Thelma Baber Armstrong
Thelma Baber Armstrong, 86, of Mount Hope, died Oct. 21, 2009, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, following an extended illness.
Born Jan. 23, 1923, at Acme, she was the daughter of the late William and Pearl Griffy Baber. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Joseph Robert “Bob” Armstrong, on Sept. 14, 2002; a daughter, Glenda Sloan; and a son, Darrell Armstrong.
Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the Baptist faith and a homemaker.
Surviving: sons, Ronald Armstrong of Mount Hope, Thomas Armstrong of Mount Hope, Steven Armstrong of Glen Jean, Jesse Armstrong of Mount Hope and Lake Armstrong of Dalton, Ga.; daughters, Patricia Armstrong of Scarbro, Loretta Stover of Oak Hill and Mary Katherine Bishop of Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; a brother, Charles Baber of Oak Hill; sisters, Lucille Pannell of Gatewood and Nina Pruitt of Pennsylvania; a son-in-law, Bob Sloan of Oak Hill; and 27 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services were Oct. 24 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Rev. Carl Burrows officiating. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Edna Mae Berry
Edna Mae Berry, 65, of Backus Mountain, died Oct. 21, 2009, at her residence following a long illness.
Born Feb. 16, 1944, in Prince, she was the daughter of the late Harley and Thelma Greene. She also was preceded in death by twin girls, Lorrie Ann and Marie Annette; and sisters-in-law, Patricia Gardner and Alice Greene.
During her life in Prince, she served the public as a store owner and was known for her exceptional kindness. Edna enjoyed cooking, hunting and fishing.
She was a saint of the Danese Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a very devout Christian.
Surviving: her husband of 44 years, Earl Keaton Berry; brothers, Harley Greene and his wife, Rosa, Kermit Greene and his wife, Judy, Alvin and Calvin Greene, all of Louisa County, Va.; a sister, Martha and her husband, Cecil Badgett, of Louisa, Va.; sisters-in-law, Brenda Hunt, Pamela McCants and husband Daniel, Joyce Goins and Joann Gardner; brother-in-law, Justice Berry and his wife Martha of Backus Mountain; 10 nieces, eight nephews, 10 great-nieces and 15 great-nephews.
Services were Oct. 25 at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Rev. Lewis Cales and Rev. Patricia Cales officiating. Burial followed at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Rayola Cathryne Altice Fitzpatrick
Rayola Cathryne Altice Fitzpatrick, 66, of Whipple, died Oct. 19, 2009, at Select Specialty Hospital in Charleston.
Born Jan. 1, 1943, at Sun, she was the daughter of the late William “Bill” and Nellie Waddell Altice. Her husband, Walter D. Fitzpatrick, preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 2006.
Mrs. Fitzpatrick was a member of the Sun Community Church. She was a homemaker.
Surviving: a sister, Debbie Tascareno of Pax; brothers, William Altice of Scarbro and Jimmy Altice of Oak Hill; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services were Oct. 24 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Joan Terry officiating. Burial was at Turley Cemetery at Pea Ridge.

Lisa Michelle Hall Jones
Lisa Michelle Hall Jones, 38, of Lansing, currently residing in Bluffton, S.C., died Oct. 21, 2009, at Candler Hospital in Savannah, Ga.
Born March 11, 1971, at Beckley, she was the beloved daughter of Tekoah “Tex” and Myra Sue “Susie” Hall of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Lloyd Sampson; paternal grandparents, Willis Hall and Elma Hall Neal Syner; and father-in-law, Jerry Jones.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the First Baptist Church, Bluffton, S.C.
She was an educational deaf interpreter for Beaufort and Chatham County schools and was a member of several sign language organizations.
Lisa’s gift and passion was interpreting for the deaf. She touched many hearts through her ministry and through her educational interpreting.
Surviving, in addition to her parents: her loving husband, Jerry Bryson Jones Jr.; her precious children, Autumn Tate Jones, age 16, and Zachary Tekoah Jones, age 11, both of Bluffton; her dear sister, Kristi Hall of Bluffton; her maternal grandmother, Justine Sampson of Hilton Village; mother-in-law, Wanda Labounty of Scarbro; and an aunt, Gina Miller, and her family of Parkersburg.
Services were Oct. 25 at Cranberry Baptist Church in Beckley with Rev. Roger Pauley officiating. Private burial took place at High Lawn Memorial Park.

Esther Jane ‘Cookie’ Waugh McGuffin
Esther Jane “Cookie” Waugh McGuffin, 68, of Oak Hill, died Oct. 22, 2009, at her home.
Born Aug. 22, 1941, at Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Howard and Herma Ellen Stewart Waugh. Her husband, Glenn Franklin McGuffin, two sisters and four brothers also preceded her in death.
She was a disabled nursing assistant, having worked for Plateau Medical Center.
Mrs. McGuffin was a member of the Protestant faith.
Surviving: son, Glenn Anthony “Andy” McGuffin and wife Tammy of Shady Spring; brother, Harry Waugh of Scarbro; sisters, Grace Pittman of Oak Hill, Velma Newton of Pounding Mill, Va., and Yvonne Leffel of Oak Hill; and grandchildren, Jared Scott McGuffin and Jordan Ashleigh McGuffin, both of Shady Spring.
A committal service will be held Thursday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Oak Hill with Rev. Justin Seay and Charles “Rocky” Pittman officiating. Niche inurnment will follow. There will be no visitation.

Clarence Nicholas
Mr. Clarence Nicholas, 78, of Beckley, died Oct. 24, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital after a long illness.
Born Dec. 23, 1930, in Layland, he was the son of the late James P. Nicholas and Mary Penn Nicholas. He also was preceded in death by his brother, James R. Nicholas, and sisters, Mary Christine Nicholas, and Mabel Virginia Nicholas.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church and the American Legion.
Mr. Nicholas was retired from the Navy, Air Force, and the Veteran’s Hospital.
Surviving: his wife, Eunice Smith Nicholas of Beckley; a special niece, Edith Wright of San Antonio, Texas; a special nephew, Roland Mills of Baltimore, Md., and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at Central Baptist Church, Brooks and G Street, Beckley, with Rev. Charles Gore officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church.

Duane Daniel Painter
Duane Daniel Painter, 32, of Scarbro, died Oct. 20, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
Born Aug. 9, 1977, at Oak Hill, he was the beloved son of Tommy Wayne Painter of Scarbro and Elsie Frances Payne Painter of Oak Hill.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Quincy and Edna Painter; and an uncle, Marvin Painter.
Duane was 1995 graduate of Oak Hill High School and attended Concord University where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon.
A 10-year cancer survivor, he lived his life with a courage and grace that touched everyone around him.
He loved baseball, both as a player and fan, and was the #1 Red Sox fan. He loved and treasured his friends and family.
Surviving, in addition to his parents: a sister, Michelle Miller, her husband, Nathan, and their son, Daniel, all of Oak Hill; brother, Karl Roseblock, his wife, Tina, their sons, Christopher and Nicholas, and daughter, Natalile, all of Greenville, S.C.; his beloved aunt, Doris Collins, her husband, Tom, and their daughter, Cindy, of Parkersburg; uncle, Danny Painter, his wife, Sherry, and their children, Kevin and Jennifer, and son, Andrew, all of Oak Hill; aunt, Linda Fazio and son, Mark Painter of Ohio; as well as many friends and Chino.
Services were Oct. 23 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Ralph Shupe officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.

Joyce Uretta Perry
Ms. Joyce Uretta Perry, 66, of Beckley, formerly of Mount Hope, died Oct. 22, 2009, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown.
She has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
