Glen Calvin Buckland

Glen Calvin Buckland, 51, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 13, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital after a short illness.

He was born March 21, 1958, at Oak Hill, and was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Reaon; and an aunt and uncle, Emory and Erdine Avis, who raised him from the time he was born.

Surviving: his mother, Cleo Reaon of Charleston, and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral was Nov. 16 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Rev. Joe Cuthbertson officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Ella Sue Romm Bugin

Ella Sue Romm Bugin, 79, of Daniels, died Oct. 23, 2009, at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va.

Born July 13, 1930, at Glen Jean, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Bragg Romm. One of 13 children, she also was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Alice Sharp and Barbara Charnabay.

Mrs. Bugin was a member of the St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, Beckley.

She was a 1948 graduate of Oak Hill High School. Ella received her R.N. degree from Saint Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. Her first nursing job was at the VA Hospital in Beckley. The last 20 years of her career was spent working with geriatrics in local nursing homes.

Surviving: her husband of 56 years, Walter Frederick Bugin; sons, David Bugin of Carrollton, Va., and Mark Bugin of Springfield, Va.; grandchildren, Matthew of Richmond, Va., Kevin of Rockville, Md., and Day of Carrollton, Va.; brothers, William Romm of Wichita Falls, Texas, Nelson Romm of Bennington, Kansas, Douglas Romm of Tucson, Ariz., and Terrence Romm of Scarbro; and a sister, Anna Pinson of Carleton, Mich.

A memorial service was held Nov. 6 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Deacon Don Wise officiating.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, WV Division, 301 RHL Blvd., Station 6 & 7, Charleston WV 25311.

Virginia Williams Larese Greene

Virginia Williams Larese Greene, 87, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 13, 2009, at Plateau Medical Center.

Born April 5, 1922, at Garten, she was the daughter of the late John Williams and Mamie Jackson Williams. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Gene and Bill Williams; and sisters, Thelma Rupert, Bernice Barton, and Martha Purdy.

Virginia was of the Methodist faith and attended the Oak Hill United Methodist Church.

Surviving: her husband, Gerald Greene of Oak Hill; her son, Frank Larese and wife Kay of Belle; grandson, Mark Larese and wife Ann; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Hailey Larese, all of Lebanon, Tenn.; a sister, Shirley Sizemore and husband Bill of Parrish, Fla.; and a brother, Burley Williams and wife Annie of Fayetteville.

Funeral service was Nov. 15 at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Charles Miller officiating. Entombment followed in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Peggy Lee Grubb

Peggy Lee Grubb, 50, of Oak Hill, died Oct. 31, 2009, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following a sudden illness.

Born Nov. 24, 1958, in Middlesboro, Ky., she was the daughter of the late John Clare Dacus. She also was preceded in death by her husband, T.H. Grubb.

Peggy was a homemaker.

Surviving: her son, Tommy Bays Jr. and his wife, Rachel, of Edmond; and a sister, Anna.

Memorial services were Nov. 15 at the First Church of God, Fayetteville, with Pastor Russell Hays officiating.

John Charles Gwinn Sr.

John “J.C.” Charles Gwinn Sr., 85, of Mount Hope, died Nov. 9, 2009, in an area hospital after a short illness.

Born May 18, 1924, at Mount Hope, he was the son of the late Hazel and Emily Swift Gwinn. J.C. also was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Joan T. Graff Gwinn; two brothers and one sister. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Gwinn was retired from the postal system with 29 years in government service.

He was a World War II combat veteran, having served in the 34th Army Division. He was an avid golfer and a former member of the White Oak Country Club and Grandview Country Club.

He was a member of the Mount Hope Baptist Temple.

Surviving: children, John C. Gwinn and wife Dianna of Ghent, Jan Caye Londeree and husband Ray of Mount Hope and Tom Swift Gwinn of Mount Hope; special grandson, David Gorby and three other grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous cousins.

Private services were Nov. 12 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. David McCoy officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 3110 of Oak Hill.

Helen Hall

Helen Hall, 99, of Layland, died Nov. 13, 2009, at Salem, Va.

Born Aug. 18, 1910, in Layland, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Mary Mikulick Kosnoski. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Hall; sisters, Barbara Sheaves, Anna Fields, Mary Adkins, Melish Gilkeson, Stella Bennett, Peggy Willis, Boots Mullins; and brothers, Adam and Stonnie Kosnoski.

Mrs. Hall was a homemaker and an active member of the Chestnut Knob Baptist Church at Layland. She was a former Sunday school teacher for the teenage class for more than 50 years and also was superintendent of the church for a number of years.

She was a charter member and president of the Chestnut Knob Women’s Club and as a youth group leader, she worked with the Boy Scouts to help them earn their God & Country Award.

Surviving: daughters, Shirley Miller and husband Jim of Salem, Va., Janet Bragg of Laurel, Md., and Sandra Levitt of Lafayette, Calif.; son, Gary Hall and wife Greta of Fort Wayne, Ind.; grandchildren, Robert Bragg, Doug Miller, Maria Bragg, Barclay Hall, Anna Taylor and Jennifer Levitt; and 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services were Nov. 17 at Chestnut Knob Baptist Church, Layland, with Pastors Floyd Bolen and Jerry Tyree officiating. Burial followed in the Layland Cemetery.

Hensley E. Harrah

Hensley E. Harrah, 92, of Meadow Bridge, died Nov. 8, 2009, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea following a short illness.

Born June 13, 1917, at Elton, he was the son of the late Charles Lee and Lucy Vandall Harrah. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Evelyn Fox Harrah; his daughter, Rosa Lee Largent; brothers, Herman, Harold and Homer; and sisters, Hester, Hildred and Helena.

Hensley worked in the coal mines in numerous capacities, last being a supervisor.

He was an avid Meadow Bridge football fan who did not miss a home or away game for over 40 years. He was also known for his great memory.

Surviving: his son, Stan Harrah of Meadow Bridge; a sister, Helen Thompson of Meadow Bridge; grandsons, Alan Lee Harrah and wife Denisa of Columbus, Ohio, and Eddie Largent of Meadow Bridge; granddaughters, Darlene Killen of Rainelle and Christi Harrah of Austin, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Ryan and Katelyn Harrah of Columbus, Ohio, and Jeffrey Killen of Baltimore, Md.

Graveside services were Nov. 12 at the Patton Memorial Cemetery at Meadow Bridge with Pastor Clay O’Dell officiating.

Bernard Lee McGraw

Bernard Lee McGraw, 83, of Hilton Village, died Nov. 9, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, following a short illness.

Born Sept. 1, 1926, at Meadow Bridge, he was the son of the late Jesse C. and Laura Belle Tolliver McGraw. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilma June Vass McGraw; his second wife, Gladys Minnie Redman McGraw; and a brother, Claude McGraw.

Bernard was a member of Keeney’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Winona. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and he loved hunting with his friends.

He was an auto mechanic by trade, and also helped with the auto body work.

Surviving: a son, Billy Lee McGraw and wife Martha of Rainelle; a sister, Bonnie McGraw of Rainelle; grandchildren, Stephanie McGraw and Brad McGraw and wife Denise; and great-grandchildren, Jamie Mitchell, Braden and Caden McGraw.

Services were Nov. 12 at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted, with Pastor Ronald Sears officiating. Burial followed in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Victor.

Dorothy Mae Hart-Matthew

Dorothy Mae Hart-Matthew, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Fayetteville, died Nov. 9, 2009, in Washington.

She was born Aug. 1, 1938.

Funeral service was Nov. 14 at the Open Bible Ministries, 8203 Cryden Wa y, Forestville, Md.

Betty J. Ferrel Hudnall

Betty J. (Ferrel) Hudnall, 79, of Glasgow, died Nov. 16, 2009, at Ansted Center, Ansted, after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Chad Galen Hudnall.

Surviving: her son and wife, James “Bugs” and Delores Hudnall of Victor; aunt, Bert Moore of Glasgow; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, Cedar Grove, with Pastor Gary Tucker officiating. Burial will follow the services at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

Denzil ‘Rayda’ Penn

Denzil “Rayda Penn, 64, of New Castle, Del., formerly of Mt. Hope, died Nov. 8, 2009, at his home.

Funeral service was Nov. 13 at Newark Pentecostal Church, 73 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19713. Burial followed in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

Joseph P. Phillips Jr.

Joseph Preston “Joey” Phillips Jr., 52, of Fayetteville, died Nov. 14, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born July 13, 1957, in Huntington, he was a son of Joseph P. Sr. and Kay Dean Akers Phillips of Fayetteville.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, C. L. Phillips Sr. and Lee Akers; and grandmothers, Francis Ball Phillips and Dean Hoback Akers.

Mr. Phillips served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of United Methodist Church, Broadway, Va.

For the last 15 years he was an environmental technician (environmental testing) for TRC Environmental. He graduated from Broadway High School and Blue Ridge Community College, Va., with a two-year degree.

Surviving, in addition to his parents: his brothers, Gordon Craig Phillips and wife Martha of Fayetteville, and Thomas Phillips and fiancée Tammy Ayala of Summersville; sisters, Melissa McDaniel and husband Chuck of New Market, Va., and Jennifer Allen and husband Kenneth of Fayetteville; nieces, Stephanie Phillips, Megan McDaniel, Erin Stewart, Cara Stewart, Courtney Stewart, Brittany Phillips, Madison McDaniel, Kaileigh Alfing, Jessica Hall, Bobbi Jean McMillion, and Mary Daily; nephews, Timothy Phillips, Wesley Williams, Andrew Phillips, Jacob Hall, and Matthew Dailey; and a host of other family and friends.

Reva Dair Pruitt Smith

Reva Dair Pruitt Smith, 83, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 13, 2009.

Born Sept. 16, 1926, at Sprague, she was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus Gordan and Mary Angeline Pruitt; by her husband of 52 years, Edgar Smith; by brothers and sisters, Van Pruitt, Pete Pruitt, Georgia Pruitt, and Phyllis Pedgo; by her son, Edward Leon Smith; and by a grandson, William Inez Smith.

Reva worked as a Head Start teacher for Oak Hill Elementary and at the Dairy Dip in Fayetteville. She was a caregiver.

She attended Crossroads Apostolic Church for 18 years. She will be sadly missed by family and loved ones.

Thomas H. Stafford

Thomas H. Stafford, 64, of Fayetteville, died Nov. 16, 2009, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Jan. 14, 1945, at Beckley, he was the son of the late Harold and Juanita Marie Cantley Stafford. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Stafford.

Tom was a graduate of Mt. Hope High School Class of 1962, attended Marshall University and Beckley College. He was a member of MacDonald-Warren Lodge No. 103, A.F. & A.M., Sewell Chapter No. 24, Royal Arch Masons, and 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a former member of the Oak Hill Jaycees and Fayette County Board of Education. He attended the Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Tom was employed by People’s Life and People’s Security, LUTCF. He was a manager, regional director and trainer for Monumental Life Insurance Company for 33 years, having retired from the Stafford Agency in June 2000. He also was a real estate agent for Jim Lively’s Century 21 and served on the board of directors for Pioneer Community Bank.

Tom was one of the original guides for Wildwater Unlimited, Thurmond, and an antique car enthusiast.

Surviving: his wife, Deanna, and his son, Shane; his older brother, Ronald and wife Zona and their children, Ron, Tina and Lisa of Little Rock, Ark.; sister, Nancy Guin and her husband, Wayne, of Pittsboro, N.C., and their son, Aaron, of Nashville, Tenn.; sister, Ginny Keeney, and her husband, Jerry, and children Nancy and Fred of South Venice, Fla.; sister-in-law, Faye Stafford of Williamsburg, Ky., and nephew, Larry Stafford of Atlanta, Ga.; and several other nieces and nephews and friends too numerous to count.

In respect of Tom’s wishes, his body was cremated. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, Nov. 20, beginning at 4 p.m. at the restaurant at the old River’s property on Fayette Station Road in Fayetteville.

Arley L. Tincher Sr., 75, of Oak Hill, died Nov. 15, 2009.

Lois Raye Banks Warren

Mrs. Lois Raye Banks Warren, 82, of 206 Tennessee Street, Mt. Hope, died Nov. 8, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, after a long illness.

Born July 15, 1927, in Sugar Creek, Mt. Hope, she was the daughter of the late Charles Lawrence Banks and Maggie Louise Price Banks. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Wilbur (Billy) Banks, James (Jimmy) Banks, and Lawrence (Lonnie) Banks.

Mrs. Warren was a member of the United Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Hope, and was a beautician and homemaker.

Surviving: her husband of 58 years, James R. Warren Jr. of Mt. Hope; sons, Richard (Monica) Warren of Union City, Calif., and Kenneth D. (Alicia) Warren of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Vickie L. Warren of Beckley; brothers, Leon (Maxine) Trigg of Beckley, Dennis W. Banks of Columbus, Ohio, and Edward A. (Faye) Banks of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Gloria J. Banks of Mt. Hope, Carolyn A. Smith of Mt. Hope, Emily A. Rickman of Xenia, Ohio, and Sarah E. (James) Lang of Columbus, Ga.; three grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Nov. 15 at United Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Hope , with Rev. Phillip Copney and Pastor Sandra Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

James “Eddie” Williams of Manassas, Va., formerly of Oak Hill, died Oct. 12, 2009.

He was born on July 14, 1948.
