Lola Esther Propps Zickafoose Bays

Lola Esther Propps Zickafoose Bays died June 21, 2010.

Born Aug. 1, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Neveve Propps. She also was preceded in death by her siblings, Nina Ziegler, Josephine (Jo) Propps, Ernest Propps , Lorena (Belle) Dorn and Lester Propps; her first husband of 37 years and father of her children, Perry B. Zickafoose; and her second husband of 13 years, John Bays.

Lola was born at home on Propps Ridge near Lookout, a seven-month baby, one of a set of twin girls. She was so blessed with good health that she had only been in the hospital three times in her life, twice for the birth of her daughters and once following cataract surgery.

Lola taught school in Fayette County for 34 years at Clifty and Divide Grade schools. She continued to pursue her master’s degree plus 45 hours, often driving many miles for night classes after teaching a full day.

While living in Lookout, she was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Eastern Star, and the Lookout Garden Club. She was a leader of Civil Air Patrol in the 1950s.

After the death of her first husband, she moved to Ansted in 1979 and lived there until 1986 when she married John Bays, a Nuttall High School classmate, and moved to Casper, Wyo. In Casper, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the Gideon Auxiliary, and was honored for the many hours that she volunteered as a hospital pink lady.

In 1998, Lola moved to Sneads Ferry, N.C., where her daughter Lynn lived at the time. In 2004, she moved to Hurricane, first living at Broadmore Assisted Living, and at the time of her death was living at Regency Place in Scott Depot.

Surviving: sisters, Lois Cumberledge, her twin sister, of San Diego, Calif., and Gayle Martinez of Chesapeake, Va.; her daughters, Ann Skaggs and husband Paige of Ansted, and Lynn Hendrick and husband Steve of Hurricane; grandchildren, Robin Looney of Southpoint, Ohio, and Dr. Chris Skaggs and Stephanie Burgess, both of Hurricane; and great-grandchildren, Paige and Garrett Looney, Gabrielle and Morgan Skaggs, and Braeden, Ryen and Greysen Burgess.

A celebration of Lola’s life was held June 25 at The Chapel of Rest Mausoleum at Victor, conducted by Pastor Roy Williams. Lola was laid to rest at Restlawn Memory Gardens in a plot beside her first husband, Perry B. Zickafoose, in the row where her parents and sister, Jo, are buried.

Tom Chambers

Tom Chambers, 87, of Oak Hill, died June 26, 2010, in the Beckley VA Medical Center.

Born Aug. 21, 1922, in Daniels, he was the son of the late Charles and Lelia Burdette Chambers. He also was preceded in death by wife, Doris Lee Aliff Chambers; daughter, Deborah Chambers; and grandson, Michael Dodd.

Mr. Chambers proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II during which he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a 50-year-plus member of the LaFayette American Legion Post 149, Fayetteville.

He continued to serve the country he loved as an honor guard team member with the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 where he participated in hundreds of funerals with military rites for former and active military soldiers.

He was a retired furnace tapper with Elkem Metals, Alloy.

Mr. Chambers was an avid fan of all sports, especially WVU and the Cincinnati Reds.

Surviving: his daughters, Terri Dodd and husband Reggie, and Tammi Chambers; and grandsons, Greg Dodd and wife Jackie, and Scott Chambers, all of Oak Hill.

Funeral services were June 30 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville. Burial followed at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with military rites by American Legion Post 149, Fayetteville.

Sarah Lee ‘Sally’ Drake

Sarah Lee “Sally” Drake, 76, of Oak Hill, died June 28, 2010, at the home of her caregiver in Fayetteville.

Oscar Thurman ‘O.T.” Fitzwater

Oscar Thurman “O.T.” Fitzwater, 75, died June 27, 2010, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness.

Born Jan. 18, 1935, in Herndon, he was the son of the late James W. and Goldie McKinney Fitzwater. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Rose Dent Fitzwater, on Oct. 27, 2009; and brothers, Jonnie and Ray Fitzwater.

Mr. Fitzwater was a 43-year member of Fayetteville First Church of God. He was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA.

Surviving: his children, William Ray “Bill” Fitzwater and wife Dorinda Joyce of Oak Hill, Debra Kaye Frye and husband Raymond Lewis of Fayetteville, and John Franklin Fitzwater and wife Lori Lynn of Oak Hill; grandchildren, William Ray Fitzwater Jr. and wife Stacey, Christopher Michael Fitzwater and wife Christina, Jessica Elaine Fitzwater, Amber Dawn Frye, Ashley Michele Fitzwater, Britney Nocole Fitzwater, and Cassidy Dawn Fitzwater; great-grandchildren, Madison Rayne Fitzwater and Dakota Lee Fitzwater; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 1, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Russell Hayes and Layman Michael Parsons officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral on Thursday.

Tina Marie Jarrell Gadomski

Tina Marie Jarrell Gadomski, 42, of Oak Hill, died June 27, 2010, at her home.

Born June 14, 1968, at Ft. Bragg, N.C., she was a daughter of James Jarrell and the late Shirley Brown Jarrell.

Tina was a monitor technician at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, and was a member of Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving, in addition to her father: her husband, Charles Edward “Eddie” Gadomski; daughters, Tiffney Johnson and Cassandra Lilly, both of Beckley, and Hannah Gadomski, at home; grandchildren, Kyra Johnson, Asa Johnson, and Micah Johnson, all of Beckley; brother, James K. Jarrell Jr. of Fairdale; and sister, Susan Davis of Mabscott.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 1, at Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Jack L. Hill

Jack L. Hill, 78, of Oak Hill, died June 26, 2010, at his residence.

Born March 6, 1932, in Carlisle, he was the son of the late Gervil Lee and Don Mildred Bennett Hill. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Yvonne Lee Hill Abraham, and grandson, Eric Keith Campbell.

Mr. Hill was a retired produce manager from the A&P Tea Company, Oak Hill, and also retired from Nell Jean, Beckley.

He attended Calvary Baptist Church, Oak Hill, and was a member of Oak Hill Lodge #120 AF & AM.

Surviving: wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Ammar Hill of Oak Hill; daughters, Deborah Awny and husband Joe of Tulsa, Okla., and Donna Campbell and husband Keith of Hilltop; grandchildren, Charles Abraham, Zachary Awny, Makayla Campbell Snyder, and Ryan Campbell; and one great-grandchild, Alexander Snyder.

Services were June 29 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Houston Booth officiating. Burial was in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Kenna Lea Keith Hurley

Kenna Lea Keith Hurley, 51, of Oak Hill, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on June 23, 2010, after battling a long illness.

Born Dec. 18, 1958, at Kincaid, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth L. and Freda M. Blake Hurley.

The owner of Hair by Kenna, she was a talented hairdresser in the Oak Hill area whose customers were also friends. She was a joke teller, storyteller, a great listener and friend.

Kenna was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving: son, Eric T. Keith; sisters, Alanda Kay Hurtado and Kathy Villarreal; nieces, Shannon K. Miller and Kelly D. Taylor; several great-nieces and nephews and loving friends, Karen Bolen, Jackie Dean and JoAnn Bragg.

Graveside rites and committal services, followed by burial, were June 29 at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110.

A small reception was held following the service on Tuesday at Kenna’s home.

Carol G. Treadway Miller

Carol G. Treadway Miller, 75, of Oak Hill, died June 26, 2010, at Hidden Valley Health Care Center, Oak Hill.

Born March 25, 1935, in Maplewood, she was a daughter of the late Dotridge and Pearl McClung. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Keadle.

Mrs. Miller was a medical secretary and was employed by Fayette Clinic, Oak Hill Hospital, Dr. Joe N. Jarrett’s office and also worked at Oak Hill High School. She also formerly operated “Caring Hands” in Oak Hill.

She was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church, Fitzgerald-Donnelly Circle of the Church and the American Baptist Women.

Mrs. Miller was a graduate of Nuttall High School.

Surviving: her loving husband of 55 years, Sam Miller of Oak Hill; daughter, Cheryl (Chuck) Vance of South Charleston; sons, Kevin Miller of Oak Hill and David (Tina) Miller of Jefferson Hills, Pa.; grandchildren, Christian Vance, Jennifer and Chase Miller, and Briana and Alex Miller; brothers, Paul Treadway of Dundalk, Md., and Louis Treadway of Woodburn, Ind.; sisters, Mary Lipscomb of Charlotte, N.C., and Ann Wolfe of Lady Lake, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were June 29 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel in Oak Hill with the Revs. David Sneed and Steve Malanowski officiating. Burial was in High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Alma Lea Newhouse

Alma Lea Newhouse, 74, of Oak Hill, died June 25, 2010.

Born Sept. 21, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Sam Mazer and Irene Yarber Mazer. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Sam Mazer and John Mazer, and a grandson, Ronnie Keith Tincher.

Alma was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was a homemaker for her six children, and also spent several years as a Certified Nurse Assistant.

Alma was loved by all who met her. She was a fun, caring, and a giving person.

Surviving: her children, Donna Newhouse, Joe Newhouse, Robert Newhouse, Jane Newhouse, Jean Webb, and Mary Lee Williamson; sister, Velda Smith; brothers, Donald Mazer and Barnie Mazer; grandchildren, Misty Barnett, Tabitha Adkins, Brandon Newhouse, Ashley Wiseman, Dalton Newhouse, Jonas Webb, Robert Webb, Patricia Newhouse, Jeremy McKinney, Samantha Nicholson, George Williamson, and Walter Williamson; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was June 29 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Morris Nutter officiating. Burial followed in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.

Vivian Ruth Spears Turner, 75, of Pax, died June 22, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Feb. 9, 1935, at Tomahawk, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Francis Marion and Oma Hall Spears. Her husband, Charles Edward Turner, and a daughter, Mary Jo Turner, also preceded her in death.

Vivian, a longtime resident of Pax, was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was a lifetime member of the Willis Branch Community Church.

Surviving: daughter, Loretta Williams and husband Thurmond of Pax; sons, Jack Randall Turner and wife Susan of Pax, Wayne Marvin Turner and wife Bridgette of Surveyor, Timothy Lane Turner and wife Laura of Robson and Ira Toney Turner and wife Gail of Pax; brother, James Spears and wife Betty of Tomahawk, Ky.; sisters, Maxine Blair of Ashland, Ky., and Phyllis Mollett and husband Claude of Tomahawk; grandchildren, David Williams, Sherman Williams, Jeff Williams, Nick Brackett, Amanda Turner, Andrew Gray, Joshua Newsom, Kristina Adkins, Lisa Stover, Danny Stover, Monica Lilly, Erica Lilly and Katie Light; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Clara M. Arbogast Willis, 70, of Oak Hill, died June 24, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born April 21, 1940, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Ora Burton Arbogast. Her husband, Emory Willis; brothers, Donald Arbogast, Jack Arbogast Jr., infant Darrell Arbogast and Dr. James Arbogast; and sisters, Yvonne Bays Turk and Pauline Davis, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Willis was a member of the Mountain View Church of God, Hilltop, and a homemaker.

Surviving: son, Dean Eugene Gamble Sr. of Oak Hill; sister, JoAnn Tilley of Princeton; brothers, William Arbogast of Asheville, N.C., Lewis Arbogast of El Paso, Texas, and Jack “J.W.” Arbogast of Oak Hill; special friends, Dorothy Blankenship and James McClure; grandsons, Dean Gamble Jr. and Christopher Gamble of Oak Hill; stepgrandson, Alex Beigel of Mt.
