Berton D. Atkinson

Berton D. Atkinson, 70, of Ansted, died at home April 10, 2014, following a long illness.

Berton was born July 30, 1943, in Graydon, the son of the late George Dewey Atkinson and Almeada Willis Atkinson. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Sim Atkinson.

He enjoyed playing the guitar and banjo, listening to bluegrass music and gardening.

He was loved by all who knew him and will be sadly missed forever.

He was a retired truck driver from Huffman Trucking Co. and a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church of Victor.

Surviving: his wife, Violet Atkinson; a son, William E. Atkinson of Ansted, a daughter, Mindy Taylor and Chris McQuerry, both of Mount Lookout; sisters, Patsy Atkinson, Mary and Mike Niday and June and Curt Lesher, all of Ansted; grandaughters, Ashleigh Atkinson of Crab Orchard, Bella, Christy and Ava of Mount Lookout and Marissa Lilly of Oak Hill; grandson, Jesse McQuerry of Mount Lookout, and another grandson expected on June 1; eight nephews and nine nieces and a special nephew, James Halstead; and dear friends, Dink and Jesse Davis.

Funeral services were April 13 at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Joe Smith officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor.

Gladys Marie Norton Cottle

Gladys Marie Norton Cottle, 75, of Harvey, died April 13, 2014, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital after a long illness.

Born Oct. 11, 1938, at Elizabeth, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Michael and Mary Fullerton Norton. Mrs. Cottle also was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Harvey Cottle Jr.; two brothers and three sisters.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving: her husband, Kenneth Harvey Cottle; children, Ellen Aguirre and husband Ted of Houston, Texas, Michael A. Cottle Sr. and wife Hattie, Mary Abshire and husband David, and Donna Conelly and husband Charlie, all of Mount Hope, James Cottle and wife Tiffany of Sun Mine Road, and Margaret “Maggie” Voiers of Harvey; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and brothers, William Norton and wife Marge of New Jersey, Timothy Norton and wife Willa of North Carolina, Danny Norton and Ronnie Norton, both of Oregon.

Funeral services were April 15 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Pastor Jessie Parker officiating. Burial followed at Hilltop Cemetery.
