy was a homemaker, and a longtime member of the Bethel Baptist Church where she was the former piano player, Sunday school teacher and youth leader.

She belonged to various women’s circles at local churches in Oak Hill, and she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Surviving: her husband, Ray Bays of Summerlee; son, Dan McKinney and wife Diane of Oak Hill; sister, Betty Holliday and husband Guy of Mt. Hope; grandsons, Danny McKinney and wife Francesca of Beckley, Michael McGuire and wife Tandy of Edmond, Jason McGuire and wife Hannah of Marshville, N.C., Chris McKinney of Morgantown, and Cody McKinney of Oak Hill; granddaughters, Tammy McKinney and husband Craig of Scarbro, Missy Kay Herron and husband Jackie of Oak Hill, and Sherri Kidd and husband David of Oak Hill; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Summerlee with Rev. Jackie Herron and Rev. Michael McGuire officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Connie Burgess, 66, of Fayetteville, died Aug. 15, 2010, at home.

Jackie Ray Hunt

Jackie Ray Hunt, 77, of Danese, died Aug. 15, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 17, 1933, at Bluefield, he was the son of the late George Glenn and Lelia Gibson Hunt, and his late foster father, Phillip Hunt, and foster mother, Dorothy Hunt of Salem, Va. He also was preceded in death by a brother, George Glenn Hunt Jr.

Jack was a retired truck driver from Teamsters, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving: his wife, Phyllis Elaine Gibson Hunt of Danese; sons, Samuel Edward Hunt and wife Gloria, and Gary Ray Hunt and wife Sheila, all of Capon Bridge; daughters, Brenda Sue Williams of Downey, Calif., Jackie Ray Goodson of Maiden, N.C., and Sharon Lee Anderson and husband Bob of Kitzmiller, Md.; stepchildren, Sandra Eggleston of Beckley, and Timothy Simmons of Millboro, Va.; a foster brother, Richard Hunt; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Pastor Dan Holstein officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington, Va.

Alma Lee Legg

Alma Lee Legg, 70, of Castalio, Ohio, formerly of Hico, died Aug. 10, 2010, following a long illness.

Graveside service was Aug. 12 at Legg Cemetery on Sunday Road at Hico.

Pearl Neal Legg

Pearl Neal Legg, 78, of Beckwith, died Aug. 10, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born June 5, 1932, in Vaughan, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Florence Long Neal. She also was preceded in death by brothers, Ben, Jim, Henry, Buster and Bill; and sisters, Edith, Alice, and Lydia.

Mrs. Legg worked as a teller at area banks and retired from the produce department at Kroger in Beaver.

Surviving: her husband of 59 years, Harold Junior Legg of Beckwith; sons, Russell “Bo” Legg and wife Beverly, and Danny Legg and wife Debbie, all of Beckwith; daughter, Deborah Wolfe and husband Darrell of Oak Hill; brothers, Roy Neal of Fayetteville and Percy Neal of Mt. Nebo; grandchildren, Delta Adkins, Jake Legg, Tabitha Conley, Amanda Valentine, James Roy Wolfe, Ben Wolfe, and Cody Wolfe; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Aug. 13 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Danny Sears officiating. Burial followed in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Linda Lou Stover Moore

Linda Lou Stover Moore, 67, of Robson, died Aug. 16, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Graveside rites and committal service will be Friday, Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. at the Settle Cemetery, Mulberry Hollow, Robson, with LeeRoy Gray officiating. There will be no visitation.

Sharon Elaine Newhouse

Sharon Elaine Newhouse, 59, died Aug. 10, 2010, at her home in Victor, following a short illness.

Born March 5, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Curtis and Margaret Dorman.

Surviving: her husband, Carl Newhouse; son, Carl Newhouse Jr.  and his wife, Sherry, of Mount Hope; daughter, Stacey Phillips and her husband, Brian, of Stephens City, Va.; grandsons, Nick, Zack and Brayden; granddaughters, Breanna and Becca; brothers, Curtis Dorman Jr., Roger Dorman, Eddie Dorman; and a sister, Diana Hudson of Page.

Friends called Aug. 13 at the Chapel of Rest Mausoleum, Victor, prior to her burial in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Don Paul Price

Don Paul Price, 56, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., formerly of Oak Hill, died Aug. 10, 2010, in Altamonte Springs.

Born Oct. 13, 1953, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Hollas Kenneth and Thelma Mae Lockett Price. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Law, and brothers, Robert K. Price Sr. and Kenneth Dale Price.

Mr. Price was a sales associate for Office Depot.

Surviving: brothers, David Price of Nashville, N.C., and Leonard Price of Ghent; friend, David Williams of Altamont Springs, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were Aug. 15 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Willard Dempsey Sears

Willard Dempsey Sears, 89, of Hinton, died Aug. 12, 2010, following a long illness.

Born July 27, 1921, at Danese, he was the son of the late William C. and Virginia C. Sears. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Bessie Sears; daughter, Shirley Sears Berry; brothers, Basil Sears and Pascoe Sears; and sisters, Willovee Cyrus and Betty White.

A disabled employee of the West Virginia Department of Highways, he loved being outdoors and working on old cars.

He was a Baptist.

Surviving: his wife of 39 years, Georgia Mae Berry Sears; sons, Garland Sears and companion Jean of Brooks, Joe Sears of Brooks, Ronald Sears and wife Becky of Powleys Creek and Willard David Sears of Hinton; daughters, Addie Ward of Greenville and Martha Sears of Hinton; tepson, Roger Berry of Whitby; stepdaughters, Bonnie Martin of Hinton, Rita Price of Fireco and Georgia Berry of Georgia; sister, Vivian Ashley and husband Jack of Hinton; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Aug. 15 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastors Robbie Rodes and Elwood Cales officiating. Burial followed in the Sears Cemetery at Tug Creek.

Lura A. Smith

Lura A. Smith died Aug. 13, 2010.

Born March 24, 1926, at Carlisle, she was the daughter of the late Coy W. and Mary E. Akers Toney. Her husband of 67 years, Arlie A. Smith, also preceded her in death, along with her brothers, Alfred E. Toney and Earl Robert Toney Sr.

Surviving: daughters, Brenda E. Smith-Goins and her husband, Roger C. Goins, and Marilyn Kay Smith-Bigelow, all of Oak Hill area; grandchildren, Jon B. Goins and wife Belinda of Parris Island, S.C., Dawn Elaine-Goins Thomas, Jeremiah L. Goins of Oak Hill and James E. Bigelow and wife Sherry of Hilton, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Chasity, Zachary and Jacob Thomas of Oak Hill; sister, Pauline R. Crockett and her husband, Woody, of Oak Hill; and sisters-in-law, Marie Toney of Ocala, Fla., and Jane M. Toney of Oak Hill.

Funeral services were Aug. 18 at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Rev. Lum Toney officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Lena Hurt Stewart

Lena Hurt Stewart, 82, of Ellerbe, N.C., died peacefully on Aug. 14, 2010, at Moore Regional Hospital.

Born March 1, 1928, in Beckwith, she was one of seven children of the late Charles and Fonda Hurt. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Elery Glen; daughter, Glenna Carter; brothers, Charles and Harvel Hurt; and sisters, Vada Abshire, Florence Ferrell and Ernestine Hendricks.

She married Elery Glen Stewart in Prosperity, on Jan. 25, 1947. They had two children. She was a longtime resident of Eastlake, Ohio, for 35 years and employed by Victoreen Instrument for 30 years.

She enjoyed singing and playing her guitar and was a member of Ellerbe Fellowship Baptist Church.

Surviving: her loving son, David Stewart and his wife, Jan, of Charleston, and grandchildren Mark Stewart and his wife, Lisa, with whom she made her home in Ellerbe, and Jackie Holycross and her husband, David, of Alamogordo, N.M.; her sister, Edith Mullins of Menter, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Samatha Holycross and Khrista and Mavrick Stewart.

Services were Aug. 17 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Kevin Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Aurritta Corrinne Taylor, 73, of Beckley, formerly of Robson, died Aug. 15, 2010, at the home of her daughter.

Joshua Albert Toma

Joshua Albert Toma, 22, of Gatewood Road, Fayetteville, died Aug. 7, 2010, due to a tragic motorcycle accident.

Born Sept. 28, 1987, in Elkhart, Ind., he was the son of John Toma and Mary Banks Toma.

Josh was employed at Kingston Resources for the last two and half years and was a 2006 graduate of Oak Hill High School.

Most of all Josh loved spending time with family and friends. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend.

Surviving: his wife, Cynthia Houck Toma; his son, Kholton Toma at home; his mother, Mary Toma of Savannah, Tenn.; his father, John Toma of Houston, Texas; his twin sisters, Jessica and Jennica Toma of Savannah, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Wesley Everett of Oak Hill; nieces, Sidney and Sadie Toma of Savannah, Tenn.; grandparents, Beverly Toma of Knox, Ind., and Morris (Junior) Banks of Savannah, Tenn.

Funeral service was Aug. 11 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Larry Humphreys officiating. Burial was in Hollands Creek Cemetery in Savannah, Tenn.
