Richard Clark Adkins

Richard Clark Adkins, 66, of Scarbro, died June 11, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born Feb. 18, 1947, at Eccles, he the son of the late Clark Adkins and Lura (Adkins) Adkins. He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Freda Cook, Joyce Breeden, and Lorene Marcenach; and brothers, Estel Adkins, Herbert Adkins and Charles Adkins.

Richard was a mechanic on heavy equipment.

Surviving: his loving wife of 47 years, Vivian Adkins; daughters, Sherry Crawford and husband “Bubby,” Donna Sayre and husband Ronnie, and Bonnie Adkins; son, Ricky Adkins and wife Mary Jean; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was June 15 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Rev. Ken Sowder, Joan Perry, and Bobby Adkins officiating.

Burial followed in the Adkins Family Cemetery, Longbottom Mountain, Hinton.

Rowena Rae Conner

Rowena Rae Conner, 64, of LaGrange, Ga., died June 9, 2013.

Dorothy ‘Dot’ B. Jeter

Dorothy “Dot” B. Jeter, 88, formerly of Mt. Hope, died June 10, 2013, at The Wyngate Senior Living Community in Barboursville.

Born July 3, 1924, in Keystone, she was the daughter of the late Virginia and R. Gale Kirby. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Robert R. Jeter of Mt. Hope; daughter-in-law, Nancy Jeter; sister, Virginia Edwards; and brothers, Roland and Frank Kirby.

She resided most of her life in Mt. Hope before moving to Barboursville in 2007.

Dot was a graduate of Mt. Hope High School and University of Charleston where she earned a degree in elementary education.

She taught many years in the Fayette County school system and was a long time member of the Mt. Hope Baptist Temple.

Surviving: her children, Robert “Rusty” (Mary) Jeter of Proctorville, Ohio, Barry (Kriss) Jeter of Finleyville, Pa., Jane (Mark) Bailey of Huntington, Julie (Frank) Jeter of Mt. Hope, and Jon (Amy) Jeter of Finley, Ohio; grandchildren, Robert Michael (Amy) Jeter of Las Vegas, Nev., Marla (Tyler) Haslam of Huntington,  Matthew Bailey of Huntington, Sarajane (Brett) Agypt of Sterling, Va., Kati (Will) Holland of Huntington,  Tristan Jeter of Mt. Hope, Anna Grace (Jay) Copley of Huntington, Ind., and Andrew (Kara) Jeter of Toledo, Ohio; great-grandsons, Jonathan Jeter and Miles Agypt; sister, Jane (Robert) Myers of Midland, Texas; sisters-in-law, Nellie Kirby of Huntington, and Anna Marie Bottoms of Norfolk, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were June 14 at Tyree Funeral Home, Mt. Hope. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Shirley Ann Waldron Mackey

Shirley Ann Waldron Mackey, 84, of Oak Hill, died June 15, 2013.

Shirley was born June 30, 1928, at Minden, daughter of the late Jess E. and Ida Berry Waldron. She also was preceded in death by an infant son, John Thomas Mackey Jr., and by a brother, Alvin C. Waldron.

Shirley graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1947 and worked for many years at Oak Hill Theater.

She was a homemaker and member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, Rebecca Bible Class, Altar Guild and 3 F’s Prayer Group.

She also served on the board of directors of the CHS/OHHS Alumni Association, Senior Friends and Senior Circle.

Surviving: her husband of 62 years, John “Pro” Mackey; her son, Joe Mackey of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and sisters, Betty Clendenin of Oak Hill, Jean Bowling of Carolina Shores, N.C., and Ramona Taylor of Nevada City, Calif.

Funeral services were June 18 at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles D. Miller and Rev. Bill Slates officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Frances M. Martin

Frances M. Martin of Corliss died June 12, 2013, at her home.

Born Aug. 4, 1925, at Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Grace McClelland Hiser. She also was preceded in death by her husband, C. Brooks Martin, in 2003; a son, George Franklin Martin; a sister, Cammie Sevy; and a brother, Herbert L. Hiser.

Frances was a member of Russellville Baptist Church of Russellville and had worked as a beautician for many years.

Surviving: her daughter, Cammie Simms and husband Dennis of Hilton Village; a son, Herbert B. Martin of Hilton Village; grandsons, Jeremy Simms and wife Andrea, and Anthony Simms; great-grandchildren, Sophie and Henry Simms; several nieces and nephews and other extended family; and her caregivers, Marsha Adams, Janette Brown, Ann Smith, Mary Sue Lane, and Sue Aldridge.

Service was June 15 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Ted Champe officiating. Burial followed in the Bethel Cemetery at Corliss.

Mary Belle Selvey Ellsmore Shumaker

Mary Belle Selvey Ellsmore Shumaker, 86, of Fayetteville, died June 12, 2013, at Fayette Nursing & Rehab Center, Fayetteville, following an extended illness.

Born March 1, 1927, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Perry H. and Lida A. Amick Selvey. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Ellsmore; second husband, George Shumaker; and sisters, Betty Potter, Kathleen Hesse, and Sarah Lee Cottle.

Mary Belle was a retired administrator for C&O Railroad Credit Union in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving: her nephew, William Hesse Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Bluefield; niece, Janet Hesse of Arizona; longtime friend and caregiver, Frances Sizemore and her husband, Terry, of Fayetteville, Wanda Ball of Oak Hill and Doris Goins of Oak Hill.

Graveside services were June 14 at Huse Memorial Park in Fayetteville, with Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn officiating.

Clarice Louise Sodder

Clarice Louise Sodder, 80, of Fayetteville, died June 15, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

Born Oct. 22, 1932, at Smithers, she was the daughter of the late Norman R. and Ethel S. Buckland. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Sodder; brothers, Marshall Buckland and Clifford Buckland; sister, Ruby Ford; son, Joey Sodder Jr.; grandson, Gary Wayne Gillespie Jr.; and granddaughter, Angela Abbott.

Surviving: her children, George Sodder, Vicki Gillespie, and Sherry Thornburg; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Nellie, Donna, Lois, and Nora; brothers, Alfred, Jimmy, and Jeff; and a host of other family and friends.

In accordance with her wishes, she will be cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date.

Leonard D. Stone

Leonard D. Stone, 92, of Gallatin, Tenn., died June 12, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Stone; and sisters, Ruth Lindamood and Reba Vick.

Leonard served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of First Apostolic Church in Nashville.

Surviving: his wife, Betty Stone; daughters, Sharon L. Napier and Lynn Beth Stone; grandchildren, John S. VanMeter and Jill Napier; siblings, Joe and Jack Stone, Betty Gill and Nellie Treadway; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held June 15 at Forest Lawn Chapel with Rev. Billy Shoulders and his nephew, J. Dan Gill, officiating.

Entombment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Douglas MacArthur ‘Mack’ Thomas Jr.

Douglas MacArthur “Mack” Thomas Jr., 48, of Oak Hill, died June 10, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following an apparent heart attack.

Born March 29, 1965, at Oak Hill, he was the son of Douglas MacArthur and Ruth Martin Thomas of Minden. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Toy and Kathern Martin, and his paternal grandparents, Earl and Virginia Thomas.

He was a salesman with Cole Truck Parts and was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving: his wife, Christy Evans Thomas of Oak Hill; sons, Matthew D. and Christopher M. Thomas, both of Oak Hill; and a brother, James Lee Thomas and wife Chrissy of Oak Hill.

Funeral services were June 14 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Paul Basham officiating. Burial followed at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Nancy Faye Thomas

Nancy Faye Thomas, 61, of Oak Hill, died June 13, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born Nov. 17, 1951, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of William Ernest Rhodes and the late Marcelline Maxine Mullins Rhodes. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pamela Rhodes.

Nancy attended the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving: her husband, James Edward “Roscoe” Thomas III; daughter, Shannon Dixon and husband, Jason, of Oak Hill; son, James “Hard Rock” Thomas and wife Stacy of Oak Hill; sisters, Barbara Bell and husband Teddy of Oak Hill, and Peggy Davis of Beckley; and eight grandchildren, Mackenzie, Alexis, Brianna, Abbie, Katelynn, Brenna, Logan, and Skyler.

Funeral service was June 16 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Rev. Virgil Herron officiating. Entombment followed in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Keith Andrew Williams

Keith Andrew Williams, 52, of Mount Hope, died June 18, 2013, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Born Jan. 6, 1961, at Bridgeton, N.J., he was the son of the late Andrew Tildon and Judith Humphrey Williams.

Keith was a self-employed carpenter. He attended the Packs Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving: brothers, James Williams and wife Tina of Pax and Roger Williams of North Carolina.

Mr. Williams was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

Freda B. Young

Freda B. Young (affectionately known as “Granny”), 102, formerly of Russellville and currently residing in Charleston, died June 12, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

Born March 4, 1911, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Owen “Shorty” Young; three sisters and two brothers.

Granny was an inspiration to all who met her. She was a woman of great faith who enjoyed reading her Bible daily. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her. She is rejoicing in her heavenly home where she was so graciously received by her loving Father.

Surviving: her daughters, Sarah Christenson of Charleston and Margaret Ann Blankenship of Orlando, Fla.; her son, Jim Young (Ellen) of Charleston; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.

Service was June 15th, with Rev. Mike Loudermilk officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
