Mary Jane Avis

Mary Jane Avis, 72, of McRoss, died July 23, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a short illness.

Born Dec. 7, 1939, at Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Jess Willard and Bertie Helen Bennett Redden. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Lynn Avis Scott; a son, Roger William Avis Redden; a grandson, Brandon Omar Scott; and a brother, Jess Redden.

She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mary was a doll maker, seamstress, and homemaker.

Surviving: her lifelong friend and companion, Forrest “Shanny” Brown of McRoss; daughters, Sue Ann Fox of McRoss, and Mary Herndon and husband Bill of Charmco; sisters, Phyllis Cox and Thelma Mullins, both of Meadow Bridge, and Shirley Felver and Judy Jennings, both of Iowa; brothers, Lamon Redden of Meadow Bridge, and Richard Redden of Indiana; grandchildren, Christopher Avis, Roger Herndon, Tiffany Adkins, Celia Vandall, Donald Adkins, Eugene Vandall, Dustin Fox, Katernia Scott, Justin Scott, Brand Scott and Kortney Scott; and great-grandchildren, Alicia, Christian, Bransen, Logan, Codie, Maddie, McCale, Brandon, Sierria, Nervonna, Sadie, and Landon.

Services were July 28 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Bennie Kenney officiating. Burial followed in the Claypool Community Cemetery, Claypool.

Michael Shannon Bennett Sr.

Michael Shannon Bennett Sr., 59, of Mt. Nebo, died July 28, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea following a short illness.

Born Sept. 8, 1952, in Richwood, he was a son of the late Charles Burton and Olivene Marion Bennett. He also was preceded in death by a brother, David (Pickett) Bennett.

Michael previously worked as a loader operator at an asphalt plant and as a coal miner.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving: his wife, Terri Groves Bennett of Mt. Nebo; daughters, Karen Kincaid of Midway, and Tonia Allen of China Grove, N.C.; sons, Michael Shannon Bennett Jr. of Salisbury, N.C., and Jeremy Curtis Bennett of Ansted; a sister, Pamela Jean Smith of Victor; brothers, Keith Bennett and wife Cindy of Hico, and Floyd Bennett and wife Barbara, Doug Bennett and wife Pat, and Billy Bennett, all of Victor; and 10 grandchildren.

Services were July 31 at the Buckhorn United Methodist Church with Pastor Rodney Nutter officiating. Burial followed in the Groves Cemetery.

Jo Ann Blake

Jo Ann Blake, 65, of Meadow Bridge, died July 25, 2012.

A graveside service was held July 29 at the Layland Cemetery in Layland.

James Lee Bragg

James Lee Bragg, 47, of Danese, died July 25, 2012, following a motorcycle accident.

Born Oct. 16, 1964, in Toledo, Ohio, he was a son of Robert Howard Bragg II and the late Mona Gayle Maynard. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Bragg.

He was raised by his grandmother, Mildred Bragg Harmon, and stepmother, Sharon Glassburn.

James was a restaurant manager for Bob Evans and had worked at Shoney’s for many years.

He was a member of the Rainelle Moose Lodge and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving: his father, Robert Howard Bragg II; grandmother, Mildred Bragg Harmon; daughters, Shawna Poole of South Carolina, Jessica Bragg of Florida, and Amber Lane, Ashley Lane, and Jamie Bragg, all of Georgia; sons, James Robert Bragg of Charleston, and James Lee Bragg Jr. of Georgia; sisters, Susie Forbes of Meadow Bridge, Maggie Harrison of Middleburg, Fla., and Shari Kincaid of Scott Depot; brother, Bryan Bragg of Cross Lanes; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was July 28 at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel in Rainelle.

Frances Prather Elder

Frances Prather Elder, 85, of Maple Fork Road, Mount Hope, died July 24, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Aug. 22, 1926, at Sun, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Stella Marie Warwick Prather. Her husband, Fred Thomas Elder, also preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving: daughter, Drema Kay Smith of Maple Fork; sons, Bud Elder, and Wayne Elder and wife Debra, all of Harvey, and James T. Elder and wife Holly of Clear Creek; sister, Sue Westerman of Fort Myers, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren

Funeral services were July 26 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Pastor Danny Dameron officiating. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Kevin Wayne Ellevan

Kevin Wayne Ellevan, 36, of Ansted, died July 26, 2012, at CAMC-General Division, Charleston.

Born April 18, 1976, at Montgomery, he was the son of Barbara Gale Bowyer Skaggs of Fayetteville, and the late John Wayne Ellevan. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Grover Gaylen Bowyer and John Maurice Ellevan.

Kevin was a member of Lovers Leap Baptist Church, Ansted.

He graduated from Mountaineer Challenge Academy in Kingwood, and he enjoyed riding motorcycles and 4-wheelers.

Surviving: his mother, Barbara Ellevan Skaggs of Fayetteville; son, Brian Koch of Beckwith; daughter, Cori Ellevan of Fayetteville; brothers, Roger Bowyer of Fayetteville, and John Carl Ellevan of Hillsboro; grandmother, Lillian Bowyer of Ansted; uncle, James Bowyer of Ansted; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services were July 30, at Lovers Leap Baptist Church, Ansted, with Pastor Ron George Sr. and Pastor James Ellison officiating. Burial followed at the Hendricks Cemetery.

Harley Clay Gwinn Sr.

Harley Clay Gwinn Sr., 80, of Lockbridge, died July 23, 2012, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, following a long illness.

Born Sept. 9, 1931, at Lockbridge, he was the son of the late Lemuel and Anna Stickler Gwinn. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Sadie Moody Gwinn; a daughter, Trina Johnson; a son-in-law, John Thick; a granddaughter, Sarah Gwinn Martin; brothers, Bobby, Dempsey and James Gwinn; and a sister, Juanita Schoff.

Mr. Gwinn served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and attended the Thorny Point Tabernacle on Hump Mountain.

He retired from General Motors in Flint, Mich., in 1985 after 28 years. He was a member of Local 581.

Surviving: sons, Harley C. Gwinn Jr., and Bruce Gwinn and wife Delores, all of Flint, Mich., and James Gwinn and wife Stephanie of Whitesville, N.C.; daughters, Gale Thick of Flint, Mich., Doreen Ex and husband Richard of Durand, Mich., and Rita Chinevere and husband Roger of Burton, Mich.; sisters, Mildred Wickline of Lockbridge and Nelma Fitzwater of Viola, Del.; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services were July 28 at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jimmy Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial followed in the Dequasie Cemetery at Lockbridge.

Johnny C. Ingram Jr.

Johnny C. Ingram Jr. of Turkey Creek died July 21, 2012, in Natchez, Miss., due to diabetes complications and cardiac arrest.

Born June 14, 1961, in Morehead City, N.C., he was the son of the late Johnny C. Ingram Sr. and Mary Josephine Ingram. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Lisa Berry.

Mr. Ingram worked various construction jobs and was a truck driver for Crosier’s Sanitation.

He loved to fish and considered himself to be wholeheartedly a Mountaineer.

Surviving: his sister, Brenda Cantu and husband Robert of Natchez, Miss.; brother-in-law, Tom Berry of Fayetteville; nephews, Lucas Berry, Chase Berry and James Foster; niece, Staci Whitney; and three great-nieces.

Arrangements are pending at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.



Vicky Ann Yearego Jones

Vicky Ann Yearego Jones, 55, of Goodview, Va., formerly of Rainelle, died July 26, 2012.

Services were July 30 in the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum at Clintonville.

William T. Legg

William T. Legg, 82, of Ansted, died July 29, 2012, at Charleston Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Born July 23, 1930, at Victor, he was the son of the late Lesley “Lec” and Anna Crouse Legg. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Junior Legg.

Mr. Legg was a retired coal miner, last working for Perry and Hylton Coal Company.

He was a member of the Boomer Church of Christ, at Boomer.

Surviving: his wife of 50 years, Hilda Jane Willis Legg of Ansted; daughter, Vicki Woodrum of Ansted; son, Tommy Benson and wife Judy of Ansted; grandchildren, Bobby and wife Lynn, Sherri and husband Johnny, Jennifer and husband Steve, and Corey and wife Amanda; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Ericka, Damain, Jordan, Jacob and Kaden.

Services were Aug. 1 at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted. Burial followed at the Liberty Cemetery.

John Raymond Rice

John Raymond Rice, 71, of Fayetteville, died July 24, 2012, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Feb. 4, 1941, at Odd, he was the son of the late Bert and Vida Lusk Rice. Three brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death.

He was a disabled coal miner.

Surviving: his wife, Mary Charlene Thompson Rice; son, Raymond Rice and wife Tammy of Clayton, N.C.; daughters, Alma Treadway and husband Lee of Fayetteville, Tina Howington and husband James of Oak Hill, and Becky Lewis and husband Denny of Fayetteville; grandchildren who were raised by their grandparents, Brittany Rice and Mary Songer; grandchildren, Josh, Jay, John, Kimberly and Brandon; and seven great grandchildren.

In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Rice was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

Eula Lee McCallister Rumsey, 67, of Oak Hill, died July 22, 2012.

Dreama J. Blevins Stewart

Dreama J. Blevins Stewart, 68, of Prosperity, died July 25, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Oct. 9, 1943, at Wriston, she was the daughter of the late Carl David and Gladys Alerene Light Blevins.

Mrs. Stewart retired from the U.S. government with 30 years of service, more than 20 of which were with the Social Security Administration.

She was a 1962 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill.

Dreama was a lifelong member of the Wriston First Church of God.

A member of the Raleigh-Fayette Genealogy Society, she had received the West Virginia History Hero award from the state legislature.

She loved going to the Smokey Mountains and Dollywood.

Surviving: her husband, Carl J. Stewart; stepson, Gregory Dale Stewart of Prosperity; stepdaughters, Donna K. Tippitts of Unionville, Ind., and Zettie Lynn Boyd of Prosperity;e sister, Donna Hall of Hilltop; a special aunt, Nilah Burford; nieces and nephews, Kathy Vaught, Karen Underwood and Jason Hall; and great-nieces and nephews, Ashley Vaught, Jessica Vaught, Jordan Vaught, Cameron Underwood, Natalie Underwood, Maxwell Underwood and Jaycee Hall.

Funeral services were July 28 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Chester Easterling officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Daniel Wood

Daniel Wood, 78, of Meadow Bridge, died peacefully July 28, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family and friends following his courageous 3 1/2 year-battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 11, 1933, at McCreery, he was the son of the late Charles R. Wood Sr. and Mary Josephine Roache Wood. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Harry, Kenneth, Charles, James, and Thomas; his sisters, Marguerite Owenby, Lillian Hicks, and Carrie Morris; a son-in-law, Ronald Harris; and an infant grandchild, Christian Hanshew.

Daniel graduated from Mount Hope High School (Class of 1951) where he also played football. He also attended WV Tech where he and his brother, Russell Wood, played football together.

Daniel was of the Baptist faith.

He was a retired employee of CSX Railroad and a member of the UTU Local 118.

He served for 4 years in the United States Navy where he served on the USS Rich with his brother, Charles.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge.

He loved gardening, attending and watching WVU sports, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Daniel was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a great friend to all who knew him. He had a passion for sports and was an avid fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers. He certainly lived and enjoyed life to the fullest.

Surviving: his loving wife of 44 years, Barbara Ewing Wood; daughters, Deborah Harris of Meadow Bridge and Kimberly Crump and husband Todd of Starkville, Miss.; brother, Russell Wood of Point Pleasant; grandchildren, Danielle Hanshew and husband Josh, and Bryanna Burdette and husband Chad, all of Meadow Bridge, and Abigayle Crump of Starkville, Miss.; great-grandchild, Keira Hanshew of Meadow Bridge; and a host of several special nieces, nephews, and friends.

A celebration of Daniel’s life was conducted Aug. 1 at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with Rev. Glen Tallent officiating. Interment followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity with military graveside rites conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110.

Donations may be made in Daniel’s memory at the Hospice of Southern West Virginia.

Jerry R. Woodrum

Jerry R. Woodrum, 60, of Ansted, died at his home on July 17, 2012.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Alma Woodrum; brothers, John Woodrum and Jimmy Arbaugh; and a sister, Joann Stull.

Jerry was a 1970 graduate of Ansted High School and also served as the Student Council president his senior year.

He worked for the Kroger Company as an auditor for 20 years.

In his free time, he loved working on his yard and landscaping. He also loved collecting cars, with one of his favorites being his 1975 Trans Am, “The Bandit.”

Surviving: his wife of 34 years, Vicki, of Ansted; son, Corey and his loving companion, Amanda, of Charleston; brother, Jeff of North Carolina; and many friends and other family members.

There will be no services or visitation. At his request, his remains will be cremated.
