Lonnie Frank Cooper

Lonnie Frank Cooper, 58, of Victor, died July 18, 2010, following a short illness.

Glen Atlee Gore

Mr. Glen Atlee Gore, 83, of 258 Collins Hill Road, Glen Jean, died July 14, 2010, at his home after a short illness.

Born April 13, 1927, in Pence Springs, he was the son of the late Frederick Douglas Gore and Cordelia Jefferson Gore. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Jones Gore; daughter, Rachel L. Gore; grandsons, Timothy Mosley and Dwayne A. Gore; brothers, Charles Gore and Lawrence Gore; and sisters, Mary Buford, Helen Mosby, Eula Hash and Dorothy Brown.

Mr. Gore worked as a supervisor of night cleaners at The Greenbrier hotel and was a member of First Baptist Church Glen Jean.

Surviving: his sons, Glen L. (LaTanya) Gore of District Heights, Md., and Fred (Annette) Gore of Clinton, Md.; daughters, Claretta (Julius) Brown of Washington, D.C., Janette (John) Cunningham of Suitland, Md., Connie (John) Barclay of Clarksville, Tenn., Diane (Richard) Stevens of Hilltop, and Regina Gore of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Juanita Hendricks of Bluefield, and Audrey Totten of Beckley; brother-in-law, Laska Jones of Redlands, Calif.; 26 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; cousins and friends.

Funeral services were July 20 at First Baptist Church of Glen Jean, Collins Hill Road, Glen Jean, with Rev. Earl Jackson and Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Dennis Bays Holcomb

Dennis Bays Holcomb, 74, of Lookout, died July 14, 2010. His final days were spent surrounded by family, and he peacefully left this earth at home in his sleep.

Born May 8, 1936, he was the son of the late Mary Frances and Stanley Dennis Holcomb. He also was preceded in death by a brother, James Lee.

He graduated Nuttall High School in 1954 and served in the Air Force. He loved nature, coin collecting, bluegrass music and conservative political topics.

Mr. Holcomb moved to Texas in 1980, but was forever loyal to his home state of West Virginia, where he was laid to rest in Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Nallen on July 20.

Surviving: his daughters, Cynthia Holcomb, Missy Carreon and Devin Holcomb; sons-in-law, Robert Carreon and Drew Davis; beloved friend, Adalia Kyrish; three grandchildren; and siblings, Marjorie Chadwick, Jerry Holcomb, Joe Holcomb, Mary Ann Zessin, Patricia Morris and Jack Holcomb.

Mary B. Underwood Humphrey

Mary  B. Underwood Humphrey, 80, of Oak Hill, died July 20, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Granvil Ray Kincaid

Granvil Ray Kincaid Jr. died July 13, 2010, in Panama, Central America.

Born June 19, 1934, in Dixie, he was the son of the late Granvil R. and Martha Workman Kincaid. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Kincaid Wright, on March 20, 2009.

Ray attended Gauley Bridge High School in Gauley Bridge before entering the Army.  He served 20 years in the military and retired in Panama where he made his home.

Surviving: his wife, Delores; daughters, Cindy and Milly; son, Granvil Ray Kincaid III; three grandchildren; brothers, Billy Kincaid of Hopkinsville, Ky., and Bobby Kincaid and Douglas Kincaid, both of Dixie; sisters,  Diana Sue Brown Castiglia of Las Vegas, Nev., and Sandra Bird and Libby Nichols, both of Fayetteville.

Memorial services will be held in Panama.



Sarah ‘Totsie’ Lowe

Sarah “Totsie” Lowe, 85, of Fayetteville, formerly of Logan, died July 12, 2010, following a long illness.

Funeral services were held July 15 at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan. Burial followed in Lowe Family Cemetery on Lowe Mountain.

Charles Dennis ‘Chuck’ Moses

Charles Dennis “Chuck” Moses, 53, of Fayetteville, died July 13, 2010, at his home.

Born Jan. 13,  1957, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late John Albert and Syble Charlene Sears Moses.

Chuck was a retired Deputy Sheriff for over 30 years in Fayette County and was a well-respected and loved member of the community. He was former president of the West Virginia Fraternal Order of Police and was the first Deputy to hold the position. He was also a member of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association.

Upon retiring from the police force, he drove a rock truck at the coal mines and continued to make an impact for all those he met.

Chuck loved Harley-Davidson motorcycles, his German shepherd Zeus and was an avid NASCAR fan. He enjoyed spending time, eating dinner out, going to the movies and holding court at Walmart.

Surviving: his children, Charles D. Moses II, of Fayetteville, Stacy A. Moses of Oak Hill and Chanda K. Brown of Hillsville, Va.; and his grandchild, Jason David Moses of Beckley.

A celebration of Chuck’s life was held July 16 at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.

The family asks that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association.

Douglas ‘Lamont’ Penn

Douglas “Lamont” Penn, 55, of Mount Hope, died July 14, 2010.

Josephine Thorn

Josephine Thorn, 84, of Fayetteville, died July 7, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following an extended illness.

Born July 27, 1925, in Leicester, England, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Cyril Bates and Emma Elizabeth Rixon Bates. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Thorn, on Dec. 9, 1964, and a sister, Emma Ratcliff.

Mrs. Thorn was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Fayetteville, and a member of the World War II War Bride Association.

She was a retired self-employed maid and she loved to travel and work in her flower garden.

Surviving: her daughters, Violet Chittum and husband Carl “Eddie” of Fayetteville, Carol Sue Smith and husband Chris of Manassas, Va., Sandra Mae Miller and husband Kenneth of Fayetteville, and Tina E. Dance and husband Larry of Oak Hill; brother, Joseph Samuel Bates of Leicester, England; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held July 17 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Fayetteville, with Pastor Justin Seay officiating.

In keeping with her wishes she was cremated.

Jean Wallace

Jean Wallace, 87, of Oak Hill, died July 14, 2010, at her residence with her family by her side.

Born Jan. 14, 1923, in Knoxville, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Wayne D. and Hazel L. Garrett. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John Arthur “Red” Wallace Sr.; sons, John Arthur Wallace Jr., and James Thomas Garrett; sister, Jackie Heptinstall; and by a brother, Wayne “Bud” Garrett.

Jean was a homemaker and a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill.

Surviving: her daughter, Debbie, and son-in-law, Jim DeViese, of Oak Hill; grandsons, Father James “Jamie” DeViese of Rome, Italy, Staff Sergeant John DeViese and wife Staff Sergeant Jena DeViese of Tucson, Ariz., and Justin DeViese of Baltimore, Md,; and a great-granddaughter, Julia Elizabeth DeViese of Tucson.

Mass of Christian burial was held July 17 at Sts. Peters and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill, with Father James DeViese officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Mildred Eileen Wood

Mildred Eileen Wood, 91, of Lookout, died July 15, 2010.

Services were July 19, at Chapel of Rest Mausoleum, Victor, with the Rev. Dana Stalnaker officiating.
